Vietnam

Vietnam stretches from the misty highlands of the north to the river deltas of the south, a country of extraordinary natural beauty and deep cultural richness. In the northern highlands around Sapa, dramatic rice terraces cascade down mountain slopes above remote ethnic minority villages that have changed little over centuries.

This data is based on Hanoi weather, which is representative of Northern Vietnam's climate patterns, including popular trekking areas like Sapa, Ha Long Bay, and Mai Chau.

The optimal time for walking and trekking in Northern Vietnam is late September to November, with a secondary favourable window from March to May.

Autumn (September-November) - Peak Season

October, November, and December offer the best hiking conditions in northern Vietnam, with relatively cool and dry weather that keeps trails from becoming too muddy while maintaining good visibility. Late September or October, just after the rains have passed, is particularly ideal for trekking with picture-postcard perfect scenery and pleasantly cool weather  September through November is widely regarded as the best time to visit North Vietnam, offering favorable weather conditions with temperatures ranging from 15°C to 25°C (59°F to 77°F) and reduced rainfall. This period also showcases the harvest season with golden terraced rice fields that are breathtaking.

Spring (March-May) - Second Best Option

The spring months of March, April, and May bring good hiking weather to central Vietnam, typically sunny but not too hot, with brief rainstorms. Northern Vietnam's Sapa and Ha Giang areas work well during spring months from March to May, with good conditions and flowering landscapes.  This season offers comfortable temperatures for trekking before the summer heat arrives.

Winter (December-February) - Cold but Dry

The best time for trekking in Vietnam's northern highlands runs from October to April, though temperatures can be uncomfortably cool at night in December and January. It tends to get pretty cold up in the hills in December and January, so bringing a jumper is essential. While conditions are dry and good for walking, the cold temperatures at higher elevations may be challenging.

Avoid: Summer (June-August)

Summer should be avoided as it is very wet and very hot — the worst conditions for trekking. Heavy rainfall during this period makes trails muddy, slippery, and potentially dangerous.
