So today we enjoy the mountains and, in doing so, build on your hiking fitness with a short walk taking the ridge track above Namche. There are good views over the Everest Base camp track. There are even better views of Everest on the lookout, and on the way down you visit the Sherpa Culture and Everest Mountaineering Museum. There’s time to explore Namche, do some shopping, or relax in one of the many restaurants (or at your hotel) and soak up the mountain atmosphere with the other trekkers and climbers.

Both deliver magnificent views once again over Everest, Ama Dablam, Makalu and Thamseku, and also Mnt Kongde. But the real highlight is the walk out to the Kongde Glacial lake, just below the Peak. Today revel in your achievement of reaching the summits of the Sumdur and Sherpa peaks, and top it off with an epic helicopter ride back to Kathmandu.  This breathtaking and unique journey takes you back down the mountains and via the foothills to Kathmandu – not only delivering astonishing views, but saving your knees walking downhill too!  After a magical hour or so in the sky, be transferred back to your 4-star hotel and enjoy the rest of the day at your leisure.

Accommodation: 4-star Hotel Mulberry
Meals: Breakfast

DAY 11
Contingency day Kathmandu

Even with the use of helicopters, the weather can, on very rare occasions,  make travel unpredictable.  In order to ensure your acclimitisation is not rushed, and/or risk missing an international flight with any unavoidable delays, we have factored in this contingency day.  It is most likely that this extra day will be spent in Kathmandu as a recovery day – you could indulge in meditation or yoga, a massage or simply relax around the infinity pool. Or all of the above!

Accommodation: 4-star Hotel Mulberry
Meals: Breakfast and farewell dinner at Mingma’s restaurant

DAY 12
Onward travel or more days in Kathmandu

The tour ends after breakfast, but depending on your onward travel arrangements, take a walk around Kathmandu or indulge yourself with a massage.  We can happily book more days for you in Kathmandu (at extra cost) if you would like to stay on.  Be transferred back to the airport – just let our team know what time you would like once you are back in Kathmandu.

ACCOMMODATION & DINING

OVERVIEW

During this tour, you will stay for 4 nights in a 4-star hotel in Kathmandu, and the highest quality 3-star accommodations available in the mountains.

All the accommodations are accustomed to welcoming trekkers and very well-equipped to make your stay comfortable regardless of the weather conditions. Typically, rooms are very comfortable with ensuites.  Continue to be well looked after as you ascend towards Kongde.  Kongde is one of the highest hotels on the planet and retains an exceptional standard of delivery given its location. Unlike many high-altitude accommodations on the traditional EBC trek, those on this trip will ensure a comfortable and warm stay.

Wifi is available at all accommodations thanks to a Starlink-type product. A pass needs to be bought daily which gives you enough GIGS to email and phone on WhatsApp.

Dining
You will be provided with 11 breakfasts and 9 dinners. Enjoy a welcome dinner at an authentic Nepalese restaurant on arrival and a farewell dinner at a beautiful open-air contemporary Nepalese restaurant on one of the last 2 nights. On the trek, you can order off the menus for breakfast and dinner. Lunch can be obtained as you walk and is part of the experience. The food is good throughout the trek.

You can of course bring snacks with you from Kathmandu or your home country. You can buy beer, soft drinks, chocolate and various snacks at almost all the accommodations.  Dahl Baht, the local delicacy, is recommended – at altitude, you’ll need to keep your calorie intake up.

If you have any food allergies or intolerances, please let us know at the time of booking so we can let your hosts know. Please note it is not always possible to accommodate all dietary requirements in the mountains. Should you have severe food allergies, it’s always worth bringing a few of your snacks with you, especially as the range of food can be limited here.

FITNESS GUIDE

It’s well worth investing some time and effort preparing for your walking holiday. The graph shows the average daily distance, elevation and terrain difficulty for your hike. The dotted line indicates the average across all our walks, which will give you a feel for how challenging your walk is compared to all – and the recommended type, and amount, of preparation needed.  Of course, you can adapt this according to your existing fitness levels and lifestyle.

The graph and the information below can be used in conjunction with the fitness guide to help you prepare for your walking adventure. Across all walks, average daily distance is 16.8km, average daily elevation is 448m, average terrain difficulty is 5/10.

ngraph

DISTANCE - BELOW AVERAGE

Distance is not a major consideration in your training program. However, you should still incorporate some long walks as it will increase your cardiovascular fitness. Altitude is an issue on this walk so you must do some training over the kilometres outlined above.

ELEVATION - ABOVE AVERAGE

Elevation training is a major consideration in your overall training program. You must include walks with serious hill climbs. If you do not have access to hills, it it essential to replicate the elevation level you will be undertaking in any way possible via a treadmill or stair climber. Prioritizing resistance training assumes heightened significance in this context, emphasizing the incorporation of stair climbing whenever feasible. Walking up and down stairs at work, at a local oval with a grandstand, or up and down small hills, boring as that sounds, is incredibly useful. Elevation is the chief walk killer, not distance, as it uses an entirely different set of muscles. If high altitude is a factor, incorporate sessions at a higher altitude to acclimatise your body to reduced oxygen levels ( this may not be possible). Ensure you can comfortably walk the average elevation per day displayed in the graph, at least one month before you undertake your hike.

MOUNTAINOUS / UNDULATING TERRAIN

As terrain associated with Mountain climbs is often somewhat uneven and or rocky balancing and core exercises are vital. Try to also include some form of elevation in more than 50% of your walking and prioritise resistance training, whilst incorporating stairs anytime you can. Walking up mountains or hills or up and down stairs at work, at a local oval with a grandstand or up and down small hills, boring as that sounds, is incredibly useful. Elevation is often the chief walk killer, not distance, as it uses an entirely different set of muscles. So concentrate on doing lots of squats and lunges to build your glute muscles.

GENERAL INFO

WHY TRAVEL WITH US - THE AUSWALK DIFFERENCE

Travel without stress or delays

  • Most visitors travel to Lukla via aeroplane, however, flights are often subject to weather-related delays or cancellations.  Hence we use helicopters which are far less susceptible to such issues, helping to deliver your trip as per the carefully planned itinerary. This saves up to 3 days of repeat walking and eliminates having to travel for 5 hours to Ramechhap for your Lukla flight
  • Returning from the peak via helicopter also eliminates walking all the same way back down to the trailhead in Lukla – your knees will be very grateful!
  • Built-in contingency day in case the weather delays departure from the mountains.  This rarely happens with helicopters but we know you wouldn’t want to miss your international flight in the unusual event that it did!
  • Priority use of our team’s 4 helicopters in case of an emergency

The best possible food and accommodation

  • Staying in a 4-star hotel in the quietest part of the bustling Thamel in Kathmandu, where you enjoy the Thamel area but are insulated from the bustle
  • Enjoying the best accommodation options available on the trek.  Note: accommodation levels vary and, where possible, rooms have ensuites.   Accommodations at a few high altitude locations are less luxurious but still comfortable
  • Since food plays a significant role in hiking at higher elevations, we strive to serve our guests fresh and healthy meals every time

Be well guided and looked after

  • Sufficient time to visit Kathmandu’s unmissable 7 World Heritage sites with our guided tour
  • Highly experienced fun-loving guides with fluent English
  • Guide to hiker ratio of 1 to 4 passengers so you will be very well looked after
  • Our professional safety-focused team on the ground ensure the best possible experience

We support the region and the environment

  • We support the Himalayan Sherpa Hospital at Phakding through the Himalayan Sherpa Foundation
  • We support the organization KEEP (Kathmandu Environmental Education Project). KEEP provides valuable training programs for guides, including language training, map reading, and a porter welfare program
  • We offset our carbon emissions, raise money and donate to Odonata, an environmental charity committed to supporting biodiversity
  • Auswalk has earned Advanced Eco Tourism Certification

AVAILABILITY

This walk is available in March, April, May, September, October and November.

Please contact us if the departure dates displayed do not suit you as we can easily arrange another more suitable date for your group.

If you have your own small group, we can lock away your departure date from your group at 4 or more pax.

THE WALKING

Challenging. This track is rated one rating less than our other Everest region treks because we can really take our time ascending and avoid some of the walking at altitude with the crowds, whilst not sacrificing any of the experience.

Tracks and trails on this tour will have prolonged ascents, but virtually no descent, along mainly well-travelled tracks. There are a few long sections of elevation and some sections of steps.  An average of 9km, 600m ascent each day. Having an active lifestyle and preparing or being an experienced walker will make the journey more enjoyable. Altitude is the biggest challenge, but rest assured:  we have 2 acclimatisation days and take extra care not to ascend too quickly.

Your local guide is an expert mountaineer with in-depth knowledge of the track.

HOW TO GET THERE AND AWAY

This walk starts and ends at Kathmandu Airport.

Kathmandu Airport
The trip starts with a transfer from Kathmandu Airport to your accommodation. You will be met at the airport by one of our representatives so please let us know your travel plans so we can arrange your private transfer. If you are already in Nepal then the walk starts at your hotel.

At the end of the trip, we transfer you back to the airport for your international flight.

A useful planning tool for travel is Rome2Rio should you be travelling from or to other destinations.

LUGGAGE

Each morning it will be up to you to pack your bag and place your luggage outside your room. Your guide will let you know what to do. Bags must be less than 15kg and be Soft Bags (i.e. not hard cases).

Importantly, any excess kilos can be stored at the hotel in Kathmandu.

INSURANCE

We require that you have adequate travel insurance against potential losses, damage or injury, including cancellation costs and loss of luggage.

For all trips that require international travel, you must have purchased travel insurance that also includes medical evacuation coverage.

We also charge a cancellation fee if you cancel your walking holiday after we have confirmed it to cover costs incurred by our suppliers and in the office.  See the FAQ section for more information.

POWER SUPPLY

The Everest region is powered by hydro electricity.  In peak season, supply is limited and power outages may occur so we advise bringing a powerbank/ back up batteries for your phones, cameras and electronics.

Hot showers are mostly powered by solar panels or a gas-fired water heater.  On very rare occasions hot showers may not be available.

Today is our first challenging ascent on the EBC track.  It comes with some very special views, including our first glimpse of Everest and Lhotse (the fourth highest mountain in the world, at 8516m).  Hike to the stunning town of Namche and enjoy the authentic and largest Sherpa mountain town in the region. There are an array of shops selling authentic handmade Nepalese handicrafts and jewellery so try and pack light if you want to indulge!   You’ll stay in a good quality 3-star hotel for 2 nights, with an amazing restaurant looking over the mountains, including Mnt Kondge.

Distance: 11km/5hrs
Elevation Gain/Loss: 832m
Accommodation: 3-star hotel with ensuites
Meals: Breakfast & Dinner

DAY 5
Namche hike and acclimitisation day

It’s essential to take acclimatisation days in your quest to reach Everest Base Camp to help avoid getting altitude sickness.

Distance: 7km/3.5hrs
Elevation Gain/Loss: 200/-200m
Accommodation: 3-star hotel with ensuites
Meals: Breakfast & Dinner

DAY 6
Trek to Thame (3900m)

This is a captivating day walking over Nangpa La Pass, the gateway to Tibet.  The track takes you to the village of Thamo, catching great views of Cho Oyu Peak (8180m).  We cross over the Bhote Khosi River and then arrive in the picturesque village of Thame where we can immerse ourselves once again in the rich cultural heritage of the region.

Distance: 9.5km/5hrs
Elevation Gain/Loss: 460m
Accommodation: Comfortable lodge
Meals: Breakfast & Dinner

DAY 7
Summit Sumdur Peak (5229m) and acclimitisation day

Today’s hike up to the summit of Sumdur Peak is extraordinary – an exhilarating experience with breathtaking vistas. As you venture up the mountain the landscape unfurls before your eyes, revealing an awe-inspiring panorama like no other in the Everest region.  There are views over almost all of the Khumbu region, including Everest, Lhotse and Ama Dablam. This hike is rated by the Sherpa community as being one of the best in the whole region because of its grandeur.

Distance: 8km/6hrs
Elevation Gain/Loss: 1329m/-1329m
Accommodation:  Comfortable lodge
Meals: Breakfast & Dinner

DAY 8
Trek to Kongde (4200m)

On today’s incredible walk, we are almost guaranteed to have the track to ourselves.  Soak up the incredible, bucket-list views of Everest, Lhotse, Cho Oyu, Gyjungkhang, and so on!  We make our way to the highly reputed Kongde Hotel where we stay, one of the highest hotels on the planet and one of the best in the Everest region. Savour a drink on the magnificent terrace and enjoy what is one of the best vistas from any hotel in the world.

DAY 9
Summit Sherpa Peak (5050m)

If you thought yesterday was the ‘best day ever’ you’re in for a treat today, with another stunning hike!  Today we either trek to Pharak Peak (4900m) or Sherpa Peak depending on the conditions. Both deliver magnificent views once again over Everest, Ama Dablam, Makalu and Thamseku, and also Mnt Kongde. But the real highlight is the walk out to the Kongde Glacial lake, just below the Peak. The reflection of the mountains on the lake is one of the most iconic views in the Himalayas.

Distance: 8km / 5-6 hrs
Elevation Gain/Loss: 800m
Accommodation: Comfortable lodge
Meals: Breakfast & Dinner

DAY 10
Helicopter ride back to Kathmandu

Meals: Breakfast

Accommodation & Dining
