Exploring the Camino Finisterre: Self-Guided Trips to Suit Every Pilgrim

The 90 km Camino Finisterre offers a one-off walk or unique extension to your pilgrimage experience if you have walked into Santiago. This walk on the Camino takes you beyond Santiago de Compostela to the rugged coast of Galicia, once believed to be the world’s end. This Camino leads you to the historic town of Fisterra and, ultimately, the lighthouse at Cape Finisterre (Faro de Fisterra).

OVERVIEW

Walking on the Camino Finisterre

The Camino Finisterre offers stunning coastal views, remote forests, and charming fishing villages along the way. The track has a rich history and provides a deeply spiritual and serene experience. It is perfect for those seeking a quieter, reflective journey. Interestingly, you might want to burn their clothes or boots as a symbolic act of closure. That’s the tradition! Also, you can walk back to whence you came, which was once always the way.

There is also the option to walk to Muxia after Cape Finistere, a delightful walk along the coast, which effectively adds two more days of walking. Muxía is known for its dramatic coastline and ancient legends. Muxia is home to the Sanctuary of Our Lady of the Boat (Nosa Señora da Barca), a site linked to the Virgin Mary, adding a mystical element to the journey.

For those who prefer flexibility or have a shorter time period to work with, customising the Camino Finisterre allows you to have your own bespoke itinerary. This way, you can stay longer in towns and walk at your own pace.  By the way, we offer a discount if you pair two of the Camino walks together.

Climate/Weather and best time to go

There are better times than others to walk the Camino. On almost all of the Caminos spring and autumn is the best time. Mid-summer can be a little warmer. Early winter is possible but the accommodations along the route are less likely to be open.

You will have to check the weather for each destination, especially through the Pyranees. We have provided more detailed information on the specific walk’s website page for each destination.
