Overview

Remote and mostly uninhabited, Flinders Island is one of those rare places that feels genuinely apart from the world. The air here is among the cleanest on earth, and the walking is breathtakingly beautiful for a destination that remains largely unknown.

The island offers serene river estuaries, picturesque inlets, and the opportunity to climb Mount Strzelecki, the island's highest peak, along with several smaller summits. Wildlife is abundant throughout, with wallabies, Cape Barren geese, wild peacocks, pheasants, birds of prey, and large numbers of seabirds roaming freely across the landscape.

Two outstanding local guides look after every detail, with easier and harder walking options available each day. At night, comfortable accommodation and chef-prepared breakfasts and dinners make for a fitting end to each day on the trail.

Highlights

  • Explore rocky coastlines interspersed with beautiful sandy beaches
  • The picturesque Sawyers Bay and magnificent Strzelecki Ranges
  • Learn about Wybalenna at the Furneaux Historical Museum
  • Unique rock formations, idyllic beach and azure blue water
  • Opportunity to climb Mt Strzelecki if you fancy the challenge!
  • Stunning views through the Darling Range

Itinerary

Day 1

Arrival: Flinders Island
3 km1h

This Flinders Island tour commences on Flinders Island and we'll meet you at the airport. Flights to the island leave from Essendon (near Melbourne airport) or Launceston (in Tasmania) via Sharp Airlines. As you approach the rugged Furneaux Group of islands, Flinders Island looks like a motley collection of jumbled mountains jutting out of the sea. It’s 75 km long and 40 km wide with a population of only 850 people. As well as tall peaks, sea cliffs and idyllic coves, much of the central part of the island is covered in lush green farmland and glorious national parks. This afternoon, we will endeavour to do a short walk - the Trousers Point Circuit (subject to flight arrival times).

Where You'll Stay

A lodge near Trousers Point provides the base for all six nights on this walk, with individually themed en-suite rooms, a licensed restaurant, lounge, bar and decks with wonderful views. After a day on the island, returning to somewhere this well equipped and well located makes a genuine difference.

What You'll Eat

Fresh, local and certified organic, the food on this walk reflects the island it comes from. Six extensive breakfasts are included throughout this walk, and five walker's lunches are provided daily at some of the most incredible locations Flinders Island has to offer, always augmented by Auswalk's own trail mix. Each walker is given their own insulated lunch bag and silicone collapsible tub. Six two-course dinners are prepared each evening at the lodge restaurant, with fresh organic produce from the property's certified 220-acre land at the heart of every plate.

Please advise us of any food allergies or intolerances at the time of booking. If you have severe allergies, bringing some of your own snacks is recommended, as specialist ingredients can be harder to source on the island.

Note: Drinks and alcohol are not included with meals, with the exception of tea, coffee and juice served with breakfast.

More About This Trip

The walk both starts and finishes at Flinders Island Airport, near Whitemark, Tasmania. Flights to Flinders Island are operated by Sharp Airlines from Essendon (near Melbourne) and Launceston. Seats are limited, so booking early is advisable.

A transfer from the airport to your accommodation is included on arrival, and you will be returned to the airport in good time on the final day.

Spring brings wildflowers to the heathland and the island's wildlife at its most active. Autumn offers settled, mild days and a quieter atmosphere on the trails. Flinders Island's temperate coastal climate is mild and never extreme, but pack a waterproof and warm layer whatever the season; conditions can shift quickly on the coast.

Tracks vary in quality but are all easily navigable, taking in rocky shorelines, sandy beaches, and well-formed paths. There are opportunities for fitter walkers to push further, and two knowledgeable guides lead throughout with easier and harder options available along the way. Sturdy walking boots with reliable grip are essential.

A regular training routine of two to three times per week in the months before departure is sufficient preparation.

You must hold adequate travel insurance for your trip, including cover for personal liability and accidental injury and illness. For all trips involving international travel, your policy must also include emergency medical treatment, evacuation and repatriation cover. We strongly recommend your policy also covers trip cancellation and curtailment, and loss of or damage to luggage.

A cancellation fee usually applies if you cancel after your booking is confirmed. Travel insurance with cancellation cover will generally cover this fee, so it's worth arranging your policy at the time of booking.

Full insurance requirements are set out in our booking terms and conditions.

A detailed information pack and itinerary will be sent to you around six weeks before departure, covering everything you need to know for a seamless experience. In the meantime, our team is always on hand to answer any questions.

The Furneaux Museum at Emita, about 18 kilometres north of Whitemark, tells the story of the Furneaux Group through shipwrecks, muttonbirding, the Soldier Settlement Scheme and the Wybalenna settlement, where surviving Palawa people were relocated in the 1830s and which remains one of the most significant Aboriginal heritage sites in Tasmania. The Strait Works Gallery in Whitemark is a community-run gallery presenting a new exhibition each month from local and visiting artists, with original island-made art, craft, jewellery and photography available through its summer shop.

The Flinders Island walking was fantastic. Great walking, good support by Marc and good food. Flinders Island is a special place well worth exploring.

The walks followed well prepared & mostly shady tracks up the granite spine of the island. The coastal sections flowed from sandy, often secluded beaches, lichen covered boulders and crystal clear watery coves to ever changing vantage points. A sheer delight.

A very good place to walk. Good group of people and great guided. Great accommodation, good food, good group and great guides who look after you. We had great guides who looked after us until we flew out, some a day later.

Great guides and lots of local knowledge Great to participate in our first Park Run Also the wombat lady is a marvel Great swimming in clear blue water along sandy beaches. Entire walk went extremely well. Well organised and could vary the walks according to the weather.

One of the loveliest hikes in terms of varied terrain: rocky hills and outcrops, spectacular isolated beaches and both coastal and bush bushland. The two guides David and Kathleen were remarkable: very experienced, friendly, always helpful and with a wealth of knowledge. They constantly ensured the enjoyment of all hikers and shared knowledge broadly about a broad range of topics and features at Flinders Island.

Guides were very flexible and accommodating. I especially appreciated how they blended local experiences into the walking sessions e.g. visiting the possum lady, local winery and museum. Terrific variety of terrains covered in this walk, and plenty of opportunities to swim in the crystal clear waters around Flinders Island also. Hot tub at the end of the day and extraordinarily excellent catering, made this trip a stand out.
