The Flinders Island Highlights walk takes in the three must-do walks on the island, a destination where photos can never do it justice. Pristine sandy beaches are likely to be entirely private, and the serenity here is unlike anywhere else.
The walking is breathtakingly beautiful for a place that remains so unknown. The coastline is punctuated by red lichen-covered boulders that have made the Bay of Fires famous, but on Flinders Island they appear in far greater numbers.
Highlights
Hike to the top of the tallest peak on the island, Mt Strzelecki
Enjoy boulder hopping and beach walking to Castle Rock
Stunning coastline walk via magnificent windswept carved rock
The azure blue water for swimmers at Stacky's Bight
Stay in comfort on Flinders Island and be treated with delicious local produce

How We Rate This Walk
2
Auswalk Walking Grade
Easy to Moderate
Rated by our team — we walk every route before we recommend it.
Mostly flat terrain with some gentle inclines. Suitable for anyone with basic fitness who enjoys walking.
Settle into a self-contained apartment directly across from the beach for four nights, with en-suite facilities throughout and the island's walking trails within easy reach from the moment you arrive.
What You'll Eat
Good food is built into every day of this walk. Four breakfasts are included throughout, provided each morning before heading out on the trail. Three walker's lunches are taken at some of the island's most spectacular locations on walking days, with an insulated lunch bag and silicone collapsible tub supplied for each walker. Four two-course dinners are taken at a variety of restaurants in and around Whitemark in the evenings, with meals at the far end of the island prepared by the same chefs behind the well-regarded local wharf restaurant.
Please advise us of any food allergies or intolerances at the time of booking. If you have severe allergies, bringing some of your own snacks is recommended, as specialist ingredients can be harder to source on the island.
Note: Drinks and alcohol are not included with meals, with the exception of tea, coffee and juice served with breakfast.
More About This Trip
The walk both starts and finishes at Flinders Island Airport, near Whitemark, Tasmania. Flights to Flinders Island are operated by Sharp Airlines from Essendon (near Melbourne) and Launceston. Seats are limited, so booking early is advisable. A transfer from the airport to your accommodation is included on arrival, and you will be returned to the airport in good time on the final day.
This walk is available throughout the year, excluding the winter months, with no fixed start days. Flinders Island has a temperate coastal climate, and the walking season is long and generous. Summer is mild by Australian standards, with comfortable walking temperatures and long daylight hours; the island never suffers the extreme heat found on the mainland. Spring and autumn offer the finest conditions, with wildflowers, active wildlife and settled days. Pack a waterproof and a warm layer whatever the season; the island's coastal exposure means the weather can shift quickly.
Tracks vary in quality but are all easily navigable, taking in rocky shorelines, sandy beaches, and well-formed paths. On-island guides can adjust walks to suit the weather or personal preference, including shortening or swapping stages as needed. Sturdy walking boots with reliable grip are essential.
A regular training routine of two to three times per week in the months before departure is sufficient preparation. Daily walk notes, maps, and GPX tracks are provided.
You must hold adequate travel insurance for your trip, including cover for personal liability and accidental injury and illness. For all trips involving international travel, your policy must also include emergency medical treatment, evacuation and repatriation cover. We strongly recommend your policy also covers trip cancellation and curtailment, and loss of or damage to luggage.
A cancellation fee usually applies if you cancel after your booking is confirmed. Travel insurance with cancellation cover will generally cover this fee, so it's worth arranging your policy at the time of booking.
A detailed information pack and itinerary will be sent to you around six weeks before departure, covering everything you need to know for a seamless experience. In the meantime, our team is always on hand to answer any questions.
The Furneaux Museum at Emita tells the story of the Furneaux Group through shipwrecks, muttonbirding, the Soldier Settlement Scheme and the Wybalenna settlement, where surviving Palawa people were relocated in the 1830s. The Strait Works Gallery in Whitemark is a community-run gallery presenting a new exhibition each month from local and visiting artists, with original island-made art, craft and photography available through its summer shop.

The Flinders Island walking was fantastic. Great walking, good support by Marc and good food. Flinders Island is a special place well worth exploring.

The walks followed well prepared & mostly shady tracks up the granite spine of the island. The coastal sections flowed from sandy, often secluded beaches, lichen covered boulders and crystal clear watery coves to ever changing vantage points. A sheer delight.

A very good place to walk. Good group of people and great guided. Great accommodation, good food, good group and great guides who look after you. We had great guides who looked after us until we flew out, some a day later.

Great guides and lots of local knowledge
Great to participate in our first Park Run
Also the wombat lady is a marvel
Great swimming in clear blue water along sandy beaches.
Entire walk went extremely well. Well organised and could vary the walks according to the weather.

One of the loveliest hikes in terms of varied terrain: rocky hills and outcrops, spectacular isolated beaches and both coastal and bush bushland. The two guides David and Kathleen were remarkable: very experienced, friendly, always helpful and with a wealth of knowledge. They constantly ensured the enjoyment of all hikers and shared knowledge broadly about a broad range of topics and features at Flinders Island.

Guides were very flexible and accommodating. I especially appreciated how they blended local experiences into the walking sessions e.g. visiting the possum lady, local winery and museum.
Terrific variety of terrains covered in this walk, and plenty of opportunities to swim in the crystal clear waters around Flinders Island also. Hot tub at the end of the day and extraordinarily excellent catering, made this trip a stand out.

The dept point process was very convenient. Mark was such a great person to orient us to the island and to convey us to and from the walks each day. We enjoyed his friendly company and thought he did an excellent job.

Walking routes covered different parts of the Island, allowing me to get a broader idea of the Island. Overall, our trip went extremely well.

The Auswalk Flinders Island self-guided walk that we did with friends from Melbourne was a real pleasure. From being met at the airport to being dropped off there after 7 wonderful days, it was very enjoyable visit. The accommodation was ideal, the walks interesting and varied, the locals friendly and welcoming. Flinders Island might just be one of those hidden gems.

I loved this and not knowing what to expect before I came it was so much better than I imagined. The walks were doable and the sense of achievement was satisfying after completing them all, Rose our guide on the walks was calm and encouraging and talked me through the tricky bits and was a gem. We would recommend Auswalks to anyone and loved the hiking plus the great accommodation and food. We have been looking at Queen Charlotte in NZ and Kimberley's and Kakadu, and many more...

Flinders Island is one of the most beautiful places in Australia, this was more than just going to a lovely place and walking through it, it was a cultural experience too. Kathleen and David are incredible and inspiring people. They generously shared their deep love and understanding of Flinders Island and the natural and cultural environment with us, and it was a privilege to spend time with them. They went above and beyond every day in anticipating the needs of the members of the group. I was particularly interested in learning about the Indigenous history of Flinders Island and Tasmania, and the environmental/geological features of the island and the connections with mainland Australia. By the end of the walk, I felt I had experienced the beautiful environment and rich culture of the island in quite a deep way, and I want to thank Kathleen and David for giving so much of themselves and their island life to us.

The scenery was beautiful and the diversity of the walks made each day different which was great. Including a visit to a wombat rescue place, winery and museum added to the experience. Eating at local places was a great idea - good for the local economy - and GREAT for the walkers as the food was exceptional. My Flinders Island experience was filled with great walking, exceptional food and interesting experiences. Thanks to our outstanding guides (David and Kathleen).

Delightful guides, beautiful scenery, great food. We were pleased to meet up with David and Kathleen again. They were understanding, flexible and went above and beyond to make sure we enjoyed the Flinder's Is experience. Liked the way they provided two options for the walks. My husband managed the more challenging routes and I took the shorter options.

My partner and I recently completed Australian Walking Holidays' Flinders Island Adventure and were really pleased with all aspects of the trip. Pre-trip communication was really good, incredibly professional staff, efficient and friendly, the food and accommodation (comfortable stretcher, swag and mattress) were fine, and the places we visited awe-inspiring. We will definitely use the company again and have no hesitation in recommending them.

Just completed Flinders Ranges 6 days self guided walk with upgrade to eco villas, and I have to say it was truly spectacular on every level, the organisation, the accommodation, the meals, the awesome staff at both Rawson station and Wilpena Resort. And the scenery, which we experienced in perfect weather, is majestic, colourful, unique and way more varied than we thought possible. This is a trek of a lifetime. But a note of caution. We are in our sixties and we are fit, some sections were very challengng (getting to Tanderra Saddle, and descending from Bridal Gap, for example), but being self guided meant we could compensate with other walks if something was too hard, there's plenty of options. Also 23 kms is very harsh on Day 1! Beautiful, extraordinary landscapes I wouldn't miss a meter of it, (watching the light and shadows change throughout the day on St Mary Peak is unforgettable) but it takes some of us older people way longer than the times estimated in the guides, and it can be an exhausting start. And finally some more photos of the track in the guidebook wouldn't go astray at some of the less clearly marked spots, especially when you need to make a decision. But overall I can't rate this holiday highly enough, including Auswalks, who have been a joy to organise it with.

Dave & Kathleen were terrific! They were very accommodating, considerate and helpful and made sure that we all got the best out of the walks, tailoring them to our different capabilities. It was also great to have guides in a similar age group to me (for a change). The walks were very varied and the guides' knowledge of the island was a great bonus, making them so much more interesting. The extra-curricular activities were a joy: the wombat sanctuary and the visit to the vineyard - an unexpected bonus.

Another excellent Auswalk hike. Nothing was too much trouble for local guides David and Kathleen. From the early morning airport pickup until the late afternoon drop off, they were always available, warm and welcoming. They both clearly love the island and made sure we left with a genuine understanding of the history of the area. Tassie weather was kind us, warm, no rain and not much wind. The seven day itinerary meant hiking days could be swapped around depending on the weather. Two highlights were the Mount Strzelecki hike, hard going up, harder coming down and an afternoon swim at Allports Beach.
A quiet unspoilt Island well worth visiting.

This walk was a real adventure, and absolutely loved it The weather was perfect, and you were almost always under canopy so very sheltered from the sun. We were on our own a lot so it felt like we had the island to ourselves....it was so peaceful and relaxing. We were super impressed with the walking guides and they were easy to follow, and never in doubt we were going the wrong way. Lastly, the drop offs and pick offs were very personal and we could change the times to suit us - this was fantastic and made the trip even more enjoyable

As usual Auswalk's organisation was top-class. The walking was a variety of coastal and on beach walks with brilliant contrast of white sand, blue water and orange lichen covered boulders, and mountains with great views and interesting vegetation and boulders beside the tracks. The very challenging Strzelecki Peaks was well managed by our guides to enable every one to make it as far as they could - done in a thoughtful and caring manner. The skill, knowledge and friendliness of the guides really makes Auswalk standout as a company to walk and holiday with - thanks Marie.
Accommodation and meals were top class - well done Annie.

One of Australia's best kept secrets. Accommodation, guides, walks are a credit to Auswalk. This was our 4th walk with them and have never been disappointed. This would have to be a dream walk for anyone but don't think it's glamping because there are some challenging options if you want. So go to Flinders with Auswalk before the rest of the world discover it.

We've done one guided walk (Flinders Island) and two self-guided (WA Cape to Cape and Victoria's Great SW Walk) with Auswalk in the last 5 years. Each time we've had a wonderful experience - fantastic walking, memorable accommodation and hosts, and (mostly) great food. The folks at Auswalk pay huge attention to detail when organising trips and when writing notes for the self-guided walks. With the understandable disclaimer that the remoteness of some locations limits the choices for accommodation and meals, they clearly make an effort to pamper walkers at the start and end of each day.
Our recent Great SW Walk was the shorter version - about half of the 250 km total. We began and ended in Portland, with much of the initial forest section omitted, but most of the beautiful river sections and spectacular coastal sections included. Auswalk were happy to accommodate our request for 7 rather than 6 days' walking, which allowed us to spread out the unusually long first two days (~27 km each) to three days of ~20, 14 and 20 km - a much more pleasant way to begin, allowing us to enjoy each day without pressure.
As for accommodation on the GSWW - the beautifully renovated Lorelei B&B in Portland (built in 1915 as a doctor's home / office), was a particular favourite. Roger was an excellent and generous host offering an amazing breakfast and complimentary wine, beer and nibbles each evening. We loved sitting in the bay window looking out at the rose garden, sipping a glass of sparkling wine before dinner. We also had a memorable stay at the Nelson Cottage B&B, where our room used to be a police station (built in 1885 and comfortably updated), and where we greatly enjoyed John & Trish's warm hospitality. John's extensive knowledge of the area was a bonus.
We frequently come to Australia from Canada to visit family. Each time we look forward to including another Auswalk in our plans. Based on our experience, we recommend Auswalk without reservation.
