Fraser Island (K'gari) & Carnarvon Gorge - 7 Days
K'gari, the Indigenous name for Fraser Island, translates to paradise. The walk begins at Kingfisher Bay in the heart of the national park, moving through stunning landscapes including the crystal clear waters of Lake McKenzie. Pristine beaches and towering tropical rainforests reveal the island's extraordinary diversity at every turn.
From there, the journey continues to Carnarvon Gorge, Queensland's answer to the Kimberley. Towering cliffs, breathtaking views, and some of the most impressive Indigenous rock art sites in Australia make this one of the most diverse walking adventures the country has to offer.
Highlights
Day 1
We pick up and depart from the Vincent Crystalbrook Collection in Howard Smith Wharves, Brisbane CBD, near Fortitude Valley and New Farm at 7:30 am. It is very central, and there are walks close by as well as bars and restaurants galore, plus other hotel options. From here, we travel north to Fraser Island (K'gari), ensuring we stop on the way for a break. After our ferry ride over to the island, arriving at roughly 13:30, we check into our resort accommodation and enjoy a circuit walk in the beautiful Rainforest, so please come ready and dressed for walking. Before dinner, enjoy a welcome drink at the bar included in your package.

Six nights of comfortable en-suite accommodation are split between two remarkable destinations. On Fraser Island, three nights are spent at an excellent resort with well-appointed en-suite rooms. At Carnarvon Gorge, three nights are spent in top-level glamping tents at the wilderness lodge in the heart of the national park, each one with en-suite facilities and set in a tranquil bush setting.
All meals are included throughout this walk, with six continental breakfasts, six walker's lunches and six dinners provided across the seven days. Breakfasts and dinners are taken at your accommodation's restaurant, and the walker's lunches are provided daily at some of the most incredible locations this country has to offer. Each lunch varies but typically includes a high-protein salad, a roll or wrap, a muesli bar, something sweet, fresh fruit and trail mix. Please advise us of any food allergies or intolerances at the time of booking. If you have severe allergies, bringing some of your own snacks is recommended, as specialist ingredients can be harder to source in more remote parts of this walk.
Note: Drinks are not included with meals, with the exception of tea, coffee and juice served with breakfast.
The walk starts in Brisbane and finishes in Roma, in Queensland, Australia. Brisbane Airport (BNE) is well connected with domestic and international flights. Pick-up on the first day is at 8.00am from the Vincent Crystalbrook Collection at Howard Smith Wharves in the Brisbane CBD. Please come dressed and ready to walk on the first day.
The walk ends in Roma, with a drop-off at Roma Airport at approximately 1.00pm on the final day. Roma Airport (RMA) has regular domestic flights back to Brisbane for onward connections.
Departure dates for this guided group walk are set for May through August, the finest months for walking in Queensland. This period brings dry, settled weather with little chance of rain and clear blue skies. On Fraser Island, cooler temperatures make for comfortable walking through the forests and along the freshwater lakes. At Carnarvon Gorge, conditions are warm and sunny by day, though nights can drop close to zero; warm layers are essential. Summer is avoided, when heat and humidity make sustained walking uncomfortable on both destinations.
This walk is graded moderate. Daily walks average 16.6 kilometres with around 170 metres of ascent and descent, and a terrain difficulty rating of 5 out of 10. On K'gari, tracks run through forests on compacted sand with some beach walking. In Carnarvon Gorge, tracks are firm but uneven in places, with rock hopping over the creek and up to 36 crossings on longer days. Full-day walks can reach up to 21 kilometres, with shorter options available.
Sturdy walking boots with reliable grip are recommended. A regular training routine of three to four times per week is advisable preparation.
You must hold adequate travel insurance for your trip, including cover for personal liability and accidental injury and illness. For all trips involving international travel, your policy must also include emergency medical treatment, evacuation and repatriation cover. We strongly recommend your policy also covers trip cancellation and curtailment, and loss of or damage to luggage.
A cancellation fee usually applies if you cancel after your booking is confirmed. Travel insurance with cancellation cover will generally cover this fee, so it's worth arranging your policy at the time of booking.

A detailed information pack and itinerary will be sent to you around six weeks before departure, covering everything you need to know for a seamless experience. In the meantime, our team is always on hand to answer any questions.
When we transfer to K'gari ( Fraser Island), it is as foot passengers. We will be met by our accommodation representatives who will handle all luggage and transfer us to the resort. Due to this, luggage can weigh a maximum of 25 kg per piece of luggage.

I went on a guided walk and the two women guides on the walk were amazing. The walk itself was also a lovely way to see K’gari and Carnarvon Gorge. Accommodation was great as was the food but certainly the knowledge and passion shown by the guides really made the trip special. Really happy with our walk with Auswalk. 2 very different places K Gari and Carnaval Gorge … Each with their own highlights.. An island vs a gorge hundreds of kms away … You also got a taste of inland Qld. Showing us a beautiful part of Australia that not all of us could get too on our own .. plus the fabulous guides .. The hugely knowledgeable and lovely Michelle … And the ever dependable (& safe driving ) Georgie.
Michelle and Gorgie were both excellent guides and seemed to work well together. They shared a lot of interesting information about each location and obviously had a lot of experience and knowledge about wildlife, plants etc as well as local history.
The standard of accommodation and food is good and consistent. The time at Carnarvon Gorge was particularly enjoyable - the walks were variable and beautiful. Michelle’s in depth local knowledge contributed enormously to the overall experience. Both the Auswalk guides were terrific - very helpful and knowledgeable. They worked well together and contributed greatly to the enjoyment of the trip. The local guide on K’Gari was ok, but not as good as the Auswalk guides.
Both Guides were excellent as they were fair, professional and approachable. Michelle had a great knowledge of the Carnarvon Gorge and surrounding district and again Georgie provided reassurance when behind the wheel. This was my fifth walk with Auswalk and I have enjoyed each one. This is mainly because of the excellent guides and variety of locations. I enjoyed the Carnarvon Gorge due to the remoteness and I particularly liked the walk on the second day with Georgie.
The guides on this walk, Michelle and Georgie were excellent. They were organised, prepared and thoughtful. The locations were great, options offered, good accommodation and meals. Carnarvon Gorge was the highlight. The drive across from K’gari was long but it didn’t seem it. There were sufficient stops and I felt confident with their driving. Carnarvon Gorge was the highlight. The walks were varied and options offered. Michelle’s knowledge of and passion for the area certainly made the trek. Everything was outstanding there.
