Spring (March-May) – Second Best Option
The spring months of March, April, and May bring good hiking weather to central Vietnam, typically sunny but not too hot, with brief rainstorms. Northern Vietnam’s Sapa and Ha Giang areas work well during spring months from March to May with good conditions and flowering landscapes. This season offers comfortable temperatures for trekking before the summer heat arrives.
Winter (December-February) – Cold but Dry
The best time for trekking in Vietnam’s northern highlands runs from October to April, though temperatures can be uncomfortably cool at night in December and January. It tends to get pretty cold up in the hills in December and January, so bringing a jumper is essential. While conditions are dry and good for walking, the cold temperatures at higher elevations may be challenging.
Avoid: Summer (June-August)
Summer should be avoided as it is very wet and very hot — the worst conditions for trekking. Heavy rainfall during this period makes trails muddy, slippery, and potentially dangerous.
