Overview

Bruny Island sits off the southern coast of Tasmania, a short ferry crossing from the mainland but a world away from everyday life. Known as Lunawanna-alonnah to its Traditional Custodians, the Nuenonne people, the island offers a remarkable range of walking through some of Tasmania's most varied and beautiful landscapes.

The Fluted Cape circuit is the standout walk, climbing to dramatic clifftop views above Storm Bay and out across the Southern Ocean, with white-bellied sea eagles riding the thermals and the ruins of an old whaling station at Grass Point below. The Labillardiere Peninsula circuit explores coastal heath, eucalypt forest and secluded beaches, while the climb to Mount Mangana, the island's highest point, rewards with panoramic views across the island. For those with more time, the East Cloudy Head track leads to the wild surf beaches of Cloudy Bay.

Throughout, the wildlife is exceptional. Bruny is home to all twelve of Tasmania's endemic bird species, rare white Bennett's wallabies, echidnas and a coastline alive with seabirds, seals and migrating whales.
