There is the option to halve this 6.5km ascent with a bus, at own cost, to Aminona. As you break through the tree line you are confronted by the Valais Alps’ iconic four-thousand-meter giants including the Matterhorn and Weisshorn looming large across the valley behind you. Continue via the Cave du Sex cliff for refreshments at the mountain hut, then onto vast, windswept Varneralp Plateau. Descend to the charming village of Leukerbad, where the peaks of Valais surround you. End the day with a well-deserved soak in the Leukerbad thermal baths.

Once at the summit, be treated to unforgettable panoramic views before making your descent into the picturesque and green Bernese Oberland. There is the option to shorten the descent by 4km with the Sunnbüel cable car. Your accommodation tonight is in Kandersteg. Once refreshed perhaps find a meal in a cozy, timber-framed stübli, drinking a local Swiss beer, eating a hearty plate of Rösti (Swiss hashbrowns).

DAY 4
Kandersteg to Adelboden

The challenge of the day lies in the ascent to Bunderspitz, where the rewarding views provide ample motivation. The shorter route option utilises the Allmenalp cable car from Kandersteg, at own cost. The trail dives straight into a dense canopy, tackling a punishingly steep, canyon-like ravine right alongside the thundering Alpbach waterfall. As elevation increases, the rear-facing views become spectacular. The trail offers an excellent vantage point overlooking the valley, showcasing Lake Oeschinen, the Blümlisalp glacier massif, and the sharp peak of the Altels. Descend into Adelboden. Post check-in head straight to the Schmid Tea Room and  order a Cremeschnitte, a rich, indulgent Swiss custard and puff-pastry slice.

To the south, enjoy panoramic views of the icy Wildstrubel massif and the Plaine Morte Glacier. To the west, the trail overlooks the sprawling, scenic Simmental valley. A gentle stroll down smooth gravel paths leads you into the Simmental valley. The trail winds past historic wooden barns and green pastures filled with the iconic sound of ringing cowbells.

Elevation: + 650 m / – 930 m or + 910 m / – 1190 m

DAY 6
Lenk to Crans-Montana

Begin the day with a scenic bus ride to Iffigenalp, at own cost, followed by a challenging ascent to Rawilpass. The views are nothing short of spectacular as you cross back into Valais. The green meadows of the Bernese Oberland fade as you climb right back into the stark, high-altitude moonscape of the Valais Alps. After crossing the rocky Plan des Roses plateau, a steep descent brings you to the turquoise waters of Lac de Tseuzier, a dramatic alpine reservoir hemmed in by sheer cliffs and waterfalls. Saving the best for last, the route follows the historic Bisse du Ro right into Crans-Montana. Chiseled into vertical rock faces, this ancient waterway trail features secure modern boardwalks and a dramatic, 120-meter pedestrian bridge spanning a deep chasm for an unforgettable finish.

FITNESS GUIDE

It’s well worth investing some time and effort preparing for your walking holiday. The graph shows the average daily distance, elevation, and terrain difficulty for your hike. The dotted line indicates the average across all our walks, which will give you a feel for how challenging your walk is compared to all – and the recommended type, and amount, of preparation needed. Of course, you can adapt this according to your existing fitness levels and lifestyle.

The graph and the information below can be used in conjunction with the fitness guide to help you prepare for your walking adventure. Across all walks, average daily distance is 16.8km, average daily elevation is 448m, average terrain difficulty is 5/10.

ngraph

DISTANCE - ABOVE AVERAGE

Distance training is a major consideration in your overall training program. As you progress, incorporate longer walks into your training plan.

Schedule one or two long walks each week, gradually increasing the distance until you can comfortably cover 17-25 km in a single day. Also include walks on consecutive days to help your body adapt to the demands of walking for multiple days in a row. Take every opportunity you can to walk. If you have a fitness watch or phone, you should try to reach >15,000 steps every day.

Ensure you can comfortably walk the average distance per day displayed in the graph, at least one month before you undertake your hike.

TERRAIN - MOUNTAINOUS / UNDULATING TERRAIN

As terrain associated with mountain climbs is often somewhat uneven and rocky, balancing and core exercises are vital. Try to also include some form of elevation in more than 50% of your walking and prioritise resistance training, whilst incorporating stairs anytime you can. Walking up mountains or hills, up and down stairs at work, or up and down at a local oval with a grandstand is incredibly useful. Elevation is often where walkers encounter problems not distance, as it uses an entirely different set of muscles to everyday flat walking. Concentrate on doing lots of squats and lunges to build your glute muscles.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask one of our destination consultants, or if you have specific track-related questions if we can’t answer them, we can also ask our staff who have walked the track. You can contact us via our contact form, email us at info@auswalk.com.au, or call us on +61 3 9597 9767.

IMPORTANT - SOLO WALKERS

For your safety and well-being, we are unable to accept bookings for solo walkers on this self-guided trip. The remote nature of some tracks and limited mobile reception mean that walking alone presents a higher risk in case of emergencies.
