FITNESS GUIDE

It’s well worth investing some time and effort preparing for your walking holiday. The graph shows the average daily distance, elevation and terrain difficulty for your hike. The dotted line indicates the average across all our walks, which will give you a feel for how challenging your walk is compared to all – and the recommended type, and amount, of preparation needed.  Of course, you can adapt this according to your existing fitness levels and lifestyle.

The graph and the information below can be used in conjunction with the fitness guide to help you prepare for your walking adventure. Across all walks, average daily distance is 16.8km, average daily elevation is 448m, average terrain difficulty is 5/10.

ngraph

DISTANCE - ~AVERAGE

Distance training should be a consideration in your overall training program, so take every opportunity you can to walk. As you progress, incorporate longer walks into your training plan.

Schedule one or two long walks each week, gradually increasing the distance until you can comfortably cover 16km in a single day. Also include walks on consecutive days to help your body adapt to the demands of walking for multiple days in a row.

Ensure you can comfortably walk the average distance per day displayed in the graph, at least one month before you undertake your hike.

ELEVATION - ~AVERAGE

Elevation training should be a consideration in your overall training program.

Try to include some form of elevation in more than 40% of your walking and prioritise resistance training, whilst incorporating stairs anytime you can. Walking up and down stairs at work, at a local oval with a grandstand or up and down small hills is incredibly useful. Elevation is often where walkers encounter problems, opposed to distance, as it uses an entirely different set of muscles to everyday flat walking.

Ensure you can comfortably walk the average elevation per day displayed in the graph, at least one month before you undertake your hike.

TERRAIN

MOUNTAINOUS / UNDULATING TERRAIN

As terrain associated with mountain climbs is often somewhat uneven and rocky, balancing and core exercises are vital.

Try to also include some form of elevation in more than 50% of your walking and prioritise resistance training, whilst incorporating stairs anytime you can. Walking up mountains or hills, up and down stairs at work, or up and down at a local oval with a grandstand is incredibly useful. Elevation is often where walkers encounter problems not distance, as it uses an entirely different set of muscles to everyday flat walking. Concentrate on doing lots of squats and lunges to build your glute muscles.

UNEVEN TERRAIN

Preparation for hiking on uneven terrain demands a blend of physical and mental readiness.

Begin with balance-enhancing exercises, such as one-legged stands and stability ball workouts, laying a groundwork for stability and coordination. Strengthening the lower body is especially important, achieved through the incorporation of squats, lunges, and step-ups. Gradually increase the complexity of the terrain on which you walk, moving from gravel paths to rocky trails. Cultivate mindfulness during your practice, directing focused attention to both your immediate surroundings and precise foot placement.

The importance of suitable footwear cannot be overstated; prioritise options that offer robust support and reliable grip to navigate varying terrains with confidence. Build endurance through consistent hikes, progressively increasing distance and difficulty.

GENERAL INFO

This walk is rated as moderate with ample opportunity to push yourself to make this more challenging with additional options offered. All tracks remain well-marked, but the alpine terrain is at times undulating. There are some rough tracks along with gradual ascents to the summits, plus some steep uphill and downhill sections.

This walking holiday starts and finishes in Jindabyne with transfers between accommodation and sections of the walk. Each walking day you’ll cover an average of just over 15km, but with the options, we offer along the way that can be increased. As part of the walk, you’ll even take an optional ride on a chairlift for part of the way. We move your luggage ahead to your next accommodation at each stage, so all you need to carry is what you need for the day.

For what to bring please refer to Gear Advice on our FAQ section.

HOW TO GET THERE AND AWAY

The Roof of Australia commences in Jindabyne, approximately halfway between Sydney and Melbourne.

By public transport from Canberra

Using the bus from Canberra is possible, however given the irregularity of the bus, you may have to consider adding a day to the walk to make this work or work in a private transfer to Cooma (with our transport provider at extra cost) if you are heading back on a Saturday or Sunday.

There is a direct public transport service 3 days a week to Jindabyne. The return service is on the same day 3 times a week.  See the trainlink website at- transportnsw.info/regional.

The bus departs Monday, Wednesday and Friday in both directions between Canberra (Kingston) Station and Jindabyne Coach stop.  Canberra Kingston Station is 11 mins from the airport. Jindabyne Coach stop is central, but you may need to walk a short way to your accommodation.

Fortunately, Cooma buses also depart from Jindabyne to Cooma from the information centre at 9 am Monday to Friday. This bus arrives at Cooma in time for the bus that goes from Cooma to Canberra at 10 am.

By private car

The easiest way to get to Jindabyne is to drive. There is a daily coach service from Canberra to Cooma – you would then need to catch a taxi from Cooma to Jindabyne. You can also fly from Sydney to Cooma on Aeropelican and catch a private transfer to Jindabyne. We can supply more detailed information on request. However, it is more convenient and often cheaper to hire a car and leave it in Jindabyne during this walking holiday.

Private Transfer

Your Auswalk holiday includes a shuttle transfer from Thredbo to Jindabyne, where the holiday finishes. We can organise for you to be picked up by private transfer from Jindabyne and driven to Cooma or Canberra.  We can also transfer you in the other direction at the beginning of the walk. There will be an additional cost for these transfers so please contact the office for a quote.

THE WALKING

The tracks are good underfoot but there is some elevation to this walk – but only on some of the days. The days are about an average of 18 km, however, that is pushed up by the two long days at 20 km. You will need a good level of walking fitness to enjoy this walk. See the 5 or 6-day versions for a moderate-rated walk. The walk snakes its way through the Snowys and includes all the epic new walks that have been constructed these last few years.  It is somewhat challenging, but well worth the effort.

WEATHER

This walk can be done any time from the start of December to 1st April. This mountain environment is about 10–15 degrees cooler than Melbourne and Sydney, and there is a possibility of bad weather even during summer. January and February are usually warm and the alpine wildflowers are at their best. December and March are usually mild and considered by many people to be the best times to visit.

See the Bureau of Meteorology’s information about average temperatures and rainfall at different times of the year.

INSURANCE

We require that you have adequate travel insurance against potential losses, damage or injury, including cancellation costs and loss of luggage.

For all trips that require international travel, you must have purchased travel insurance that also includes medical evacuation coverage.

We also charge a cancellation fee if you cancel your walking holiday after we have confirmed it to cover costs incurred from our suppliers and in the office.  See the FAQ section for more information.

INFORMATION PACK

For nearly 30 years we have taken pride in providing seamlessly organised walking holidays, but we know, even with that in mind, that you’ll have many more questions. You will receive a very detailed information pack and itinerary approximately 6 weeks out from departure outlining all the fine details and much more.

CONTACT

If you have any questions, feel free to ask one of our destination consultants or to speak with one of our guides. You can get in touch with us via our contact form, email us at info@auswalk.com.au, or call us on +61 3 9597 9767.

Fabulous 5 days walking in the snowy mountains – very well organized by Auswalk. The highlight was definitely the beautiful day walk to Mt Carruthers via Blue Lake – we were lucky enough to have fabulous weather. A top 10 Australian day walk. Topped off by a very relaxing couple of days in Thredbo at the end…..

Just back from an impulsively-booked 7 day Snowies/Mt Kosciuszko walk with Auswalk. How else could one book an impulsive walking holiday (at Christmas time, no less) in a longed-for destination and yet be thoroughly assured that the walk notes would be honed from years of expertise and local knowledge and contain everything to get us from A to Z, on every day of self-guided walking ahead of us. Plus luggage transfer safely accomplished, meals beautifully catered with due care to any intolerances, national park fees duly accommodated and chair-lift options already ticketed for those days when that last long steep and arduous ascent or descent is just a step too far after a long day spent reveling in the beauties and spectacles and bush picnics in the most idyllic settings our incredible country has to offer? Never a doubt that our accommodation will be anything less than impeccable, nor that those responsible for smoothing and catering for our holiday and sending us on our way each day will be capable, reliable, punctual, knowledgeable and sincerely concerned for our wellbeing. Thank you Auswalk. Such a relief to be able to leave the plethora of intricate arrangements necessary for that 7 days of blissful freedom in your capable hands in the assurance that nothing would be forgotten, nor would anything go amiss where human effort could prevent it. Even the weather decided to make everything perfect for us, as it inexplicably often does when we undertake such walks. Such good memories made. Leaving us pining for the next Auswalk experience as per usual. It’s going to be another long year!

Auswalks makes the walking easy (well almost!). In taking care of all the boring stuff (booking accommodation, meals, arranging transport, luggage transfers and packed lunches) means you just get up each morning and walk. Route instructions for self-guided walks are excellent: comprehensive, reliable, and trustworthy.

I was very happy with the Roof of Australia walk organised by Auswalk and would certainly be happy to go on another walk of theirs. The directions were very good, as was the accommodation and transport. The Australians we met on the trip, including our hosts, could not have been more pleasant and helpful.
