What Our Travellers Say About Their Camino Pilgrimage
The whole walk was the best part! And the team at Auswalk were fabulous. Always available and really helpful when we needed them.
Lily S
The walk was by far the highlight of my autumn trip to Japan. The trail itself is absolutely gorgeous in late autumn with the maple leaves turning red and behind the scenes, Auswalk provided everything I needed, including some lovely choices of accommodation, to enjoy this amazing experience.
Cody R
This trek was amazing, and accommodation provided an opportunity to have a genuine traditional Japanese experience away from the busyness of a modern city.
Michael B
Auswalk took all the uncertainty and stress out of planning our walk. We have just completed the 14-day, 240 km Portuguese Camino. Auswalk went out of their way to provide the itinerary we wanted for our self-guided walk. The accommodations were exceptional and provided the rest and rejuvenation required each night to complete each stage of the walk. The personalised walking notes were invaluable and certainly ensured the best experiences and hassle-free days, as did the daily luggage relocation from one hotel to the next.
Peter S, Camino Portuguese.
My entire experience with Auswalk was truly wonderful. From the moment I booked the Camino walk to the final day of the journey, everything was seamless and enjoyable. Really appreciated the detailed notes provided in the guidebook. The accommodation was comfortable, and the luggage transfer was fantastic. Even though it was a self-guided tour, I never felt alone. I highly recommend Auswalk!

The Camino de Santiago, or the Way of St. James, has a long and significant history spanning over a millennium. It's the longest pilgrimage route in Europe and is one of two UNESCO World Heritage trails, alongside the Kumano Kodo in Japan.
A UNESCO World Heritage Trail
A brief history of Camino de Santiago
The pilgrimage dates back to the discovery of Saint James' tomb in the 9th century. The Camino Primitivo, also known as the 'Original Way,' is said to be the first route walked, with origins in 9th-century Asturias. The Asturian King Alfonso II first recognised the tomb of Santiago and travelled to the site.
9th Century Europe
Camino Primitivo — The Original Way
8-11 days from $1,415. Self Guided.
The Camino del Norte, or Northern Way, is one of the oldest pilgrimage routes to Santiago de Compostela, developed alongside the Camino Primitivo in 9th-century Asturias. Between the 8th and 10th centuries, when much of central Spain was under Moorish control, the northern regions offered a safer alternative for Christian pilgrims, leading to the route's prominence, particularly among Northern European pilgrims.
Early Medieval Period
Camino del Norte — The Northern Way
8-39 days from $1,650. Self Guided.
The Camino Finisterre, also known as Camino de Fisterra, predates Christianity. It was once a pagan pilgrimage to the mythical Cape Fisterra, or 'The Coast of Death,' where pagans believed the sun died and the worlds of the dead and living met. Today, Camino Finisterre is the only route to start in Santiago and is often added to other Camino itineraries.
Pagan Roots
Camino Finisterre — The End of the Earth
6-9 days from $1,245. Self Guided.
In the 10th century AD, Bishop Godescalc made a pilgrimage from his village of Le Puy-en-Velay to the city of Santiago, and thus, the French Way was born. By the 11th and 12th centuries, Camino Frances emerged as the most popular and best-developed route.
In 1139 AD, The Codex Calixtinus was compiled. This medieval guidebook described routes, customs, and sights, even offering practical advice and warnings for pilgrims. The Codex Calixtinus was like a medieval version of Auswalk walking notes!
The Golden Age of Pilgrims
Camino Frances — The French Way
8-38 days from $1,595. Self Guided & Group Guided.
The golden age of pilgrimage also saw the rise of the Camino Portuguese. Portuguese devotees wanted their own direct route to Santiago and used ancient Roman roads and trade routes to forge a path to the sacred city. Camino Portuguese also became a popular route for those arriving by boat in Portugal's many ports. Today, it's one of the most popular Camino routes.
