Bags are transferred by boat each day, leaving walkers free to carry only a daypack.

Where You'll Stay

The accommodation on the Queen Charlotte Track is a highlight in its own right. Each lodge sits directly on the Sounds, with the water at your doorstep from the moment you arrive. Furneaux Lodge, Punga Cove and the Portage Hotel are among New Zealand's finest track-side properties, each combining quality rooms, excellent dining and genuine hospitality in one of the country's most beautiful settings. Your first and final night is spent at Edit Picton, right on the Picton waterfront.

What You'll Eat

A two-course à la carte dinner, cooked breakfast and packed walkers lunch are included on each day of the walk. On your first and last night in Picton, dinner is yours to explore — the town has plenty of excellent restaurants and is a great introduction to the region's celebrated food and wine scene.

More About This Trip

Picton is well connected, and there are several ways to reach it — each with its own appeal.

Flying to Blenheim is the quickest option, with a transfer straight to Picton. Alternatively, fly to Wellington and take the iconic Interislander ferry across the Cook Strait, arriving right alongside your hotel. For those with more time, the Coastal Pacific train from Christchurch is highly recommended — widely regarded as one of the great train journeys in the world, it hugs the coastline through Kaikoura before pulling into Picton just a few minutes' walk from your hotel. Driving from Christchurch also opens up the option of exploring the Kaikoura coast and Banks Peninsula along the way.

The Queen Charlotte Track is available from October through to April. Spring and autumn are ideal — the track is quieter, the light is beautiful and the temperatures are perfect for walking. January and February are warmer and popular, though peak season surcharges may apply. The track is not available June through August as the lodges close over winter.

The Queen Charlotte Track is well-graded and undulating, without any demanding climbs. Daily distances average around 17km, with time to push further if you have the energy, or simply linger and soak up the surroundings at each lodge. There is some elevation on certain days, as outlined in the itinerary, so it's worth keeping this in mind when preparing.

You must hold adequate travel insurance for your trip, including cover for personal liability and accidental injury and illness. For all trips involving international travel, your policy must also include emergency medical treatment, evacuation and repatriation cover. We strongly recommend your policy also covers trip cancellation and curtailment, and loss of or damage to luggage.

A cancellation fee usually applies if you cancel after your booking is confirmed. Travel insurance with cancellation cover will generally cover this fee, so it's worth arranging your policy at the time of booking.

The Edwin Fox Maritime Museum on the Picton waterfront preserves the hull of the Edwin Fox, one of the world's oldest surviving wooden ships, which transported convicts, troops and immigrants before ending its days in the Marlborough Sounds. Picton Museum in the town centre covers the maritime history of the Sounds and early European settlement of the region.

The walk was so well organised, very easy to follow both through the descriptions and sign posts along the way, and encompassed beautiful views and varied terrain, Accommodation at end of each day was delightful (especially the first 2 nights). There were a lot of kilometres to cover, but the suggested times were achievable, I walked this on my own, with no problems - so encourage any other solo walkers to do it too!

The Queen Charlotte Track was our second walk with Auswalk. We’ve thoroughly enjoyed both walks. We chose self guided and all the information we were given was very easy to interpret. I would definitely walk with Auswalk again.

We had the most wonderful experience from start to finish. The Accommodation was absolutely five star - Comfortable, beautifully presented, and perfectly located. One of the highlights was the stunning walk. the scenery was breathtaking as was the aqua blue ocean, wildlife. A memorable moment was being taken out to the ocean by tractor whilst onboard the water taxi - Such a unique experience. The team at Abel Tasman water taxi were fantastic, so friendly, fun and full of helpful information. The notes and instruction for our self-guided walk were spot on- easy to follow and very thoroughly prepared. Our guide for the half day kayaking adventure was also incredible, kind, patient and supportive. We would highly recommend this walk and location to anyone looking for a beautiful, well organised and truly memorable getaway.

Frequently Asked Questions

Getting around the Queen Charlotte Track is half the adventure. Most accommodations along the track are accessible only by water, so Beachcomber Cruises operates the water taxi transfers that connect each stage. On Day 1, a boat takes you from Picton out to Ship Cove to start the walk. From there, each day's luggage is transported by boat to your next accommodation while you walk. At the end of the track in Anakiwa, a water taxi brings you back to Picton. All water taxi transfers are included in the trip package.

Your main luggage travels by water taxi between accommodations each day — you only carry a daypack on the track. The limit is one bag per person up to 20kg. Make sure your bag is clearly labelled with your name and mobile number using the Auswalk luggage tags provided, plus the baggage tag from Beachcomber Cruises listing your accommodations. Luggage is typically waiting in your room when you arrive each evening. If you have any excess bags you don't need on the walk, these can be stored at the Beachcomber Cruises office in Picton.

Yes. Sections of the track pass through private land and require a Queen Charlotte Track Land Cooperative (Q.C.T.L.C.) pass. This is included in your Auswalk package, so there's no need to organise it separately.

Mobile reception on the Queen Charlotte Track is unreliable and varies considerably by location. Days 1 and 2 (Ship Cove to Camp Bay) have poor to no coverage in many sections. Coverage improves on Days 3 and 4 when the track follows ridgelines. Note that there is no mobile reception at Punga Cove Resort at all. Plan for limited connectivity throughout and carry your walk notes and maps as your primary navigation tools.

A waterproof daypack is essential. Key items include a quality waterproof rain jacket, warm layer, sun hat, sunscreen, sunglasses, at least 2 litres of water (more in hot weather — carry water purification tablets as backup for track water points), a packed lunch in your insulated bag, a first aid kit including two compression bandages, insect repellent for sandflies, and some cash. Swimwear and a quick-dry towel are worth packing too — the sounds are beautiful for a dip. Walking poles are not really necessary on this track.

The only way to shorten daily distances is to arrange a private water taxi at your own cost to transport you to a different point on the track. There are no road-based shortcuts. That said, the track is designed to be manageable for most fitness levels, and most days have natural rest points and café stops along the way.

Tipping is not customary in New Zealand and is not expected. If you've received exceptional service and wish to leave something, it will be appreciated, but there's absolutely no obligation.

Yes, solo walking is permitted on the Queen Charlotte Track. Solo walkers are required to sign a waiver form acknowledging the risks of walking alone before setting out.

Most dietary needs can be catered for with advance notice. Flag any allergies or requirements with Auswalk at the time of booking, and remind accommodation staff again at check-in. There are no grocery stores on the track, so there's no opportunity to supplement meals once you're walking — plan ahead in Picton if you have specific needs.

The Queen Charlotte Track passes through a pristine natural environment and your cooperation matters. Carry out all rubbish (your insulated lunch bag doubles as a rubbish bag). Never light fires. Don't pick wildflowers in national park areas. When toileting on the track, go well away from any watercourse and bury waste or carry it out. Conserve water at accommodations — it's a precious resource in this remote region.
