Located just south of Naples, explore the dramatic Amalfi and Sorrento coastlines on foot. A region of immense beauty, spend a week exploring the pastel towns and delicious local seafood dishes that have made this stretch of coastline one of the most famous in the world.

Hike ancient staircases to the stylish hillside town of Ravello. Boasting some of the best views of the entire coastline, visit the exotic gardens of Villa Rufolo and Villa Cimbrone. Journey up into the foothills of Monti Latarri and walk Europe's most spectacular balcony path 'The Path of the Gods'.

Pass through steeply terraced vineyards and gardens of Pomodoro as you catch your first glimpse of the pink houses of Positano cascading down to the sea. Take a ferry to explore the Island of Capri and travel onwards directly to Sorrento.

Experience life in the 1st century as you walk the streets of the Roman city of Pompei. In the evening, soak up the atmosphere of beachfront restaurants and lively piazzas.

You will spend each night in small guesthouses and three-star hotels chosen for their setting, facilities, and history, all of them used to welcoming walkers. Many are family-run, so your hosts know the Amalfi Coast well and are happy to share the region's history with you over a chat. And if you need anything during your walk, you can always call us too.

Amalfi is a very popular destination, so now and then we may need to book you into another property of the same standard nearby. We will talk through any such options with you during booking.

What You'll Eat

Seven breakfasts are included. Lunch and dinner are left to you, so you can eat where the mood takes you. Grab lunch each day at the cafes and food stores you pass, and come evening you will find plenty of options for dinner. Your hosts keep a list of local recommendations and are glad to share it.

Let us know about any food allergies or intolerances when you book and we will pass the details on to your hosts. If your allergies are severe, it is worth packing a few of your own snacks to be safe.

More About This Trip

This walk starts in Amalfi and ends in Sorrento. The closest airport is the nearby airport of Naples.

Naples airport
Naples airport has bus connections through to Amalfi. If travelling between May and September you can pre-book a direct Pintour shuttle bus from Naples airport through to Amalfi (journey time is just over 2hrs). Alternatively, you can catch the Alibus from Naples airport to the Immacolatella (Porta Di Massa) and change for services to Amalfi (journey time around 3 hours). If you prefer, we can always organise a private transfer which is around a 1-hour journey.

By Train
From Napoli Centrale, change at Piazza Garibaldi for services to Via Nocera (40min journey). Here you can take a taxi (35min journey) to Amalfi.

Onward Travel From Sorrento
There are regular, direct airport shuttle services from Sorrento to Naples airport (Curreri Viaggi Services). The journey time is 1 hour. If you only wish to travel as far as Naples, you can take a direct train service from Sorrento train station through to Naples Porta Nolana train station.

For all train travel in Italy prices, timetables and ticket reservations can be made through The Trainline or Tren Italia.

Another useful generic planning tool for travel is Rome2Rio should you be travelling from, or to, other destinations.

This walk is available from 1 April to 31 October, but does not operate in July and August when heat and crowds are at their most intense. Spring is the golden season: orange blossom scents the lanes, wildflowers line the higher trails and the villages come to life after winter. June brings settled, sunny weather and long evenings. From September, the crowds thin and the heat eases, with the sea still warm and the coast at its most relaxed. October is particularly good for walking, with quieter paths and comfortable temperatures throughout. Pack a light waterproof whatever the month.

This walk is graded easy to moderate. Daily walks average 9.8 kilometres with around 385 metres of ascent and descent, and a terrain difficulty rating of 5 out of 10. The distances are short but the terrain demands attention. Many sections feature prolonged stone staircases, both ascending and descending, most with handrails though not always. Expect rocky mountain trails, forest paths, and the famous Path of the Gods, a balcony cliff path with some exposed sections. Those who suffer from severe vertigo may wish to take the ferry or bus between Amalfi and Positano on that day.

As is common throughout Italy, dedicated footpaths are not always available, so some road walking is unavoidable. Please remain mindful of other road users at all times. Sturdy walking boots are essential.

An exercise regime of two to three times per week, in addition to regular walking, is recommended in preparation. Daily walk notes, maps, and GPX tracks are provided.

You must hold adequate travel insurance for your trip, including cover for personal liability and accidental injury and illness. For all trips involving international travel, your policy must also include emergency medical treatment, evacuation and repatriation cover. We strongly recommend your policy also covers trip cancellation and curtailment, and loss of or damage to luggage.

A cancellation fee usually applies if you cancel after your booking is confirmed. Travel insurance with cancellation cover will generally cover this fee, so it's worth arranging your policy at the time of booking.

The accommodation was ok - The Albertina in Positano was incredible with the view. I hadn’t realised the walks would be quite as challenging as they were. We were well prepared and enjoyed it all. Liked the variety of walks. The hoteliers were so hospitable and made us so welcome. There were good instructions re places to get food and water etc. the app worked well and the booklets were a reassuring back up.

Everything you need to know about walking the Amalfi Coast

As some of the walks on this itinerary are loop walks you can explore the local towns or relax near the waterside or beachfront. On the days where you will be walking to the next town, it is not possible to travel with the luggage transfer service. The local bus and ferry services are an excellent way to reach your next destination. Your accommodation hosts will have up to date information and advice should you wish to travel to the next destination by local transport. There is plenty of information about options for the day in your daily walk notes and as always, you can call us at the office for any help during your walk should you need any assistance.

Positano The pink town of Positano is perfect for kicking back, relaxing. The town itself is worth exploring on foot. A glorious collection of terracotta buildings and artisan market stalls which all somehow cling onto the vertical rock Positano is built on. And of course, you can enjoy spotting the rich and famous moored just off shore in their luxury super yachts . Amalfi This historic town makes for an excellent base to further explore the nearby towns of Ravello, Maiori and Minori. You can always head down to the port and hangout in one of the many waterside restaurants.

Mobile coverage is generally good across the Amalfi region, though the mountainous terrain means signal can be patchy in places. Auswalk provides a walking app with GPX files that can be downloaded and viewed offline, making navigation straightforward even without reception. Always carry your phone — it is essential for emergencies and for contacting your accommodation if you are running late.

Your main luggage is transferred between accommodations each day, so you only need to carry a daypack on the trail. Bags must be clearly labelled with your name using the luggage tags provided, weigh no more than 20kg and measure no more than 60 x 50 x 40cm. Please do not attach additional items to your bag via handles or straps. Leave your luggage at reception on check-out and it will be waiting for you at your next accommodation.

The walks involve significant ascent and descent, often in warm conditions. Carry a minimum of two to three litres of water per person each day. Public water fountains are available in most villages and the water is generally safe to drink unless marked "Acqua Non Potabile."

Bus tickets on the Amalfi Coast must be purchased in advance at tobacco shops or newsagents — they cannot be bought from the driver. On trains, always check whether your ticket needs to be self-stamped before boarding, as failure to do so can result in fines of up to €200.

Yes. Please advise us of any dietary requirements at the time of booking so we can inform your accommodation hosts. On check-in, reconfirm your requirements directly with reception — particularly if vegetarian, as interpretations can vary. If you have severe allergies, bringing some of your own snacks is recommended.

Yes. While credit cards are widely accepted, carrying cash at all times is strongly advised. Local buses, smaller cafes and some shops may not accept cards. ATMs are available in most towns along the route. The currency throughout Italy is the Euro.

Yes. A local tourist tax is payable directly to your accommodation at check-in or check-out throughout the Amalfi region. The amount varies by property, typically between €1 and €12 per person per night. This is not included in your Auswalk package and must be paid in cash or by card on the spot.

Key items include waterproof walking shoes, a waterproof jacket and overtrousers, sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses, a water bottle of at least two to three litres and any personal medications. If you plan to swim on Capri, pack bathers and a towel. If prone to seasickness, bring non-drowsy medication for the ferry crossing. A full packing list will be included in your information pack sent six weeks before departure.
