Overview

Jagged peaks rise straight out of the sea in the Lofoten Islands, and over eight days you’ll hike some of the best of them. Climb Reinebringen on your first day on the islands for one of the most photographed views in Norway, looking down over the fishing village of Reine. Push on past mountain lakes to the 360° panorama from the Munken summit, then look down on Kvalvika Beach from the top of Ryten. Until mid-August, a morning ferry carries you across Kjerkfjorden to remote Horseid Beach. After that the ferry timetable changes, so we swap in the walk to Bunes Beach instead. You’ll base yourself in Reine and then Nusfjord, with a rental car to get you between trailheads. This is a walk for experienced hikers. Much of the terrain is rough and rocky, and the Arctic weather can change quickly.

Please note: This walking holiday includes car hire for self-driving. Drivers must hold a valid driver’s licence and be over 23 years of age.

Where You'll Stay

You’ll start and finish in Bodø, a modern hotel in the centre of town with spacious rooms and a good breakfast buffet. On the islands, you’ll spend three nights at Catogarten in Reine, right in the middle of the walking. Bathrooms here are shared, so expect to share facilities for those three nights. Then you’ll move along the coast for two nights at Nusfjorden Rorbu, staying in a traditional rorbu, one of the fishermen’s cabins that line Lofoten’s harbours. Expect a homely feel on the islands, with lounges or dining areas where you can put your feet up after a big day on the hills. Occasionally we may substitute a property of an equivalent standard.

What You'll Eat

The included breakfasts feature local ingredients to set you up before the day's hiking begins. Lunch and dinner are yours to discover, and the Lofoten Islands offer a good spread of options along the way, with fresh seafood and Norwegian staples featuring prominently on local menus.

Note: Please advise us of any food allergies or intolerances at the time of booking. If you have severe allergies, bringing some of your own snacks is recommended, as specialist ingredients can be harder to source in more remote parts of the islands.

More About This Trip

The walk starts and finishes in Bodø, Norway. Bodø Airport (BOO) only has regional flights, so you’ll most likely fly into Oslo (OSL) first and connect to Bodø. Make your own way to the hotel and check in from around 3pm on Day 1. The trip ends on Day 8 after breakfast, with hotel check-out at around 11am.

This walk is available from June through August. The season is set to make the most of the Lofoten midnight sun, when the sun hovers above the horizon through the night and the mountains can be walked at any hour. July is the warmest and busiest month. August brings slightly fewer crowds, 15 to 20 hours of daylight and excellent conditions for hiking.

From mid-August, the ferries switch to winter timetables. You won’t have enough time ashore for Horseid Beach, so on Day 5 you’ll walk to Bunes Beach instead.

The weather above the Arctic Circle is changeable. Temperatures can drop from 15°C to 5°C even in the middle of August, and rain and wind make the going harder. Pack waterproofs and warm layers, whatever the forecast says.

This is a walk for experienced hikers. Lofoten has few established trails, so much of your walking is off-trail over rough, rocky ground, where thick vegetation can hide uneven footing. Judge each day by the terrain as much as by the distance or climb.

Wear sturdy, waterproof walking boots with good ankle support and grip. Trekking poles are strongly recommended for the steep and rocky sections.

Elevation is the main thing to train for. Include serious hill climbs in your preparation, or use a treadmill or stair climber if hills aren’t nearby. Squats, lunges and core work will build the strength and stability you need on this terrain.

Daily walk notes, maps, and GPX tracks are provided.

The ferry.

On Day 2, the ferry takes you from Bodø to Moskenes in the Lofoten Islands, where the walking begins. On Day 7, you take the same ferry back. The ferry fares are not included in the trip price.

Ferry from Bodø to Moskenes: 3.5 to 4 hours (not included).
Ferry from Reine to Kjerkfjord for Horseid Beach: 40 minutes (not included).
Ferry from Reine to Vindstad for Bunes Beach (not included).

How does the car hire work?

You’ll collect your car when you arrive by ferry at Moskenes on Day 2. You return it to the same spot on Day 7 before the evening ferry back to Bodø. The car depends on your group size, and examples include a VW Polo, Suzuki S-Cross, Toyota Corolla, Opel Zafira or Toyota Avensis.

Does the car go on the ferry? Yes, the car will go on the ferry on the days with ferry transfers scheduled.

Where do we drop off the car?

You’ll drop the car off at Moskenes on Day 7, the same place you picked it up on Day 2.

Both the driver and the primary renter must be at least 23 years old, and shall provide a valid driving license. The car is rented out with a full tank and should be returned with a full tank.

Each booking is made with full insurance coverage.

There are no luggage transfers on this trip. Instead, your bags travel with you. You’ll take your luggage on the ferry, then carry it in your rental car from there.

On the trail, you’ll only need a daypack with water, lunch, rain gear, warm layers and the essentials. Pack light and keep it to one main bag plus your daypack. Keep your passport and valuables with you at all times.

You must hold adequate travel insurance for your trip, including cover for personal liability and accidental injury and illness. For all trips involving international travel, your policy must also include emergency medical treatment, evacuation and repatriation cover. We strongly recommend your policy also covers trip cancellation and curtailment, and loss of or damage to luggage.

A cancellation fee usually applies if you cancel after your booking is confirmed. Travel insurance with cancellation cover will generally cover this fee, so it's worth arranging your policy at the time of booking.

Full insurance requirements are set out in our booking terms and conditions.

For your safety and well-being, we are unable to accept bookings for solo walkers on this itinerary. The remote nature of some tracks and limited mobile reception mean that walking alone presents a higher risk in case of emergencies.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes — a full rental car is included from Day 2 to Day 7, picked up at Moskenes on arrival by ferry. It's your key to getting between trailheads and accommodations across the islands, and driving distances are generally short and scenic. You're responsible for fuel, tolls, parking fees and any fines during the rental period, so return it with a full tank.

The mix is part of what makes this trip. Two nights in Bodø are spent at the Skagen Hotel, a comfortable three-star with a generous breakfast buffet. On the islands, you'll stay in traditional fishermen's cabins — rorbuer — alongside lodges and B&Bs, all chosen for their local character and setting. Most have communal lounges and dining areas, and WiFi is available throughout at no extra cost.

A daypack in the 25–30L range is ideal. Pack water, snacks, a waterproof jacket, warm layers, sun protection, your walk notes, a first aid kit and your phone. The smartphone navigation app included with the trip runs on your phone, so a power bank is worth bringing — reception is patchy in places and you'll want the battery to last.

Conditions in the Lofoten Islands can change quickly even in summer, so layers and waterproofs are non-negotiable. Quick-drying, technical fabrics work best — avoid cotton. A quality waterproof jacket with a hood is essential, as are warm mid-layers for the ridgelines and summits. Temperatures average 10°C–16°C but feel colder with wind at elevation. Waterproof over-trousers, a warm hat and gloves are worth packing even in July.

The walk is graded moderate, but it has some genuinely steep sections — several hikes, including Reinebringen and Tindstinden, involve sharp ascents on varied terrain with days regularly exceeding 12km. Building up your legs before you go makes a real difference, as elevation change tends to be harder on the body than distance.

Yes, and it's a condition of booking. Your policy must cover injury, cancellation, luggage loss and medical evacuation. Store a copy of your passport on your phone and never pack the original in your main luggage.

Norway's currency is the Norwegian Krone (NOK). Most lunches and several dinners are not included in the package, so budget accordingly — Norway is an expensive country for eating out. Card payments are widely accepted across Scandinavia, but having some NOK on hand is useful in smaller villages. Tipping is not customary in Norway the way it is in some other destinations, so no need to factor that into your budget.

Let the team know about any allergies or intolerances at booking. The accommodations with on-site restaurants — including Brygga Restaurant at Å Rorbuer, which focuses on fresh local Lofoten fish — can generally accommodate dietary needs. On days where you're sourcing your own meals, the villages along the route have cafes and local options to choose from.
