blue mountains poem

Contributed by Millie Salatenna & Anna Blasius from Western Australia
The Leura Leech 2006
Let's climb the Blue Mountains my friend Anna said
We'll go with Auswalk, they'll give us a bed
And food, good hosts and a book full of notes
We've been on their walks before
From Perth to Sydney we flew and caught the train to the Mountains Blue
The Manor House stood at the start of the trail
Down to Mt Piddington, Cox's Cave, Fairy Bower and the Pass
Porter's Pass we quite enjoyed, the Canyon was so cool
The feathery ferns we loved to see beside each rock and pool
The Leura Leech was far away
And so ended our first day of mountain walking bliss
Our second day of walking was just as good again
The third was also pleasant especially as we beat the rain
The Ruined Castle was our lunch spot
(the Leura Leech would have been too hot) Katoomba was more dry
At Ballykissangel we enjoyed our stay
We breakfasted well and went on our way
We saw Echo Point and the Forest Hut and followed Prince Henry's Track
We climbed on ropes and steps and stairs galore
But at the Pool of Siloam we found a beach
And also the dreaded Leura Leech
A tiger to us unknown
While Anna took photos, I looked at my leg
A pin prick had made me look down
There on my sock was a bladder of blood
"I donated already" I said to the bug but he just continued to suck
His friend then found Anna's neck
So all you walkers I beseech, always beware of the Leura Leech
They leap and suck and drain your blood without a please or thank you
They need not rain or even flood they just crave your lovely blood and leave a nasty itch
