Overview

Explore the Dalmatian Coast from one of the world's great walled cities, using Dubrovnik as a base for a series of island walks through some of Croatia's most beautiful and unspoiled landscapes. The extraordinary island of Mljet is an early highlight, improbably green and lush, where two ancient saltwater lakes have drawn swimmers for centuries. Sleepy fishing villages, majestic clifftop fortresses and crumbling hilltop architecture await on the archetypal islands of Lopud and Korčula, each offering a distinct and deeply Croatian character. Few walks in Europe combine this level of history, natural beauty and Adriatic scenery in such a compact and rewarding package.

Where You'll Stay

Accommodation has been handpicked to reflect the character and history of the Dalmatian Coast, ranging from charming guesthouses and elegant boutique hotels to four and a half star properties on the upgraded walk. Each host is warm and welcoming, and premium properties come with added facilities including swimming pools and excellent in-house restaurants.

What You'll Eat

Breakfast is included every morning, a relaxed continental or buffet spread with tea, coffee and juice to set you up for the walk ahead. Dinner is yours to choose, and that's part of the adventure. In Konavle, try the wine tasting tavern right at your guesthouse. On Korcula, the hotel's own restaurant leans into Dalmatian flavours and local wines, a fitting reward after a day among the island's vineyards. In Dubrovnik, sit down at Agora for local cuisine on the terrace, or wander the car-free promenade and take your pick of the cafes and restaurants nearby. Wherever you land, our walk notes point you to the real local favourites, the places where Croatians themselves go for dinner. Alcohol isn't included with meals, but breakfast always comes with tea, coffee and juice.

More About This Trip

The walk starts and finishes in Dubrovnik, which has its own international airport with direct flights from many major cities. Airport transfers at both ends are included and arranged once we have your travel details.

This walk is available from 25 April to 10 October. May, June, September, and early October are the ideal times to visit, offering pleasant conditions, warm waters and thinner crowds in the old towns and on the islands. July and August are the warmest and sunniest months, but also the busiest, with Dubrovnik and Hvar in particular drawing large tourist numbers. Early autumn is a wonderful time to walk, with the sea at its warmest and a quieter, more relaxed atmosphere settling across the coast.

This is an easy to moderate walk with daily distances averaging around 13.5km and five to six hours of walking. The terrain is well-maintained throughout, following sometimes ancient paths via the most scenic routes possible, with only occasional small ascents. There is plenty of flexibility to extend or shorten each day's walking to suit your own pace.

You must hold adequate travel insurance for your trip, including cover for personal liability and accidental injury and illness. For all trips involving international travel, your policy must also include emergency medical treatment, evacuation and repatriation cover. We strongly recommend your policy also covers trip cancellation and curtailment, and loss of or damage to luggage.

A cancellation fee usually applies if you cancel after your booking is confirmed. Travel insurance with cancellation cover will generally cover this fee, so it's worth arranging your policy at the time of booking.

Full insurance requirements are set out in our booking terms and conditions.

A detailed information pack and itinerary will be sent to you around six weeks before departure, covering everything you need to know for a seamless experience. In the meantime, our team is always on hand to answer any questions.

The whole walk was very well organised. I do think you need to use the hiking app and the guide book. The Croatia walk was wonderful. It was well organised. The scenery in Croatia is beautiful.

Our island hopping walk in Croatia was a memorable experience. Visiting four beautiful islands (Hvar, Korcula, Mjlet and Lopud) on foot allowed us to appreciate their unique character, stunning scenery and some charming villages at a relaxed pace. We loved the quietness of travelling early in the season with fewer people on the trails and perfect walking temperatures. Walking is such rewarding way to experience a place giving time to soak up the landscape along with enjoying the local culture and hospitality in the evenings.

Totally exceeded my expectations. Self guided, self styled walk with Auswalk was challenging, fun and a must repeat somewhere else on there list of choices

AusWalk were fantastic to communicate with. With a couple of emails I was able to book a 7 day walk without having to research the ins and outs of where to go, what to do and how to arrange luggage transfers. We were able to see a lot more than just the main ports of the Croatian islands. Highly recommend.

We couldn't fault the company that Auswalk used for the Split to Dubrovnik walk. They were so hospitable and helpful. The guide who met us to give us our travel pack was able to give us a lot of information and made us feel really comfortable. We enjoyed our time at the Marco Polo Hotel in Korcula and wished we could have stayed longer on the island. We also appreciated that the hotel in Dubrovnik made us a breakfast pack as we were leaving very early on our departure date. The Croatian people are so relaxed and kind. We loved it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Your main luggage is transported between accommodations each day while you walk — it will be waiting for you when you arrive. You carry only a lightweight daypack on the trail. All luggage transfers and local transfers on and off the track are included in the package for all four itineraries.

The island hopping is one of the great pleasures of the Dalmatian walks. Public ferry tickets between the islands are included in the Split to Dubrovnik package — covering Split to Hvar, Hvar to Korčula, Korčula to Mljet, and Mljet to Dubrovnik. Ferries are a relaxed and scenic way to move between islands, and the Adriatic views from the deck are hard to beat. Auswalk's representatives on the ground are available to assist with any logistics.

The Dalmatian Coast walks are graded easy to moderate and are accessible to most fitness levels. Daily distances are manageable, with the island terrain involving gentle coastal paths, pine forest tracks, and village lanes rather than significant mountain climbs. The combination of walking, ferry travel, and town exploration makes for a varied and relaxed pace. A good base fitness is all that's needed.

Croatia has two distinct culinary identities. On the Dalmatian Coast, fresh seafood dominates — grilled fish, black risotto (crni rižot) made with cuttlefish ink, seafood pasta, and the ubiquitous peka (slow-cooked meat or octopus under an iron bell). The local wines, particularly Plavac Mali reds from the islands, are excellent. In Istria, the cuisine leans heavily Italian — hand-rolled pasta, prosciutto, and above all truffles, for which the Motovun forest region is internationally renowned. Istrian olive oil is some of the finest produced anywhere, regularly winning global awards. Pair everything with a glass of Malvazija, Istria's signature white wine.

Croatia uses the Euro (€), having adopted it in January 2023. Cards are widely accepted in hotels, restaurants, and shops throughout both regions, though it's worth carrying some cash for smaller establishments, markets, and ferry-side snack stops. ATMs are readily available in all the main towns.

Tipping is not mandatory in Croatia but is appreciated for good service — rounding up the bill or leaving 10% at a restaurant is common practice. It's particularly welcome at smaller family-run establishments where your custom makes a real difference.

Flag any allergies or dietary needs at the time of booking. Croatian cuisine is diverse and generally accommodating, with vegetarian options increasingly available, particularly in the more cosmopolitan towns. Smaller family-run restaurants in rural Istria may have more limited menus — let Auswalk know your requirements so they can advise on the best options along your specific route.
