OVERVIEW

Our view is to take your time to explore Tasmania and explore it at your own pace. If you don’t have the time then the following destinations are our all-time favourites.
Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park is one of the standout parks amongst a plethora of parks that vie for the top of the walking charts.
The Tasman Peninsula with its Three Capes Track and a great selection of other walks is another walking mecca for hikers from all around the world. Cape Huay, Cape Pillar, and Cape Roual are the iconic walks, but Mount Brown and Waterfall Bay are also not to be missed.
Bay of Fires is a gentle walk and incorporates great coastal. Clear azure seas splashed with red lichen on the granite-strewn coast is its hallmark.
Freycinet with its towering Mount Amos and gorgeous Wine Glass Bay is also not to be missed.
The Tarkine is the most underrated of all the locations and well worth exploring. It is a vast area and has some of the oldest forests on the planet as well as the gorgeous Pieman River.
There are a tonne of honourable mentions, Mount Anne, Liffey Falls, Mount Murchison, and Philosophers Falls, the list is endless.
Tougher walks through wilderness areas are well rated like the South West Track and the Western Arthur Range, but they come with a caveat. That is you will need to be prepared from a fitness level and also from an equipment level. The tracks are also not great, and you will need to carry everything.

Climate & when to walk

WEATHER

See the Bureau of Meteorology for information about temperatures and rainfall ahead of time to ensure proper clothing. Spring and autumn are a perfect time to walk on the Tasman Peninsula. Summer can be a little warmer, however, the average temperature is only 18 degrees. Winter is often written off as a time not to visit Tasmania, let alone walk because of the rain. However, if you look at the mean average rainfall it isn’t that much more than in summer. The average temperature in winter does however fall to 11 degrees so come prepared with warm clothes and good rain gear (realistically year-round). See the gear advice section in FAQ’s for more information. We have used Hobart as our standard, it will be somewhat colder at Cradle Mountain so please check if you are going anywhere near mountains.

Cradle Mountain so please chack there.
