DAY 1
ARRIVE IN SAN MINIATO

Make your way to San Miniato, a fabulous and truly beautiful place to explore. As you arrive, soak in the exquisite views and the unique architecture of the local seminary. In the evening, indulge in a delicious risotto, enhanced by the region’s prized white truffle.

DAY 2
SAN MINIATO TO GAMBASSI

Today marks your first full day of walking, traversing a picturesque route through the rolling hills of the Val d’Elsa. This landscape is rich in Tuscan charm, punctuated by charming churches such as Pieve di Coiano and Pieve a Chianni. In the late afternoon, walk into your accommodation in Gambassi and enjoy a well-earned rest.

DAY 3
GAMBASSI TO SAN GIMIGNANO

Walk through the unique small towns of Collemuccioli and Pieve di Cellole, and visit the famous sanctuary in Pancole. From here, walk on and explore the UNESCO World Heritage site of San Gimignano, with its narrow medieval streets and amazing architecture.

DAY 4
SAN GIMIGNANO TO GRACCIANO

This stage follows the ancient path on the Via Francigena, crossing Tuscan Hills and past vineyards and olive fields. Today’s walk includes a wide variety of beautiful landscapes, including forested areas and farmland. There is a short detour to the gorgeous Abbey of Santa Maria a Conero of the 11th Century.

DAY 5
GRACCIANO TO MONTERIGGIONI

The day starts out by walking out of your accommodation in Gracciano and over Pieve a Elsa to the ancient Etruscan thermal hot pool of Caldane. Pass through the town of Strove and its stunning Romanesque church and then onto picturesque Abbadia a Isola. It’s a short walk from here to Monteriggioni and its crown of towers. There’s plenty of time to explore Monteriggioni and clock up a few more kilometres if you so desire.

DAY 6
MONTERIGGIONI TO SIENA

Today’s walk involves tackling the Montagnola Senese, an area known for being very undulating and probably the most mountainous in Tuscany. Walk via the ancient medieval suburb of Cerbaia, which is mostly abandoned to the Chiocciola Castle via a wooded area. Walk up to Poggio di Riciano and then down to the Pian del Lago River and Renai Forest to enter the much-acclaimed town of Siena, another UNESCO World Heritage site.

DAY 7
Siena to Lucignano

Fingers crossed for sunshine on the first day of your journey, because the Crests of the Val d’Arbia are absolutely breathtaking. After waving goodbye to Siena, you’ll follow the iconic dirt roads typical of the region all the way to the charming village of Lucignano, home to a beautiful church. As you approach Monteroni d’Arbia, you’ll come across the impressive Grancia di Cuna, a fortified farm that once stored the wheat reserves for the Republic of Siena. It’s a journey full of history and stunning scenery!

DAY 8
Lucignano to Buonconvento

From Lucignano, the route takes you through the peaceful Valle dell’Ombrone to Buonconvento. Passing through the village gates, you’ll step into its old town and discover why its name translates to “happy, fortunate place.” Stroll along its picturesque streets, where life moves at a relaxed, provincial pace. And if you’re an art lover, don’t miss the Museum of Sacred Art of the Val d’Arbia, where you can admire masterpieces by some of the most renowned Sienese painters.

Arriving: By Plane

From either airport, you can take a train to San Miniato.

Train from the Airport to San Miniato

  • From Pisa Airport:
    Take a bus, taxi, or train to Pisa Centrale Train Station, then board a train to San Miniato. Some trains are direct, while others require a change in Empoli.

    • Travel time: 30 to 50 minutes, depending on the train
    • Cost: €4.50–€6.10, one way
  • From Florence Airport:
    Take a taxi or the public “Vola in Bus” service to Florence Santa Maria Novella Train Station (More details here). From there, board a direct train to San Miniato.

    • Travel time: 40 to 55 minutes, depending on the train
    • Cost: Approximately €5.50 per person, one way

Note: Once you arrive at San Miniato-Fucecchio Train Station, contact your hotel in San Miniato Alto to confirm your arrival time. They will arrange to pick you up and take you to the hotel.

Getting Away: By Train from Buonconvento

    There are no direct trains from Buonconvento to Pisa Airport. You will need to change trains once or twice, usually in Empoli, Siena, or Grosseto.

    • Travel time: 2 hours 20 minutes to 3 hours 15 minutes
    • Cost: €12–€30 (or more) per person, one way, depending on the train type
      From Pisa Centrale, you can take a bus, train, or taxi to reach Pisa Airport.
  • To Florence Airport:
    There are no direct trains from Buonconvento to Florence Airport. You will need to change trains once or twice, usually in Empoli or Siena.

    • Travel time: 2 hours 10 minutes to 2 hours 40 minutes
    • Cost: Approximately €12 per person, one way

For over 30 years we have taken pride in providing seamlessly organised walking holidays, but we know, even with that in mind, that you’ll have many more questions. You will receive a very detailed information pack and itinerary approximately 6 weeks out from departure outlining all the fine detail and much more.

    Plans all worked well reaching departure point. The app worked effectively and route recommendations were on point. The accommodation was always a surprise package, some better than others with the hosts. Thank you Auswalk, trip was amazing and met my expectations
