Self-guided

OVERVIEW

The Grampian's Peaks Trail ("GPT") is simply outstanding. The track for a large part makes its way along escarpments with magnificent views left and right as you walk. This walk follows just over 100km of the best of the new sections and some of the best of the not-to-be-missed old sections that make up the GPT. Walk through rugged, craggy-yet-strangely-beautiful landscapes with some of the best views seen by foot anywhere in Australia.

This is the place to see Australian native fauna with cliffs and rough valleys providing refuge for many native animals, including kangaroos, wallabies, echidnas, koalas and an abundance of bird species. The sandy soil is ideal for native plants, making this national park famous for its spring wildflowers. There are over 800 varieties of indigenous plant species, many of them wildflowers which come into vivid bloom each spring.

This is the Grampians trip for you if: you enjoy a more challenging, truly epic walk with incredible views throughout.

Highlights

  • Venus Baths, Grand Canyon, Elephant’s Hide, Silent Street and the Pinnacle.
  • Summit Mnt William, Mnt Abrupt, Mnt Sturgeon and Mnt Rosea
  • Hike through stunning forests and a diverse range of landscapes as you make your way from Halls Gap to Dunkeld

DAY 2
HALLS GAP TO THE PINNACLE AND MACKEY'S PEAK

The Grampians sandstone is incredibly hard having resisted erosion for millions if not billions of years. Today’s Grampians Peaks Trail walk traverses the fascinating Grand Canyon circuit through the Wonderland Range, passing many unusual rock formations including the Elephant’s Hide, Venus Baths, Guardian of the Canyon and Echo Cave as you climb to the Pinnacle. Today’s aim is the lofty heights of the Pinnacle Lookout. The return to Halls Gap is via Mackey’s Peak.

Elevation: 533m
Meals: Cooked breakfast and Walkers lunch
Accommodation: Motel in Halls Gap in rooms with ensuites

DAY 3
LINEAR WALK TO MOUNT ROSEA AND BOROUGH HUTS

The area has been an important source of food, water and shelter for Aboriginal people for 20,000 years and contains the majority of surviving Aboriginal rock art sites in South East Australia. The hike to Mnt Rosea on the Grampians Peaks Trail is a real highlight of the overall track. This is the most challenging of all the walks and is another day full of high points including Sundial Peak, Lakeview Lookout and the walk up to Mt Rosea. There are lots of extra options along the way.

Walking: Moderate / 20km / 6–7.5 hrs
Elevation: 456m
Meals: Cooked breakfast and Walkers lunch
Accommodation:  Motel in Halls Gap in rooms with ensuites

DAY 4
MOUNT WILLIAM TO JIMMYS CREEK RD

The hardy vegetation in the Grampians is sustained by water coursing through streams, creeks, waterfalls and caves scattered throughout the ranges. The sandy soil is ideal for native plants, making this national park famous for its spring wildflowers. Today’s Grampians walk follows the track from Mount William to Jimmys Creek Rd. The walk has you traverse the Major Mitchell Plateau with views to both west and east for literal kilometres as you walk. Today’s walk is one of the top three walks in the Grampians.

Walking: Moderate to challenging/ 19.5km / 6.5-8hrs
Elevation: 823m
Meals: Cooked breakfast, Walkers lunch and 2 course a la carte dinner
Accommodation: Motel in Halls Gap in rooms with ensuites

DAY 5
JIMMYS CREEK RD TO GRAMPIANS RD

Weathered over millions of years, Victoria’s Grampians National Park covers 168,000 hectares and is made entirely of sandstone that’s eroded to form several distinct mountain ranges. Today’s walk named Jimmy’s Creek Rd to Grampians Rd does not sufficiently describe the beauty of this walk and the sense of space.  Get to enjoy views over almost all the Grampians Ranges as you walk. The array of diverse landscapes for you to enjoy adds to the experience. Look out for the wildlife in and around the track, especially the mob of kangaroos at the campground.

Walking: Moderate / 20.3km / 6-7 hrs
Elevation: 996m
Meals: Cooked breakfast and Walkers lunch (Dinner included if staying at the Royal Mail on a weekend). See accommodation and dining for details.

Be prepared for a bit of wow.

FITNESS GUIDE

It’s well worth investing some time and effort preparing for your walking holiday. The graph shows the average daily distance, elevation and terrain difficulty for your hike. The dotted line indicates the average across all our walks, which will give you a feel for how challenging your walk is compared to all – and the recommended type, and amount, of preparation needed.  Of course, you can adapt this according to your existing fitness levels and lifestyle.

The graph and the information below can be used in conjunction with the fitness guide to help you prepare for your walking adventure. Across all the walks at Auswalk the average daily distance is 16.8km, average daily elevation is 448m, average terrain difficulty is 5/10.

ngraph

distance - above average

Distance training is a major consideration in your overall training program. As you progress, incorporate longer walks into your training plan. Schedule one or two long walks each week, gradually increasing the distance until you can comfortably cover 17-25 km in a single day. Additionally, also include back-to-back walks to simulate walking on consecutive days. This helps your body adapt to the demands of walking for multiple days in a row. Take every opportunity you can to walk. If you have a fitness watch or phone, you should try to reach >15,000 steps every day. Ensure you can comfortably walk the average distance per day displayed in the graph, at least one month before you undertake your hike.

elevation - above average

Elevation training is a major consideration in your overall training program. You must include walks with serious hill climbs. If you do not have access to hills, it it essential to replicate the elevation level you will be undertaking in any way possible via a treadmill or stair climber. Prioritizing resistance training assumes heightened significance in this context, emphasizing the incorporation of stair climbing whenever feasible. Walking up and down stairs at work, at a local oval with a grandstand, or up and down small hills, boring as that sounds, is incredibly useful. Elevation is the chief walk killer, not distance, as it uses an entirely different set of muscles. If high altitude is a factor, incorporate sessions at a higher altitude to acclimatise your body to reduced oxygen levels ( this may not be possible). Ensure you can comfortably walk the average elevation per day displayed in the graph, at least one month before you undertake your hike.

terrain - Rocky and Mountaineous

Rocky and Uneven

Whilst preparing for walking on rocky terrain, you must focus on the development of balance, strength, and agility. Integrate targeted strength exercises, such as lunges, squats, and step-ups, to fortify your leg muscles, with a particular emphasis on enhancing stability on uneven surfaces. Balancing exercises are essential. Undertake core strength activity, coupled with exercises such as planks and russian twists to enhance balance. As you progress, include hikes on progressively rougher terrain to acclimate to rocky conditions. Additionally, the appropriate footwear with good ankle support and tread for grip are essential. Stay mindful, watch your step, and use trekking poles for added stability.

Mountainous

As terrain associated with Mountain climbs is often somewhat uneven and or rocky balancing and core exercises are vital. Try to also include some form of elevation in more than 50% of your walking and prioritise resistance training, whilst incorporating stairs anytime you can. Walking up mountains or hills or up and down stairs at work, at a local oval with a grandstand or up and down small hills, boring as that sounds, is incredibly useful. Elevation is often the chief walk killer, not distance, as it uses an entirely different set of muscles. So concentrate on doing lots of squats and lunges to build your glute muscles.

GENERAL INFO

The Grampians walks build nicely and can be as challenging as you wish them to be. There are extra walking opportunities here, so if you want more we are pleased to offer them. Overall this walk is challenging, with some flat sections along well-marked trails, but with many gradual ascents to mountain summits for spectacular views, and some steep uphill and downhill sections to the forested valleys below.

You’ll be walking an average of 19.8 km a day. Those that enjoy the solitude of nature will appreciate some days where you are more likely to encounter echidnas and kangaroos rather than other people.

There are five walking days on this seven-day itinerary starting in Halls Gap and finishing in Dunkeld. We include the accommodation, most meals, transfers, the Auswalk App for navigation, comprehensive trip notes and walking maps. We transfer your luggage to the next accommodation so you can focus on enjoying the walking with just your daypack and what you need for the day.

For what to bring please refer to Gear Advice on our FAQ section.

HOW TO GET THERE AND AWAY

By Public Transport

V Line operates a combined train/coach service from Southern Cross Railway Station in downtown Melbourne to Stawell. There are a couple of departure times each day – check their website www.vline.com.au  / phone: 1800 800 007 . There is an airport shuttle bus service from Melbourne airport arrivals area, direct to Southern Cross station in Melbourne’s CBD. It’s called Sky Bus & departs every 20 minutes.

If you choose to catch public transport to Stawell please advise your arrival time so that we can arrange for you to be picked up at the railway station and transferred to your first nights’ accommodation.

At the end of your holiday, you will need to catch the v/line bus from Dunkeld and Grampians Visitor Information Centre. This service departs early on some given days so check the vline website www.vline.com.au for up-to-date information.

Depending on the day of the week this could be via Ballarat or Ararat.

IMPORTANT: All V Line services should be pre-booked.

By Private Car – Self Drive Option
Please note if you choose to self drive on your Grampians Walking Holiday you will need to drive to the end point of each walking day. We will then have you transferred back to the start of the walk. If you choose this option there is a significant discount per person, it will also allow you to complete each days walk in your own time.

Directions from Melbourne, follow the M8 past Ballarat to Ararat. Turn L, go through Ararat, and continue to Moyston via Pomonal to Halls Gap where you will drive to your first accommodation. This is the fastest way. Please watch out for wildlife on the roads, especially at dusk.

The Grampians walks finishes in the morning of day 6 in Dunkeld. As you will be self driving throughout this walk, your car will be with you at The Royal Mail in Dunkeld.

TRANSFERS

If you arrive by public transport, Auswalk will arrange all your transfers. If you are willing to use your own car, we will transfer you from the end of the walk back to the beginning of the walk in the morning each day. All the details will be outlined in your walk notes. This saves a significant cost for us which is passed back to you.

During summer, it is common to have daily temperatures in the 30s, with the nights remaining quite warm. April and May are cooler and the winter months of June through August can vary from cool to mild temperatures with the occasional cold, wet spell. The wildflowers are usually at their best between August and November – although there are always some flowers around. Not available during July.

See the Bureau of Meteorology’s information about average temperatures and rainfall at different times of the year.

Walk was as expected. Well organized, great walks, great guides. great accommodation & overly generous meals ! Good for big eaters. Felt like I was forever eating ! Temptation to not over eat was very difficult (ha ha). Excellent variety & quantity of walk munchies but thought a bit more variety on lunches would have been good ? We had 4 days of rolls & 2 days of wraps. Maybe 2 days each of rolls, wraps & maybe a salad for variety ? Accommodation at the Royal Mail was extremely enjoyed along with the dinner there and it was a great way to finish off the week. Thank you 🙂

OVERVIEW

The Grampian's Peaks Trail ("GPT") is simply outstanding. Today’s aim is the lofty heights of the Pinnacle Lookout. The return to Halls Gap is via Mackey’s Peak.

Walking: Moderate / 16.9km / 5-6 hrs

Accommodation: The Royal Mail, Dunkeld in rooms with ensuites

DAY 6
MNT ABRUPT, THE PICCANINNY AND MOUNT STURGEON

Today we walk the very southern end of the Grampians Peaks Trail, more specifically over Mount Abrupt, Mount Sturgeon and the Piccaninny. There are stunning views from Mount Abrupt back to Signal Point, over the Victoria Ranges, the Western Plains and the township of Dunkeld.  This is a big day and epic like the first day. Be prepared for a bit of wow.

Walking: Easy to Moderate / 15.6 or 19 km / 6–7 hrs / shorter walk is available
Elevation: 820m or 1070m
Meals: Breakfast, walkers lunch and 2 course a la carte dinner
Accommodation:  The Royal Mail, Dunkeld in rooms with ensuites

Fitness Guide

WEATHER

September to November is usually warm. The summer months of December to March are likely to be warm, and sometimes quite hot.

INSURANCE

We strongly recommend the purchase of travel insurance for all of our trips. We absolutely require that you purchase a travel insurance policy for all travel overseas. Thank you 🙂
