"The trails are virtually empty, giving you a genuine sense of solitude and wilderness. The reward for getting out there is epic: sweeping views and a raw, red ochre outback landscape as dramatic as anywhere in Australia, but at a fraction of the effort required to reach more remote destinations. There are four route options in the Flinders to suit a wide range of fitness levels. "
– Brett Neagle, Founder & CEO

How We Rate This Walk

Auswalk Walking Grade
Moderate to Challenging
Rated by our team — we walk every route before we recommend it.
Regular hills and varied terrain. These walks involve more challenging sections. Regular walking beforehand is recommended.
Nights are spent in two outstanding properties that make the most of their extraordinary surroundings. The award-winning Eco Villas at Rawnsley Park Station offer fully appointed kitchens, ensuites and a private lounge, while at Wilpena Pound, luxury glamping tents with ensuites sit within one of Australia's most iconic natural amphitheatres. Both properties are as memorable as the walking itself.
What You'll Eat
Two-course à la carte dinners and cooked breakfasts are prepared by in-house chefs at both properties, with a focus on regional South Australian produce and wine. Kangaroo and emu occasionally feature on the menu, and world-class South Australian wines are always within easy reach. A substantial packed lunch is provided each day and enjoyed at a memorable spot on the track. If you enjoy a pre-dinner drink, we suggest bringing your own wine as the restaurants are licensed but drinks are not included in the package.
Note: Drinks and alcohol are not included with meals, with the exception of tea, coffee and juice served with breakfast.
More About This Trip
This holiday starts and finishes in Rawnsley Park. The best option by far is to use a vehicle. This will allow you the freedom to travel up to the walk at your own pace. There's a stack of interesting places to visit that require no real deviation from your journey, including wineries. We highly recommend staying in Clare, South Australia's primo wine destination on the way back. There are also a few walks on the way that can be explored.
Please note that it is not possible to travel the whole way to the start of this walk via public transport. Private transfers would be required and are very expensive.
More information on transport to the Flinders Ranges is available on request.
The Flinders Ranges is best walked between April and September, when temperatures are ideal for hiking and the landscape is at its most dramatic. Nights can be cold so warm layers are essential. October is possible but temperatures begin to climb, averaging around 26 degrees. The walk is not available from December to February, when summer heat regularly exceeds 40 degrees and conditions are unsuitable for walking.
The terrain covers mostly flat bush tracks and well-worn paths, with some rocky sections and two days involving steeper climbs. Easier options are available on some days for those who prefer a more relaxed pace. A good level of fitness is recommended, and incorporating a rest day is strongly advised to make the most of the experience and the region.
You must hold adequate travel insurance for your trip, including cover for personal liability and accidental injury and illness. For all trips involving international travel, your policy must also include emergency medical treatment, evacuation and repatriation cover. We strongly recommend your policy also covers trip cancellation and curtailment, and loss of or damage to luggage.
A cancellation fee usually applies if you cancel after your booking is confirmed. Travel insurance with cancellation cover will generally cover this fee, so it's worth arranging your policy at the time of booking.
A detailed information pack and itinerary will be sent to you around six weeks before departure, covering everything you need to know for a seamless experience. In the meantime, our team is always on hand to answer any questions.
For your safety and well-being, we are unable to accept bookings for solo walkers on this itinerary. The remote nature of some tracks and limited mobile reception mean that walking alone presents a higher risk in case of emergencies.

Well organised walk and trip in the Flinders Ranges.

Very well organised trip. The hikes were excellent and certainly valued the experience of the guides who ensured we got the best out of each activity, and each day. Accommodation and food at Rawnsley park Station were better than anticipated. Itinerary was well structured and Georgie and Chris made some good calls to adjust owing to weather, road conditions and changes at Rawnsley lookout. This was my first guided walk in Australia and was very glad I did it. Really enjoyed the week !

The Auswalk Flinders self-guided walk that we did with friends from Melbourne was a real pleasure. From being met at the airport to being dropped off there after 7 wonderful days, it was very enjoyable visit. The accommodation was ideal, the walks interesting and varied, the locals friendly and welcoming. Flinders might just be one of those hidden gems.

I loved these 5 days and not knowing what to expect before I came it was so much better than I imagined. The walks were doable and the sense of achievement was satisfying after completing them all, Rose our guide on the walks was calm and encouraging and talked me through the tricky bits and was a gem. We would recommend Auswalks to anyone and loved the hiking plus the great accommodation and food. We have been looking at Queen Charlotte in NZ and Kimberley's and Kakadu, and many more...

This 6 day (4 walking days) walk was fantastic! Auswalks had everything perfectly organised. From the get-go the team had great communication with us. Their partners, Rawnsley Station and Wilpena Resort, were excellent. The Eco units at Rawnsley Station were fabulous. Ultimate in comfort and really kept to being green - down to loose tea, compost bin and no plastic packaging on food items. Wilpena's Glamping Tents were also terrific. Very comfortable, quiet and fabulous views. The restaurant was really good at Wilpena. All staff at both resorts were excellent.
As for the walk, the notes were invaluable (big congrats to the writer of the notes - we felt you were there with us!) and the app really does let you know when you go off track! The route for the walk took us through varied beautiful country. Walking day 1 was the least varied and long. Good views at the beginning of the day's walk. Walking day 2 was the climb to St Mary's Peak. So worthwhile and great fun with rock scrambles toward the top. Walking day 3 was across the Pound then up and over the southern wall. The different vegetation you walk through on such flat ground is astonishing! Walking day 4 gave us different iconic views. All fabulous!
This is not an easy walk. It can be challenging, giving a good work out. But without a doubt the whole trip was rewarding. We loved it! Thank you Auswalks - and Rawnsley Station and Wilpena Pound Resort.

This was my first trip with AusWalk and it certainly won’t be my last. Our guides, Georgie and Clare, were both terrific and managed each day’s logistics with good humour and organisation.
They were also, respectively, good company whilst never compromising their guests’ wellbeing and safety. As a reasonably novice hiker, I never felt any pressure to walk at anything other than my own pace and appreciated the option of a less challenging (still incredible) walk each day. This is in stark contrast to a previous trip I had with a different company and I was relieved and pleased to discover that the mantra “it’s about the journey, not the destination” was a reality with Georgie and Clare.
Meals and accommodation provided at Rawnsley Park Station were fine and the station was an excellent choice as a base to rest before the next day’s activities (reviewed separately).
As a solo traveller, I’m always a little apprehensive regarding potential group dynamics but Georgie and Clare were very inclusive, creating a happy group of hikers throughout the trip. That’s not always easy to do, I imagine, but they certainly managed this comfortably and indiscernibly.
Overall, I loved this trip - from my first inquiries and questions to AusWalk through to a wonderful 5 days away, I can’t fault any aspects of it - extraordinary landscapes, good company, and comfortable accommodation made for a wonderful holiday.

Our two guides were friendly and well organised. Everything went smoothly and we had lots of fun.
The walking was challenging but there were several options so you could choose at the level you wanted.
What a fantastic group of people, with so much laughter, conversation, sharing and getting to know each other

A beautiful way to experience the magnificence of the Flinders Ranges! There is no better reward then to experience the spirit of a place then by foot and of your own volition ! Once you get used to spotting the markers its easy peasy and the book notes and App are invaluable . We unfortunately began with some pre existing leg issues so we found the first day very challenging but we made it through and were able to make some necessary changes to the walking program to better suit us personally. We were very grateful too for the day of rest we had scheduled after the first big day of walking, and in hindsight, on a personal note, as we are in our 60’s and so we could really experience and take in the spirit of certain spaces without worrying we would complete the long distance in time, we would probably ensure we book hikes of around 10-12km per day. But having said that we are elated that we did it and got to experience spaces we would not have if not for this beautifully curated hike, the friendliness, and kindness of all the staff in both Rawnsley Park and Ikara Resort!
In closing, we highly recommend booking in an extra day whether for rest or just to take it all in!

The walk was amazing and so wonderfully beautiful and full of surprises.
The two guides Georgie and Bec were incredible, funny and knowledgeable. They looked after everyone so well, including me big time.
Organisation was exceptional, on time, full of yummy food and the company of the others on the walk was easy and relaxing.
I would absolutely recommend it, once in a life time experience.

Right from the beginning, I was pleased I had chosen to go with Auswalk. The walks were challenging (for me), the guides inspired confidence, accommodation was good, meals were great. My only complaint is that I seem to have brought home an extra couple of kilos. Georgie and Bec are great guides. They balanced their roles as leaders and friends with our group very well. I had total confidence in their knowledge and advice and they are both excellent drivers.

Flinders Ranges 7 Days Self Guided was challenging but amazing. Be aware you could walk for days without seeing a single person. Signage and written instructions were excellent. The rugged beauty of the ranges and variation of the landscape highlights.
Our accommodation, meals and transport wonderful. If you can stretch your budget, I recommend upgrading to the Eco Villas at Rawnsley Park - superb!

We have done three supported walks with Auswalk, The Flinder’s Ranges and The Gold Cost Hinterland unguided and Larapinta Trail guided. All were well designed, well organised and most enjoyable. We’d be happy to walk with Auswalk again.

This is my second walk with Auswalk (Flinders Ranges, 5 day, group guided) and I loved it. The guides were experienced and interesting and the food at Rawnsley Park Station was exceptional. However, the best thing about the trip was the magnificent walks we did. Every one of them was different and spectacular. They were a little more challenging than I would venture on my own, but with the group and guides I accomplished them all and felt a real sense of achievement at the end. Thanks Auswalk. I will be back!

Thank you Auswalk for another wonderful experience. The scenery and walks were magnificent and the food and accomodation was also of a very high standard. A thoroughly professional and well run tour and we are already looking forward to our next Auswalk adventure.

I really loved this trip, I knew nothing about the flinders ranges prior to this trip and was blown away with the incredible views. The scenery was amazing As with my previous walks with Auswalk the guides are awesome- they go out of their way to make sure everyone is happy. The option for “shorter” walks is also a great opportunity for more people to have access to the incredible Australian outdoors

We loved the Flinders Ranges self-guided walk. It is a beautiful part of Australia and while much damage has been done since European settlement, the Ranges walk is fabulous and educational. The accommodation at all three sites easily met our expectations and the staff providing services were always friendly and helpful.

Our self guided walk included excellent route notes and some spectacular scenery. We enjoyed the variety of accomodation and also the many different environments we walked through. Wilpena Pound was beautiful and the morning chorus not to be missed. Don’t miss out on checking out the night sky as it is spectacular.

Magnificent scenery, accommodation well above expectation considering the location and the food was to die for. If you want to really see outback Australia this is the place to go (and make sure you allow a couple of days after to explore the wineries in the Clare Valley on the way back to Adelaide). I would recommend though that you are relatively fit as there a couple of very difficult sections of scrambling over rocks heading up to St Mary Peak and the Bluff.

Auswalks is our company of choice. We have done 15 multi-day walks of this type, i.e. day pack only and food/lodging arranged and love self-guided walks because we can walk at our own pace. Auswalks are so helpful and extremely flexible right from the start of booking and arranging the walk that the process is very easy. The organisation while on the walk is reliable and the notes provided to guide one on the walk itself are first rate. We had to terminate our most recent walk early because of a sad family circumstance and that was also managed by Natasha with care and compassion. We are already planning another walk and hope to do others in the future including going back to complete the one we could not finish. I recommend Auswalks to anyone I talk to about walking.

Once again Auswalk provided us with a great experience, both in terms of the walks and the accommodation and our hosts. A big thanks to the Auswalk team who rearranged our walks to meet our changed circumstances. We enjoyed the walks and they were the right length and difficulty for us. Accommodation and meals were great and it was enjoyable to sit around chatting with our hosts and learning more about the Victorian alpine region. This was our second walk with Auswalk and we can highly recommend them.

A fantastic experience for seven friends over five days of walking. Each day was amazing and over differing terrain with brilliant views as the reward. The walks were challenging but achievable with the encouragement and assistance of our professional guides Katie and Bec who were able to offer alternatives and changes to suit our group. Nothing was too much trouble. The Woolshed restaurant provided great meals. The other experiences provided, sunset drinks and nibbles and helicopter flight over the area added that extra enjoyment to our visit. Would definitely walk again with Auswalk.

We have travelled with AusWalk twice - once on a guided walk in the Flinders Range and the second a self guided walk in the Victoria Alps. Both were excellent - well planned, great walking notes, comfortable accommodation and good meals. On the guided walks the guides were knowledgable of the local area - history and environment - and managed the group well. The walks varied from easy to quite challenging and this was clearly explained by the guides and in the notes. There were no surprises when it came to where we were going and what to expect. The AusWalk staff are excellent - they were able to rearrange our self guided walk to take into account some changes to our circumstances. We will certainly use AusWalk again.

Our sixth walk with Auswalk was to the Flinders Ranges, 200 km NW from Adelaide. The walks were spectacular, the guides wonderful and everything was organised extremely well. We can also recommend walks to Snowy Mountains, Kangaroo Island, Timeless North (Kakadu, Litchfield, Catherine in NT), Canarvon Gorge and Gold Coast Hinterland. Most days there is an easier option and the group dynamics are generally very good.

My 3rd guided walk with Auswalk and not the last. Ably led by experienced guides/drivers/cooks Katie and Bill. The walks all require a reasonable level of sure footedness and agility, so make sure you actually enjoy being in a rugged remote location before you commit to this walk. The trip itinerary gives an accurate description of daily walking options and both easier and harder were available each day. The trails are rocky so good soled boots essential. The views are spectacular. We saw many emus, kangaroos, birds, goats and a couple of shinglebacked(?) lizards. No flies on us. Beautiful wildflowers, majestic gums and dry dry creek beds. The Auswalk team consistently maintains a high standard on all their walks and I am always delighted with their choices of accommodation and the abundance and quantity of food available. I’ll be back.

We decided to go to the Flinders Ranges on an organised tour and were very pleased with the outcome. Having trained and enthusiastic guides made this more challenging and more fun than what we would have attempted on our own. The fully catered concept and cabin accommodation was perfect as was the modest size of the group. We saw the area from a number of vantage points and and the terrain was as spectacular as the post cards show. The food was great the company and guides great and we were able to see the Ranges in better depth and some places that I would not have expected to have visited. Thoroughly recommend Auswalks and we are now looking at other places to do this style of active holiday.

"Just like the three previous reviewers of Colin, Andrew, and Denise, who were amongst my fellow wonderful tour walkers, I also had a great time for all the reasons they have given, including praise of Katie and Bill. Some additional highlights for me included learning about ‘Goyders Line’ and watching the green vegetation change to an arid landscape as we progressed north through Goyders Line; the stay in Melrose, including my accommodation in a truck; the history of Quorn and Hawker, lunch at the summit of St. Marys Peak with one of those views of a life time, Rawnsley Park accommodation, and especially its Woolshed Restaurant with its great meals, friendly staff and comfortable sofas, which were great for a chat or read whilst sipping a quiet Bundy Rum and coke.
This was my third AUSWALK trek and I am looking forward to my fourth in a few months’ time"

Have always wanted to visit the Flinders Ranges and to get up close and chose a walking holiday with Auswalks. The organisation communication and attention to detail could not be faulted. The accommodation meals , the other hikers and the guides Katie and Bill could not have been better. Newbies and old hands were made welcome and everyone's needs and abilities catered for. I would recommend not only the Flinders Ranges as a destination but will be seriously considering doing more Auswalks holidays. The highlights were the scenery and the ability to to see the ranges from the air( an optional extra).

This was our second Auswalk, this time to the Flinders Ranges in South Australia. It was a great experience - the walking was interesting, and with more than one guide, it's good that they can sometimes offer harder and easier options. Comfortable accommodation, and great meals - you'll never go hungry.

The accommodation was comfortable, the food provided was very good (and plentiful) and the walks offered were excellent. Highly recommended.
Frequently Asked Questions
The Flinders Ranges sit approximately 500km north of Adelaide — around a five-hour drive. The walk starts and finishes at Rawnsley Park Station. Driving is by far the best way to get there, and the journey itself is worth taking slowly — the Southern Flinders Ranges and the Clare Valley wine region make excellent stops along the way. Public transport to the region is very limited and unreliable. Flying into Hawker or Rawnsley Park is possible, and private transfers from Port Augusta can be arranged, though these are more cost-effective for groups. If you're driving, your vehicle stays securely in the compound at Rawnsley Park for the duration of the walk.
Your main luggage is transported between accommodations while you walk — you carry only a daypack on the trail each day. The limit is 23kg per person. Please keep valuables, medication, and fragile items like cameras and laptops in your daypack rather than in your transferred bag. On some occasions, you may need to move your luggage to or from your room at the accommodation.
Yes, strongly. The Flinders is a reasonably long and tough walk, and building in a rest day is highly recommended. It also gives you time to simply sit in the landscape and let the scale of the place sink in — which is rather the point.
A good-sized daypack with padded shoulder straps and a hip belt. Key items include a quality waterproof jacket, warm fleece or jumper, sturdy walking boots with ankle support, gaiters (recommended to keep seeds, sand, and debris out of your boots), at least 2 litres of water (more in warmer conditions — water refill opportunities on the trail are limited), sun hat with a wide brim, sunscreen, sunglasses, toilet paper, your phone, and a personal first aid kit. Walking poles are also recommended — they make a real difference on the descent days and on uneven rocky terrain.
Synthetic or merino materials are best — avoid cotton, which gets damp from perspiration and takes a long time to dry. Shirts with collars and sleeves help prevent sunburn; zip-off trousers give you flexibility through the day. A warm hat is important for evenings and cold mornings. A quality waterproof and windproof jacket is essential regardless of the season — a Gore-Tex or similar breathable waterproof will serve you well for years. Proper hiking boots with good ankle support and chunky soles are strongly recommended. Break them in thoroughly before the trip.
Coverage is patchy and not available in all walk areas. Carry a fully charged phone and a backup power bank. If you need guaranteed communication at all points, consider hiring a satellite phone. In a genuine emergency, call 000 — this can connect even in areas without your carrier's coverage by roaming across any available network.
Auswalk can cater for specific dietary requirements — provide full details, including any allergies, when completing your booking form. The simpler your requirements, the easier it is to accommodate them, given the remote location. Please also remind your accommodation hosts of your needs on arrival.
Around six weeks before departure, you'll receive a detailed information pack including maps and a map case, an insulated lunch bag, expandable lunch box, reusable cutlery, a luggage tag, and Auswalk's comprehensive track notes — authored specifically for this walk with everything you need to navigate and get the most from each day.
