Overview

The Sapa region of northern Vietnam is one of Asia's great walking destinations, and the landscape here is unlike anything else on the continent. Terraced rice fields cascade down the slopes of the Hoang Lien Son mountains in layers that shift colour with the seasons.

Trekking through the Muong Hoa Valley takes you through the heart of this landscape, along narrow paths above the valley floor, across suspension bridges over the Muong Hoa River and into the villages of the H'mong, Giay and Red Dao peoples. Daily life here continues largely as it has for generations, and walking is the only way to reach many of these communities properly.

The trails wind through bamboo forests, past ancient rock carvings and along ridgelines with views that stretch across the valley to the mountains beyond. Away from the tourist trail, this is a tranquil and deeply rewarding corner of Vietnam that leaves most walkers wanting to stay far longer than planned.
