OverviewOverview
The Kunisaki Peninsula on Japan's Kyushu island is one of the country's most spiritually significant and least-visited walking destinations. This 7-day guided walk traces the ancient trails of the Rokugo Manzan tradition, a unique fusion of Buddhism and Shinto that has shaped this volcanic landscape for over a thousand years.
The route passes through forested mountains, past stone Buddhas carved into sheer rock faces and through temple complexes that have drawn devoted visitors from across Japan for centuries. Usa Jingu Shrine, the head shrine of over 40,000 Hachiman shrines across Japan, is an early highlight, as is Fuki-ji Temple, home to a National Treasure Hall. At Monjusen-ji Temple, walkers participate in the Goma fire ritual, an ancient Buddhist ceremony of flames and chanting that offers an insight into Japan's esoteric traditions rarely available to visitors. A Zen meditation session led by a resident monk provides a quieter moment of reflection along the way.
The journey concludes in Beppu, renowned for its extraordinary hot spring landscape. Evenings throughout are spent in traditional ryokan accommodation, where kaiseki dinners and onsen bathing are as much a part of the experience as the walking itself.
