What to Expect on
Japan's Trails
The Walk
Discover the Trail
Japan’s ancient trails have guided pilgrims and poets for centuries. Walk the cedar-lined Kumano Kodo, the misty temples of Koyasan, or the stone-paved Nakasendo Way linking Kyoto and Edo-era villages. Pass moss-covered shrines, sleep in centuries-old inns, or witness a monk’s dawn ritual on Mount Koya. These paths wind through forests, valleys, bamboo groves, and tea fields — with onsens and handmade meals along the way. Each trail offers a deep connection to Japan’s soul — whether you're chasing views, tradition, or stillness.
Trail Details
The walks are graded moderate to challenging, requiring a good level of fitness but accessible to keen walkers. Daily distances range from 10 to 15 kilometres, with elevation gains of 500 to 800 metres, taking 5 to 8 hours to complete. Each day offers both easier and more challenging route options, allowing you to tailor your experience to your preferences and energy levels.
Accommodation (Traditional Japanese Lodgings)
All trails offer unique accommodations that immerse travellers in Japanese culture and tradition. Ryokans provide elegant, serene settings with tatami mat floors and futon bedding, while minshukus are cosier, family-run lodgings with a homely atmosphere.
Both options offer authentic hospitality—ryokans emphasise attentive service (omotenashi), and minshukus provide personal interactions with hosts who share local culture and traditions. Together, they create a warm and memorable Japanese experience.
Stay In Traditional Japanese Comfort
Food (Dining Highlights)
Savour Local Flavours
Dining along the trails is an essential part of the experience. Meals highlight fresh, regional ingredients like fish, mountain vegetables, and locally grown rice. Expect beautifully presented dishes that showcase Japanese attention to detail and aesthetics.
Guests enjoy home-cooked meals featuring staples such as miso soup, grilled fish, and pickled vegetables. For a more elaborate experience, savour multi-course feasts (kaiseki) meticulously prepared with seasonal ingredients like sashimi, tempura, and beautifully presented rice and vegetable dishes. Dining often takes place in traditional settings, sitting on tatami mats at low tables, adding to the authentic experience.
Onsens (Hot Springs)

Our Japan walks vary in terrain, scenery, and challenge — from the forested mountains of the Kumano Kodo, to the peaceful temple paths of Koyasan, to the rolling post towns of the Nakasendo Way. Trails are well-maintained but can be physically demanding. Expect ancient stone steps, forested climbs, and uneven paths — with some days reaching elevations up to 1,200m. Walks average 14–18km per day (some up to 24km), taking 5–9 hours, often with morning climbs and gentler afternoons. Some itineraries include optional rest days or shorter walking options. Most walks suit reasonably fit travellers, but the more mountainous routes require specific preparation. If you're comfortable with hill walks, stairs, and carrying a daypack over varied terrain, you'll do well. Good balance and strong legs help — and we recommend training with stair climbs and trail walks before you go. Each itinerary is graded from Easy to Strenuous on our website, so you can choose a walk that fits your pace and confidence.
Each night you will be staying in a lovely Ryokan, Minshuku, or Japanese Lodge or Hotel. The rooms are always very comfortable and clean and almost always include ensuites (you will be advised if this isn’t the case). Meals are elaborate, especially dinner and breakfast, which often come in the format of either a multi-course extravaganza or a buffet where you can eat as much as you want. A yukata, a kind of jacket-type dressing gown, will almost always be supplied, so you can be dressed as you will find all the locals. Your accommodation is often a highlight of the day as you soak in an onsen, peering over the ocean in some cases.
The food along the Japan Walks offer a remarkable culinary journey through traditional Japanese cuisine, particularly in the ryokans (traditional inns) where you'll stay. Meals are typically served kaiseki-style – a sophisticated multi-course dining experience that showcases local specialties. Along the coast in Tanabe, you'll enjoy fresh seafood like scabbardfish sashimi, grilled squid, and various sushi, thanks to the nutrient-rich Kuroshio current. As you move into the mountains, the menu shifts to feature local ingredients like various mushrooms (shiitake, eryngii, enoki), seasonal vegetables, and regional specialties served in dishes like clear soups, grilled meats, and tempura. Each meal is thoughtfully presented with multiple small dishes, combining both familiar Japanese staples like miso soup and rice with unique local delicacies.
Spring (March to May) and autumn (October to November) are the ideal seasons to walk, offering comfortable hiking temperatures and spectacular natural displays. In spring, you might catch the famous cherry blossoms in late March and early April, while autumn rewards walkers with stunning fall colours. Summer months are warmer and more humid, but still walkable, especially if you enjoy swimming in mountain streams to cool off. Winter walks are possible and notably quieter, though you'll need warm clothes and good rain gear. The cooler temperatures make winter a particularly magical time to experience the outdoor onsens (hot springs) after a day's hiking. Each season offers its own unique charm, so your choice might depend on whether you prioritise ideal walking conditions, seasonal highlights, or fewer crowds.
Our Kumano Kodo walks offer both self-guided and group-guided options, allowing you to tailor your experience to your preferences. Self-Guided: With a self-guided walk, you have the freedom to set your own pace and explore independently. We provide you with all the tools and resources you’ll need, including detailed maps, trail notes, and 24/7 support if needed. It's ideal for those who prefer flexibility and enjoy discovering on their own while still having the support of our experience. Group-Guided: In a group-guided option, you’ll join a small group of like-minded walkers, led by a knowledgeable guide who will share insights about the history, culture, and natural beauty of the Kumano Kodo. This option is perfect for those who prefer a more social experience and appreciate the expertise and camaraderie that comes with travelling as part of a group. Both options offer an enriching way to experience the ancient pilgrimage trails of Kumano Kodo, with the choice coming down to whether you value independence or the company and expertise of a guide and group.
We offer several remarkable walking experiences in Japan, including the Kumano Kodo, the Nakasendo Trail, the Michinoku Coastal Trail, and the Shikoku Pilgrimage. Kumano Kodo trail: The Kumano Kodo is a sacred pilgrimage route weaving through Japan’s misty Kii Peninsula. Lined with towering cedar forests, ancient shrines, and quiet mountain villages, it offers a deeply spiritual and scenic journey. Walkers follow in the footsteps of emperors and monks, climbing time-worn stone paths that connect UNESCO World Heritage sites like Hongu Taisha and Nachi Falls. It’s not just a hike — it’s a powerful immersion into Japan’s spiritual heart. Nakasendo Trail: This journey follows an ancient route between Kyoto and Tokyo, taking you through well-preserved Edo-period villages, scenic forests, and mountainous landscapes. Michinoku Coastal Trail: A stunning trail along Japan’s northeastern coast, the Michinoku Coastal Trail offers incredible ocean views, rugged cliffs, and opportunities to experience the unique culture of Japan’s Tohoku region. Shikoku Pilgrimage: Known for its 88-temple circuit around Shikoku Island, this pilgrimage combines cultural immersion with serene natural landscapes, providing a deeply meaningful experience. Each of these trails offers a distinct perspective on Japan’s history, culture, and natural beauty, allowing you to experience the country in a way that goes beyond traditional sightseeing. Whether you're interested in historical routes, coastal walks, or spiritual journeys, we have options to suit your interests.
A Dual Pilgrim is someone who has completed both the Kumano Kodo pilgrimage in Japan and the Camino de Santiago in Spain, two of the world's most revered pilgrimage routes. Recognised by the Kumano Tourism Bureau, the Dual Pilgrim designation celebrates this unique achievement, symbolising a connection between Eastern and Western spiritual journeys. To become a Dual Pilgrim, you’ll need to complete one of the designated routes on the Kumano Kodo and a certified Camino de Santiago route. Upon finishing both, you can apply for a Dual Pilgrim certificate, which is a meaningful way to commemorate your accomplishment. Our Kumano Kodo itineraries fulfil the requirements needed to be recognised, so completing one of our tours can help you achieve Dual Pilgrim status!
