FITNESS GUIDE

It’s well worth investing some time and effort preparing for your walking holiday. The graph shows the average daily distance, elevation and terrain difficulty for your hike. The dotted line indicates the average across all our walks, which will give you a feel for how challenging your walk is compared to all – and the recommended type, and amount, of preparation needed.  Of course, you can adapt this according to your existing fitness levels and lifestyle.

The graph and the information below can be used in conjunction with the fitness guide to help you prepare for your walking adventure. Across all walks, average daily distance is 16.8km, average daily elevation is 448m, average terrain difficulty is 5/10.

ngraph

DISTANCE - BELOW AVERAGE

Distance is not a major consideration in your training program. However, you should still incorporate some long walks as it will increase your cardiovascular fitness.

ELEVATION - ~AVERAGE

Elevation training should be a consideration in your overall training program.

Try to include some form of elevation in more than 40% of your walking and prioritise resistance training, whilst incorporating stairs anytime you can. Walking up and down stairs at work, at a local oval with a grandstand or up and down small hills is incredibly useful. Elevation is often where walkers encounter problems, opposed to distance, as it uses an entirely different set of muscles to everyday flat walking.

Ensure you can comfortably walk the average elevation per day displayed in the graph, at least one month before you undertake your hike.

TERRAIN

ROCKY TERRAIN

Whilst preparing for walking on rocky terrain, you must focus on the development of balance, strength, and agility.

Integrate targeted strength exercises, such as lunges, squats, and step-ups, to strengthen your leg muscles, with a particular emphasis on improving stability on uneven surfaces. Balancing exercises are essential. Undertake core strength activity, coupled with exercises such as planks and Russian twists to enhance balance. As you progress, include hikes on progressively rougher terrain if you can. Additionally, the appropriate footwear with good ankle support and tread for grip are essential. Stay mindful, watch your step, and use trekking poles for added stability.

MOUNTAINOUS / UNDULATING TERRAIN

As terrain associated with mountain climbs is often somewhat uneven and rocky, balancing and core exercises are vital.

Try to also include some form of elevation in more than 50% of your walking and prioritise resistance training, whilst incorporating stairs anytime you can. Walking up mountains or hills, up and down stairs at work, or up and down at a local oval with a grandstand is incredibly useful. Elevation is often where walkers encounter problems not distance, as it uses an entirely different set of muscles to everyday flat walking. Concentrate on doing lots of squats and lunges to build your glute muscles.

GENERAL INFO

This is a circuit trip starting and finishing in Melbourne. The Grampians’ walks and tracks vary a lot. Many are rough and rocky underfoot and on these tracks, we will walk slower and cover less distance than on other trips.

Pre and post-tour accommodation: Our pick-up location for this trip is the Mercure Southbank, 9 Riverside Quay, Southbank, Melbourne with an early departure of 8:00 am (we request you be there by 7.45 am). It would be beneficial to stay near here as it is near everything. There are many options, however, we can also recommend the nearby Quay West Suites or the DoubleTree By Hilton Hotel Melbourne. The trip finishes in Melbourne around 6.00pm to 7.00 pm on the last day.

For what to bring please refer to Gear Advice on our FAQ section.

WEATHER

Our choice for this trip is spring time as the wildflowers are at their best and the weather is usually warm and sunny.

See the Bureau of Meteorology for information about temperatures and rainfall ahead of time to ensure proper clothing.

THE WALKING

The walks on this trip are some of the most spectacular and of the highest quality in Australia. Like all things of high quality, there’s a cost to pay, and in this case, it is a bit of energy. The walks on this trip are moderate to challenging and include some substantial climbs. The tracks range in quality, but most are reasonably good underfoot. There are no easy walks available on this walk as we want everyone to enjoy this magnificent destination.

The tracks vary in quality, but all are easily passable. There are some opportunities for more eager walkers to really challenge themselves, the main walks are all moderate, but on the Mnt Abrupt and Mount Rosea days, where the grading is challenging, due to some challenging sections

INSURANCE

We require that you have adequate travel insurance against potential losses, damage or injury, including cancellation costs and loss of luggage.

For all trips that require international travel, you must have purchased travel insurance that also includes medical evacuation coverage.

We also charge a cancellation fee if you cancel your walking holiday after we have confirmed it to cover costs incurred from our suppliers and in the office.  See the FAQ section for more information.

INFORMATION PACK

For nearly 30 years we have taken pride in providing seamlessly organised walking holidays, but we know, even with that in mind, that you’ll have many more questions. You will receive a very detailed information pack and itinerary approximately 6 weeks out from departure outlining all the fine detail and much more.

Walk was as expected. Well organized, great walks, great guides. great accommodation & overly generous meals ! Good for big eaters. Felt like I was forever eating ! Temptation to not over eat was very difficult (ha ha). Excellent variety & quantity of walk munchies but thought a bit more variety on lunches would have been good ? We had 4 days of rolls & 2 days of wraps. Maybe 2 days each of rolls, wraps & maybe a salad for variety ? Accommodation at the Royal Mail was extremely enjoyed along with the dinner there and it was a great way to finish off the week. Thank you 🙂 Guides very patient, caring, helpful & informative. Would go out of their way to meet any requests. Couldn’t have asked for better guides :). Although I thoroughly enjoyed the Mt William walk, it was not in everyone’s comfort zone and/or ability ? The short option for them was great but thought maybe a walk or even e-bike to the top of Mt William could have been added to that short walk option as the view up there was quite spectacular and I was sorry some of our group didn’t get the opportunity to experience it.

Fabulous Auswalk guides who really understood us & were flexible & generous – together with the magnificent Grampians – made our 7-day hike a dream. It was a challenging walk though, training recommended! A great sense of achievement afterwards & memories for ever. Thanks Bec, Eric & Auswalk!

I’ve just returned from a fantastic 7 day guided walk in the Grampians. The scenery was stunning. There was a good balance of easy walking and tough climbing. The AusWalk guides, Bec and Chris, were excellent. It was good to return to a warm shower and great food at the end of the day.

Guides worked well together and were great company. They understood the walks and honestly communicated the nature of each day. I enjoyed each walk and even though some days were quite challenging I enjoyed the challenge.

My overall comment is that I didn’t expect to enjoy the trip as much as I did. Lovely people on the walk, accommodation and food was better than expected. The guides were just the best, could not fault them at all. They made the trip exceptional really.

Concentrate on doing lots of squats and lunges to build your glute muscles.

General Info

We also charge a cancellation fee if you cancel your walking holiday after we have confirmed it to cover costs incurred from our suppliers and in the office.  See the FAQ section for more information.

I loved walking in the Grampians and the walks that we did were a good selection. Both Rebecca and Neil were friendly, well organised, informative, helpful and made it a great walk.

Walks were stunning, challenging and varied! Guides worked really well together and seamlessly managed all that was needed. Great experience!!
