Overview

Hadrian's Wall is one of the ancient world's most remarkable structures, a UNESCO World Heritage Site stretching 135 kilometres from coast to coast across northern England. Built on the orders of Emperor Hadrian to mark the boundary between Roman Britannia and the unconquered north, the wall remains substantially intact, a testament to the ambition and reach of the Roman Empire.

The walk traces the remnants of forts, towers, turrets, and towns that once stood as sentinels along the frontier, bringing the world of ancient Rome to life through rare artefacts, hands-on museum exhibits, and the stories of those who lived on the edge of the empire.

Where You'll Stay

During this walk, seven nights are spent in quaint English B&Bs and guesthouses, each property selected for its position along the Hadrian's Wall route. Securing accommodation directly on the track is notoriously difficult and on two nights the walk stays in properties just off the track. Having personally walked the route and assessed all the available options, we found these properties to offer a more interesting and enjoyable experience than what is available on the track itself.

On those two nights, a short taxi ride of three to five kilometres will be required and this cost is at your own expense. Where any listed property is unavailable, a similar alternative of equivalent standard will be arranged and discussed with you during the booking process.

Hosts throughout are knowledgeable about the region and ready to help with any questions that come up along the way. The team is also reachable throughout the walk should you need anything at all. Hadrian's Wall accommodation fills up quickly so booking as early as possible once your dates are set is strongly recommended.

Single Rooms

If you are travelling with friends or family but would prefer your own room, please let us know at the time of booking. Single rooms can be arranged for an additional payment.

What You'll Eat

Seven home-cooked breakfasts are included throughout this walk, one each morning to set you up before stepping out onto Hadrian's Wall. Lunch and dinner are yours to find each day, and the villages and pubs along the route offer good eating at most stops.

Note: Please advise us of any food allergies or intolerances at the time of booking. If you have severe allergies, bringing some of your own snacks is recommended, as specialist ingredients can be harder to source in more remote parts of this walk.

More About This Trip

The walk starts in Bowness-on-Solway and finishes in Newcastle, crossing the north of England from west to east.

The most practical way to reach Bowness-on-Solway is by train to Carlisle, from where a taxi takes around 20 minutes. A local bus service from Carlisle Bus Station also runs four times daily, though it does not operate on Sundays. Newcastle and Carlisle are both well connected by rail to London and other major UK cities. Always purchase your train ticket before boarding in the UK.

The walk ends in Newcastle, which has excellent onward rail connections to London and other major cities, as well as Newcastle Airport (NCL) for onward flights.

This walk is available from 1 April to 31 October, with no fixed start days. Spring brings wildflowers and the lambing season to the Northumberland countryside; waterproofs are essential as rainfall can be heavy. Summer offers the most reliable conditions, with temperatures around 18°C and long daylight hours, though July and August are the busiest months. Autumn is many walkers' favourite season, with golden foliage and quieter trails; note that some accommodation providers begin closing in late October. Pack waterproofs and layers whatever the month. The weather along Hadrian's Wall can change several times in a single day.

This walk is graded moderate, with several days stepping up to moderate to challenging. Daily walks reach up to 24 kilometres, with generally easy-going terrain underfoot. Some sections include ascents, rocky trails, and loose surfaces, so sturdy walking boots with reliable grip are essential. Trails are well-defined and well-waymarked throughout.

An exercise regime of two to three times per week, in addition to your usual walks, is recommended in preparation.

Daily walk notes, maps, and GPX tracks are provided.

You must hold adequate travel insurance for your trip, including cover for personal liability and accidental injury and illness. For all trips involving international travel, your policy must also include emergency medical treatment, evacuation and repatriation cover. We strongly recommend your policy also covers trip cancellation and curtailment, and loss of or damage to luggage.

A cancellation fee usually applies if you cancel after your booking is confirmed. Travel insurance with cancellation cover will generally cover this fee, so it's worth arranging your policy at the time of booking.

Full insurance requirements are set out in our booking terms and conditions.

Frequently Asked Questions

The walk runs from March through November. Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) are the sweet spots — quieter trails, beautiful scenery and mild temperatures. Summer (June to August) offers the best weather but brings crowds, particularly in July and August. Come prepared for rain whenever you travel — this is England.

The walk starts in Bowness-on-Solway. The easiest way is to take a train to Carlisle and then a taxi out to Bowness-on-Solway. There is also a bus service from Carlisle Bus Station running four times daily, though not on Sundays. The walk finishes in Wallsend, Newcastle, which has excellent train connections to London and the rest of the UK.

Your main luggage is transferred between accommodations each day, so you walk with just a daypack. On four days of the walk, the best available accommodation sits just off the trail — on those days a short taxi of 3 to 5km gets you between the trail and your lodgings. These taxi costs are not included and are at your own expense.

Seven nights in a handpicked mix of B&Bs, guesthouses and country hotels, all with ensuite rooms. The character varies nicely — a family-run pub in the market town of Brampton, a hotel overlooking the North Tyne River with views of a Roman bridge, and the Crowne Plaza in Newcastle to finish. Breakfast is included every morning. Accommodation on the Hadrian's Wall trail books out fast, so locking in your dates early is strongly recommended.

A comfortable daypack with your walk notes, a map, a waterproof jacket, warm layers, sun protection and two to three litres of water. The British weather is famously unpredictable — waterproof boots and a reliable rain jacket are non-negotiable regardless of the season.

The walk is graded moderate, with some days pushing into moderate-to-challenging. Most days cover 20 to 26km, so a solid base of regular walking is important. Two to three sessions a week in the lead-up will make a real difference — the goal is to make covering 24km on consecutive days feel comfortable.

Breakfast is included every morning. Lunch and dinner are not included and are at your own expense. The villages and towns along the route have pubs and cafes, and your hosts are well-placed to point you in the right direction. Let the team know about any allergies or intolerances at booking so hosts can be briefed ahead of your arrival.

Yes, and it's a condition of booking. Your policy must cover injury, trip cancellation, luggage loss and medical evacuation. Never pack your passport in your main luggage.
