Overview

K'gari, whose name means paradise in the language of its Traditional Owners, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site unlike anything else in Australia. The largest sand island in the world, it supports ancient rainforests growing improbably from sand, over forty crystal-clear freshwater lakes and a coastline of pristine beaches that stretches for kilometres in every direction.

Based at Kingfisher Bay on the island's western shore, the walking here reveals a landscape of remarkable diversity. Trails lead through towering rainforest to the jewel-like Lake McKenzie, where white silica sand meets water of extraordinary clarity. Rare king ferns with fronds reaching five metres give the forest a genuinely prehistoric quality, while the crystal-clear waters of Wanggoolba Creek flow through Pile Valley beneath a canopy of ancient trees.

Frequently Asked Questions

The walk is available from April to mid-October. May through August offer the best conditions — cooler temperatures and low humidity. The walk is not available over the summer months.

Broken-in trail runners or walking shoes with good grip are ideal for sandy terrain. Pack sun protection, insect repellent, and light, breathable clothing. A full gear list will be provided before departure.

Yes, and it's a condition of booking. Your policy must include medical evacuation coverage, as well as cover for injury, cancellation, and loss of luggage.

A moderate level of fitness is recommended. The terrain is mostly flat, but walking on sand is more demanding than it looks — particularly on the legs over longer distances. Building lower body strength before departure is advised.

K'gari's dingoes are among the most genetically pure in eastern Australia and are protected wild animals. Do not approach, feed, or interact with them, and always supervise children closely. Detailed dingo safety information is included in your walk notes.
