Flinders Island
Explore Flinders Island's forests, mountain ranges, and coastal trails, a hidden gem just a short flight from Melbourne or Launceston.
Plan your Flinders Island trip with an expert in a free 1:1 consultation.
Overview
Flinders Island sits just off the coast of Tasmania, a 30-minute flight from Launceston or 45 minutes from Melbourne, yet it remains one of the least explored corners of Australia. Walkers who make the trip are rewarded with a landscape that shifts from dense forest to granite mountain ranges to coastline within a single day's trek. Locals and seasoned travellers alike consider it among Tasmania's, and arguably Australia's, most underrated walking destinations.
Every walking holiday on Flinders Island begins right at the island's airport, so the journey from arrival to first step on the trail is refreshingly simple. From there, walkers move through a mix of terrain rarely found in such close proximity: ancient eucalypt forest, granite peaks that catch the afternoon light, and beaches that stay empty even in peak season.
These holidays are built on more than 30 years of walking holiday experience, over 30,000 guests walked, and 3 million kilometres covered. The routes and logistics have been refined over decades, so walkers can focus on the island in front of them, confident the details have already been worked out.

More About This Destination
Transport from Melbourne and on the track:
The climate on Flinders Island is temperate.
The Flinders Island guided and self-guided walking holidays are available year-round. However, October through May is a more popular time to walk; this is when guided trips depart. Our local guides who live on the Island swear that June and July are also good times to walk. The weather is often clean and crisp at this time. There no one around almost all of the year as the island is still off the radar. Please see our What To Bring section in FAQ’s for more information.
For more information please see the Bureau of Meteorology’s information concerning average temperatures and rainfall levels throughout the year.
As with any journey, it is essential to be prepared for your walking holiday. While we will be transporting your luggage from accommodation to accommodation, you will still be carrying a lightweight day pack with you. Here is what we suggest that you carry with you each day:

- Mobile phone (please note that reception is not available in all walk areas)
- Personal insect repellent, band-aids, and a small container of salt mixed with rice grains

Now that we have the essentials packed, it is time to think of those additional items that may be worth packing along with you. These may include and are not limited to:

- Sunglasses
- Camera (with an extra battery or sim cards)
