Bay of Islands
Explore one of New Zealand's most historically significant and naturally beautiful regions on foot, island hopping by water taxi through the subtropical Bay of Islands and walking the dramatic Cape Brett Peninsula.
Tips, tricks, and trail insights - everything you need to know about multi-day walks in Bay of Islands.
Overview
The Bay of Islands sits at the top of New Zealand's North Island and carries the kind of history that stops you in your tracks. This is where the Treaty of Waitangi was signed in 1840 and where the first permanent European settlement in New Zealand took root. Today its 144 islands, secluded coves and pristine waters make it one of the country's most beloved destinations.
The walking here is genuinely varied. A loop walk explores the inner bay and the charming historic town of Russell, while water taxis ferry walkers between the islands of Motuarohia, Moturua and Urupukapuka, each with their own trails through native bush, past ancient Maori archaeological sites and along coastlines alive with birdlife. The highlight is the Cape Brett Peninsula, where a challenging ridgeline track through native forest delivers sweeping views across the bay, out to the Cavalli Islands and down to the famous Hole in the Rock, with dolphins and whales often visible in the water below.
