The Camino Finisterre (Section 6 of the Camino) is one of the most beautiful Camino trails. The trail has you walk west out of Santiago de Compostela for 90km to the end of the earth to Cape Fisterra. The Finisterre Way includes the stunning section along the Atlantic Coast. The Atlantic is the traditional end of the Camino.


Pre-dating Christianity, the Camino Finisterre was once a pagan pilgrimage to the mythical Cape Fisterra on the Costa da Morte ('The Coast of Death'). The pagans believed this was where the sun died and the world of the dead and the living rubbed up against each other. A magical place, rich in pagan rites and legends, and the location of Ara Solis - an altar dedicated to the dying sun.

Arrive Santiago de Compostela

Arrive in Santiago and enjoy the spectacular atmosphere of this world-famous city. You can visit the Plaza de Obradoiro and the Cathedral built in honour of Saint James and depending on the day, you may even be able to attend mass. Often these 5 days of walking on the Camino Finisterre are part of the completion of a longer pilgrimage that continues from Santiago to the coast for pilgrims to bathe after their long journeys.

Accommodation throughout this tour reflects the spirit of the Camino. The properties are characterful, family-run hotels and guesthouses that have been receiving walkers for many years, all with en-suite rooms and an atmosphere shaped by guests who are all on the same journey. On occasion, alternative properties of equivalent quality may be substituted for those listed.

If you are travelling with others but would prefer a single room, we recommend booking as early as possible. Availability can be limited on this popular stage and a single occupancy fee applies.

What You'll Eat

Six breakfasts are included throughout the trip, served at your accommodation before each day's walking begins. For lunch, the Camino provides its own opportunities, with local cheeses, cured meats and a wide variety of breads available to pick up along the route. Many properties along the way have their own restaurants serving regional food made with local ingredients, and dinner can be added as a supplement each evening for those who would like it included.

Note: Please advise us of any food allergies or intolerances at the time of booking. If you have severe allergies, bringing some of your own snacks is recommended, as specialist ingredients can be harder to source along the way.

More About This Trip

The walk starts in Santiago de Compostela and finishes in Finisterre, on the Atlantic coast of Galicia. Santiago de Compostela Airport (SCQ) is the most convenient entry point, with international connections across Europe. The airport is linked to the city centre by regular bus. For those travelling by rail, high-speed trains connect Madrid Chamartín to Santiago in around 7 hours, with connections available from other major Spanish cities.

Finisterre is a small, remote coastal town with no rail link. The most practical way to depart is by bus back to Santiago de Compostela. Taxis are an option, though the cost can add up quickly given the distance. We can assist with arranging your return to Santiago. Book Spanish rail tickets in advance through Renfe.


This walk is available from March to October, with no fixed start days. March can be quiet and atmospheric, but expect cool temperatures, some frosty mornings and the chance of rain in Galicia. Conditions improve steadily through April and May, when the countryside is green and wildflowers line the coastal path. Late May through June and September into early October are widely considered the ideal months, combining comfortable temperatures, more settled weather and manageable numbers of fellow walkers. July and August are warm and sociable, with a lively atmosphere in the coastal towns, though the route is at its busiest. Autumn brings dramatic Atlantic light, changing colours in the countryside and a quieter, more contemplative feel on the trail. Throughout the season, Galician literature festivals and the nationwide celebrations of Semana Santa add colour to the journey. Waterproofs are worth packing whatever the month.

This 90-kilometre trail to Finisterre is well-defined throughout, following an ancient pilgrim route across varied terrain. Expect rocky paths, farm and forest tracks, and long open stretches of countryside, with sustained climbs to hilltop towns and villages. Some sections run alongside roads, so walkers should remain mindful of traffic at all times. Good walking boots are essential.

Daily walks cover up to 24 kilometres with up to 500 metres of ascent and descent. You should be comfortable with both the distance and the elevation before setting out. An exercise regime of two to three times per week, in addition to regular walking, is recommended in preparation.

The route is waymarked throughout by the iconic scallop-shell markers, and with fellow pilgrims on the trail, navigation is straightforward. Daily walk notes, maps, and GPX tracks are provided.

You must hold adequate travel insurance for your trip, including cover for personal liability and accidental injury and illness. For all trips involving international travel, your policy must also include emergency medical treatment, evacuation and repatriation cover. We strongly recommend your policy also covers trip cancellation and curtailment, and loss of or damage to luggage.

A cancellation fee usually applies if you cancel after your booking is confirmed. Travel insurance with cancellation cover will generally cover this fee, so it's worth arranging your policy at the time of booking.

After having such an incredible time on our Camino Frances and Camino Finisterre routes, my sister and I are already planning on doing the Portugese Camino next year and the Japanese Camino the following year. We are looking forward to getting back on the trail ASAP! Very professional. We had the best time on our Camino and Auswalk made it seamless. You guys took all the stress out of it so all we had to do was enjoy our walk each day! I've already recommended you to so many of my friends. The whole trip was amazing! The highlight (or one of) was knowing that we had fabulous accommodation waiting for us each day, so we didn't need to rush or compete for a bed!

When you’re already on the ground you don’t even need the trail notes/ walking routes. You just get on with the flow. You will never get lost. If you plan to do the Camino de Santiago, look no further than Auswalk. Seamless and you are in good hands.

Frequently asked questions

Unfortunately, walkers cannot travel with the luggage. The information you are provided with has details for local taxi numbers, bus and train timetables should you wish to not walk on any day. Your accommodation hosts will also have up to date information and advice should you wish to travel to the next destination by local transport. As always, you can call us in the office should you need help during your walk.

Santiago, of course! This city is worthy of an extra day and not just to further explore the grand cathedral. Santiago boasts a wealth of medieval architecture, tapas bars and restaurants. We can also arrange an onward walk to the coastal point of Finisterre. Regarded as the end of the world by the Romans, many pilgrims continue on walking for several days to reach Finisterre. Having completed the Camino, it is an extra 4 days to reach Finisterre with a transfer back to Santiago on the fifth day.

Of course, please let us know at the time of booking if you would like to extend your time in Santiago.

We don't allow children under the age of 16 to do this walk.

Subject to a single occupancy payment, single rooms are available. However, due to the limited accommodation single rooms might not always be available for every night of the tour, but we will let you know your options throughout the booking process.

We wouldn’t suggest completing the itinerary in less than 4 days of walking.
