OVERVIEW

Slow Living & Unforgettable Taste

The volcanoes are the star of the show, obviously. But so is the sea; think endless shades of green, turquoise, and brilliant blues, all dramatically contrasting with the blazing white of the fishing villages. Then, throw in the jet-black lava of the Aeolian Islands archipelago. Most of those islands are actually active volcanoes, and you’re going to get up close. And of course, there’s Mount Etna. This overpowering giant, all 3,323 meters of it, is always watching. Up on its flanks, you’ll see ancient lava flows where the Mediterranean plants are absolutely thriving, super green and vigorous. But those are cut through by the newer, dark, barren lava trails that score the mountainsides.

The rugged cliffs and sharp mountain crests give you incredible panoramas. You’ll also spot tiny villages built like eagles’ nests clinging to the slopes, looking down on a seemingly endless tapestry of cultivated fields in every shade of green, yellow, and brown. It’s absolutely breathtaking. In Sicily, life is lived at a much more relaxed pace. People follow the rhythm of the seasons and stick to those fascinating old rituals and traditions. It can be a simple life, but you know what makes it sunny? The absolutely superb Sicilian food and wine. They load up on fresh vegetables bursting with vivid colour, making every meal a celebration.

Highlights

  • Ascend the world-renowned Mount Etna, a UNESCO World Heritage site
  • Island hop through the picturesque Aeolian archipelago
  • Explore Lipari’s bustling nightlife and ancient Roman remains
  • Experience the thrill of climbing active volcanoes: Mt. Vulcano, Mt. Stromboli, and Mt. Etna
  • Relax on stunning beaches while enjoying magnificent views
  • Savour exquisite local food and wine crafted from fresh ingredients
  • Stay in Taormina, the timeless “gem” of Sicily, with its beautiful coastal views and charming historic centre.

Arrive in Lipari

Welcome to Sicily! Upon arrival at Catania Airport, you’ll embark on a scenic journey to the charming island of Lipari. Travel by bus or train to Milazzo or Messina, then catch a hydrofoil to Lipari, where you’ll settle into your cozy hotel for the next four nights. Known as the liveliest centre of the Aeolian Islands, Lipari invites you to explore its old fortress, wander through the bustling fish market, or enjoy local music in a delightful bistro by Marina Vecchia. It is also possible to pre-book a private transfer from Catania airport to Milazzo/Messina.

Lipari – La Guardia

Over the next few days, you’ll have the freedom to choose from a variety of walks and excursions, completing them in any order you prefer. Three walks are located on Lipari Island itself. The remaining two are located on the islands of Vulcano, Salina, and Panarea, all of which are accessible by ferry from Lipari.

Lipari Island: The southern tip and Mt. Guardia: This diverse walk on southern Lipari offers views of Vulcano Island and begins and ends at the Port. Initially, you’ll ascend to an astronomical observatory, where you can take in the sights of Vulcano and the dramatic “faraglioni” cliffs. Afterwards, you’ll descend into Lipari’s historic old town, rich with historical and artistic treasures.

DAY 3
Exploring Lipari: Loop Walks

WALK A – Lipari to Quattropani: After breakfast, you’ll hop on the local bus from Lipari town and head up to Quattropani, that’s the kick-off point for a cracker of a walk along the island’s western coast. This is the wildest part of Lipari, a real plunge into the wilderness, mate! You’ll be treated to some magnificent views of the land and the sea that’ll knock your socks off.

The journey leads you right to the San Calogero thermal baths. Get this: they’re thought to be the oldest spa in the whole Mediterranean, dating back to the Mycenaean period. Pretty incredible history to soak up (literally, if you like!). From there, it’s a lovely walk back towards Lipari town, passing through quaint villages and even a few natural fumaroles (those cool little steam vents). It’s a fantastic way to see the island’s true heart!

Walking: 14 km or 9 km / 5 or 4 hrs
Elevation: +586 m or 255 m / -950 m or 581 m

WALK B – Acqualcalda to Canneto: Catch a local bus from Lipari to Acquacalda, where your walk begins, taking you from one beach to another through the lush Mediterranean scrub. Along the way, you’ll discover pumice caves and breathtaking views of the surrounding islands. Be sure to pause at the panoramic viewpoint (346m) to fully appreciate the scenery before heading down to Canneto, Lipari’s main beach. Here, you can enjoy a refreshing swim before taking the local bus back to Lipari.

Walking: 5 km / 2 hrs
Elevation: +3500 m / -3500 m

Accommodation: Family-run hotel in Lipari

DAY 4
Salina Island and or Panarea Island

WALK A – Panarea is our furthest stop from Lipari by hydrofoil, and trust me, it’s worth the quick trip. Once you’re there, we’ve got a fantastic walk planned that takes you right around the island, following the high ridge of the ancient volcano. The payoff? Absolutely incredible views over the entire Aeolian archipelago! You’ll feel like you’re on top of the world. And here’s a little bonus: along the way, you can easily take a quick detour to check out the island’s famous prehistoric village. It’s a fascinating peek into the past and a great little side trip.

Walking: 7 km / 3 hrs
Meals:
Breakfast

WALK B – Just a short ferry ride from Lipari to Salina Island, where you can catch a bus to Semaforo of Pollara, an old lighthouse offering panoramic views. The trail descends through rugged cliffs and lush Mediterranean vegetation, passing through the charming village of Pollara and providing breathtaking views of the Tyrrhenian Sea and neighbouring Aeolian Islands along Salina’s dramatic west coast, with a scenic descent to Rinella, a quaint fishing village featuring a black sand beach and a picturesque harbour.

DAY 5
Stromboli Island: A Volcanic Encounter

We’ve got a fantastic circular walk planned for you today! It’s super accessible, open to everyone and generally available year-round. This walk will take you up to 272 meters above sea level, and trust me, it’s worth the easy climb. Why? From the top, you get an incredible view over the volcanic lava flow field known as the “Sciara di Fuoco.”

Walking: 9 km / 3 hrs
Elevation: +425 m / -425 m

DAY 6
Free Day in Taormina

Today, you’ll be zipping from Stromboli to Milazzo on a fast hydrofoil—a great way to take in those coastal views! From there, it’s a comfortable ride by train or bus to your next spectacular destination: Taormina.

The whole afternoon is yours to simply soak up the vibe in this beautiful and buzzing town. You’ll definitely want to check out the Cathedral and, of course, the stunning ancient Greek Theatre. Imagine a structure built nearly 2,300 years ago, still wonderfully preserved and offering jaw-dropping views.

Treat yourself to a frozen “granita,” a regional specialty. It’s like a delicious, icy sorbet, but better, and you get to enjoy it with a tasty brioche. It’s the perfect little break before you dive back into exploring.

Meals: Breakfast
Accommodation: Modern hotel in Taormina

DAY 7
Guided Tour of Mount Etna

After a solid breakfast, we’ll whisk you away to Piano Provenzano for the main event. Walk with a guide on a guided walk up the big giant itself, the majestic Mount Etna. This isn’t just any old trek. You’ll walk right through lush, vibrant vegetation that thrives despite the volcano, crossing over fascinating old and new lava flows. We’ll even head inside a lava flow cave carved right into the mountain.

Enjoy a tasty lunch at a local winery, and afterwards, visit the stunning Alcantara Gorge. Prepare to be amazed by the strange, geometric rock shapes formed eons ago when a scorching lava flow crashed directly into a freezing cold river. It’s a truly unique natural wonder. We’ll have you back in Taormina around 6:30 pm, giving you plenty of time to enjoy your final evening in town.

FITNESS GUIDE

It’s well worth investing some time and effort preparing for your walking holiday. The graph shows the average daily distance, elevation and terrain difficulty for your hike. The dotted line indicates the average across all our walks, which will give you a feel for how challenging your walk is compared to all – and the recommended type, and amount, of preparation needed.  Of course, you can adapt this according to your existing fitness levels and lifestyle.

The graph and the information below can be used in conjunction with the fitness guide to help you prepare for your walking adventure. Across all walks, average daily distance is 16.8km, average daily elevation is 448m, average terrain difficulty is 5/10.

ngraph

DISTANCE - BELOW AVERAGE

Distance is not a major consideration in your training program. However, you should still incorporate some long walks as it will increase your cardiovascular fitness.

ELEVATION - ABOVE AVERAGE

Elevation training is a major consideration in your overall training program. You must include walks with serious hill climbs. If you do not have access to hills, it it essential to replicate the elevation level you will be undertaking in any way possible via a treadmill or stair climber. Prioritizing resistance training assumes heightened significance in this context, emphasizing the incorporation of stair climbing whenever feasible. Walking up and down stairs at work, at a local oval with a grandstand, or up and down small hills, boring as that sounds, is incredibly useful. Elevation is the chief walk killer, not distance, as it uses an entirely different set of muscles. If high altitude is a factor, incorporate sessions at a higher altitude to acclimatise your body to reduced oxygen levels ( this may not be possible). Ensure you can comfortably walk the average elevation per day displayed in the graph, at least one month before you undertake your hike.

TERRAIN - UNEVEN

UNEVEN TERRAIN:

Preparation for hiking on uneven terrain demands a nuanced blend of physical and mental readiness. Commence your regimen with balance-enhancing exercises, such as one-legged stands and stability ball workouts, laying a foundational groundwork for stability and coordination. Strengthening the lower body is pivotal, achieved through the incorporation of squats, lunges, and step-ups to enhance both stability and power. Gradually increase the complexity of the terrain on which you walk, moving from gravel paths to rocky trails. Cultivate mindfulness during your practice, directing focused attention to both your immediate surroundings and precise foot placement. The importance of suitable footwear cannot be overstated; prioritise options that offer robust support and reliable grip to navigate varying terrains with confidence. Build endurance through consistent hikes, progressively increasing distance and difficulty.

MOUNTAINOUS / UNDULATING TERRAIN

As terrain associated with mountain climbs is often somewhat uneven and rocky, balancing and core exercises are vital. Try to also include some form of elevation in more than 50% of your walking and prioritise resistance training, whilst incorporating stairs anytime you can. Walking up mountains or hills, up and down stairs at work, or up and down at a local oval with a grandstand is incredibly useful. Elevation is often where walkers encounter problems not distance, as it uses an entirely different set of muscles to everyday flat walking. Concentrate on doing lots of squats and lunges to build your glute muscles.

A note on our self-guided adventures

Self-guided walking or cycling requires individuals to use problem-solving skills, be adaptable, and detail-oriented. You should be comfortable in following route notes and have a good sense of direction (or be willing to develop this!).

Like any other trip, self-guided trips require a certain level of tolerance for the unexpected; however, a well-planned and methodical approach helps avert potential problems.

AVAILABILITY

We offer this walk from April to October, as it can get quite cold in the depths of winter, and many accommodations close their doors at this time as well.

INSURANCE

We require that you have adequate travel insurance to cover potential losses, damage, or injury, including cancellation costs and loss of luggage.

You must have purchased travel insurance for all trips that require international travel, including coverage for medical evacuation.

We also charge a cancellation fee if you cancel your walking holiday after we have confirmed it to cover costs incurred by our suppliers and in the office.  See the FAQ section for more information.

INFORMATION PACK

For more than 30 years, we have taken pride in providing seamlessly organised walking holidays, but we know you’ll have many more questions even with that in mind. You will receive a detailed information pack and itinerary approximately six weeks before departure outlining all the fine details and much more.

Accommodation & Dining

ACCOMMODATION & DINING

OVERVIEW

We’ve handpicked comfortable 3-star hotels and B&Bs in the larger towns for your stay. While in the villages and countryside, you’ll stay in cozy, welcoming agriturismos (family-run farm stays) and charming B&Bs.

All rooms have private bathrooms, and you’ll start each day with a classic Italian breakfast. Your trip is on a bed-and-breakfast basis only, except in Cammarata. This is because on the journey, you’ll have even more choices and opportunities to spoil yourself with incredible local dishes and sip various regional wines.

Alternative Accommodation

We do our best to avoid changes to accommodations. However, during peak season, there’s a possibility that you may stay in accommodations that differ from those listed in the itinerary, which could result in minor adjustments to the start or end of your walking routes. Please verify your confirmed accommodation against the itinerary and note any discrepancies. If not, you must remain attentive to the route details from start to finish.

In cases of alternative accommodation, we will strive to maintain the same level of comfort and quality. We will make every effort to keep your accommodation in the same towns and villages to avoid significant route changes. However, this is not always possible.

Fitness Guide

Luggage transfer is inclusive and arranged by the accommodation or a local taxi company.

Please use our bag tag to mark all your belongings clearly with your name. Labelling your belongings prevents mix-ups, delays, and the risk of losing items. Ask the accommodation owner where you should leave your bags in the morning.

Bags should be ready and at the reception area or storage room by 9:00 AM.

When you travel by public transport, please always take your luggage with you.
