DAY 1
Arrive at St Bees

Make your own way to St Bees at your leisure and settle into your hotel on the seafront, with the afternoon free to walk the beach, climb up to the lighthouse, or explore the Priory, founded in 1020AD, before wandering the pleasant township and its handful of pubs. In the evening, meet your group for welcome drinks and a trip briefing, followed by an included dinner together before setting off on the Coast to Coast tomorrow.

Meals: Welcome Dinner
Accommodation: 3-star hotel in St Bees

DAY 2
St Bees to Borrowdale

Today the Coast to Coast begins in earnest, following the trail along the coast and inland to Sandwith before continuing on to Honister. Settle in for the night at your accommodation, deep in the heart of the Lake District.

Walks: 12.5 km
Meals: Cooked breakfast, walkers’ lunch & dinner
Accommodation: 3-star hotel in Borrowdale

DAY 3
Borrowdale to Grasmere

A gentle start through Stonethwaite Valley follows the beck of the same name, with Eagle Crag looming across the valley. The gradient then steepens for the push up to the rocky outcrop of Lining Crag, where you’ve earned the break, with views back to Scafell Pike, England’s highest peak at 978 m. Easier walking follows to Greenup Edge and on to the head of Far Easedale Valley, from where you can take the high route over Calf and Helm Crags in good weather. Or continue down beside Far Easedale Beck into Grasmere, where the poet Wordsworth lived for years and called it “the fairest place on earth”. If time allows, perhaps visit his Dove Cottage, now a museum.

Walks: 13 km
Meals: Cooked breakfast
Accommodation: 4-star inn at Grasmere

DAY 4
Grasmere to Patterdale

Walk up the delightful valley of Tongue Gill to Grisedale Hause, then either follow the beck down through Grisedale Valley into Patterdale and Glenridding, or, in good weather, take the high ridge walk via St Sunday Crag. The terrain is moderate to challenging throughout, with some sustained climbing and rocky sections along the way. You’ll be picked up at the end of the walk for a short transfer to your accommodation.

DAY 6
Patterdale to Kirkby Stephen

Say goodbye to the Lake District with a demanding walk over Angle Tarn and Kidsty Pike, at 784 m the highest point on the Coast to Coast. It’s then a steep descent via Kidsty Howes down towards Haweswater and an undulating stretch above the lake to Burnbanks village. It’s one of the longer days on the trail, so vehicle support remains available if you need to shorten the route, and from Burnbanks the group transfer is approximately 50 minutes on to Kirkby Stephen for the night.

Walks: 17 km
Meals: Cooked breakfast
Accommodation: Comfortable guesthouse in Kirkby Stephen

DAY 7
Kirkby Stephen to Keld

Today you cross the Pennines, the backbone of the British Isles, and with them an important division of watersheds, with everything east of here draining into the North Sea. Climb country lanes and boggy tracks to the summit of Nine Standards Rigg, where a series of large drystone cairns, thought to be at least 800 years old, mark the ridge. Beyond lies a notorious stretch of peat bogs, where the paths are gradually being reinforced with flagstones to cross. Transfer back to Kirkby Stephen, approximately 30 minutes, for your second night at the same guesthouse.

Walks: 18 km
Meals: Cooked breakfast
Accommodation: Comfortable guesthouse in Kirkby Stephen

DAY 8
Keld to Reeth

Transfer back to Keld to begin the day, then follow what’s sometimes described as the Royal Road to Reeth, a low level route that follows the riverside for much of the way. Walks: 18 km
Meals: Cooked breakfast
Accommodation: 4-star hotel in Reeth

DAY 9
Reeth to Richmond

Wake early today to enjoy your morning coffee with breakfast over the amazing views at this elegant hotel. Follow the line of the Swale River past pastures, meadowlands, woodlands and country lanes, a route that takes you past the old priory at Marrick, now an outdoor adventure centre. Continue through the village of Marske with its lovely old church, and on through Whitcliffe Wood into historic Richmond. The largest town on the Coast to Coast, Richmond is watched over by the ruins of its castle, dating from 1071. We stay in another stylish hotel for the next two nights.

Walks: 17-18 km
Meals: Cooked breakfast
Accommodation: 4-star hotel in Richmond

DAY 10
Rest Day in Richmond

Spend a full day exploring Richmond at your own pace. No walking is required today, though the town, with its castle and cobbled streets, is well worth exploring at leisure.

Meals: Cooked breakfast
Accommodation:4-star hotel in Richmond

DAY 11
Ingleby Cross to Clay Bank Top

Transfer from Richmond to Ingleby Cross to begin an exhilarating day on the trail. Start with a steep climb through Arncliffe Wood onto wild upland moors covered in heather, with views over the Vale of Mowbray and, on a clear day, back to the Pennines or even the North Sea. Keep an eye out for the ancient burial sites that dot this stretch, marked as tumulus or howe on the map, and stop at the Lord Stones Café, built into the hillside, for a coffee. A last push follows over the Wain Stones at Hasty Bank down to Clay Bank Top, from where you’re transferred to your stylish accommodation.

Walks: 16-18 km
Meals: Cooked breakfast and dinner
Accommodation: 4-star hotel North York Moors

DAY 12
Clay Bank Top to Blakey Ridge

An easier day that still starts with a steep climb, this time to the top of Urra Moor. From there, follow the wide track across this heather covered plateau, watching for ancient carved stones and old estate boundary markers. Part of the route follows the trail of the former Rosedale Ironstone Railway, which served the nearby mines more than 150 years ago, and on a clear day you’ll have views over the Farndale valley. You’ll arrive at Blakey Ridge and the historic Lion Inn, a good spot to stop for refreshments before transferring back to your accommodation.

Walks: 14 km
Meals: Cooked breakfast, walkers’ lunch and dinner
Accommodation: 4-star hotel North York Moors

DAY 13
Littlebeck to Robin Hood's Bay

Your last day on the Coast to Coast, and it’s a spectacular one, beginning with a transfer to Littlebeck before a walk through leafy woodland to the Falling Foss Falls near Midge House Tearooms. From there, follow the stream of May Beck and country lanes for a gentle climb to the top of Graystone Hills moor, and on through more lanes to the village of High Hawsker before the tall sea cliffs north of Robin Hood’s Bay come into view. As you crest the last rise, the whole bay is revealed below you. Walk down through the village to the official end point of the Coast to Coast at the bottom, in time for an included farewell dinner.

Walks: 16-18 km

ACCOMMODATION & DINING

OVERVIEW

As part of our In Style range, you’ll stay in a mix of country hotels, inns and guesthouses handpicked for their comfort level and location on the trail. Your first night is in a hotel on the seafront at St Bees, and the Lake District nights take you on to a hotel in Borrowdale. From here, the standard of accommodation steps up for the rest of the trip, starting with an inn in Grasmere and a hotel at Patterdale on Ullswater. Over the Pennines, a guesthouse in Kirkby Stephen and a hotel in Reeth keep you close to the dales. Two nights at a hotel in Richmond and three at a hotel in the North York Moors round out your final stretch of the trail. An included breakfast and lunch feature on walking days. An included welcome dinner in St Bees and an included farewell dinner in Robin Hood’s Bay bookend the trip. On the evenings in between, you’re free to explore the pubs and restaurants of each village along the way.

FITNESS GUIDE

It’s well worth investing some time and effort in preparing for your walking holiday. The graph shows the average daily distance, elevation, and terrain difficulty for your hike. The dotted line indicates the average across all our walks, which will give you a feel for how challenging your walk is compared to all – and the recommended type and amount, of preparation needed. Of course, you can adapt this according to your existing fitness levels and lifestyle.

The graph and the information below can be used in conjunction with the fitness guide to help you prepare for your walking adventure. Across all walks, the average daily distance is 16.8 km, the average daily elevation is 448 m, average terrain difficulty is 5/10.

ngraph

DISTANCE - BELOW AVERAGE

Distance is not a major consideration in your training program. However, you should still incorporate some long walks as it will increase your cardiovascular fitness.

ELEVATION - BELOW AVERAGE

Elevation is not a major consideration in your training program. However, you should still incorporate some form of resistance training, as it will increase your endurance.

TERRAIN - UNEVEN TERRAIN / MOUNTAINOUS / UNDULATING TERRAIN

UNEVEN TERRAIN

Preparation for hiking on uneven terrain demands a blend of physical and mental readiness.

Begin with balance-enhancing exercises, such as one-legged stands and stability ball workouts, laying a groundwork for stability and coordination. Strengthening the lower body is especially important, achieved through the incorporation of squats, lunges, and step-ups. Gradually increase the complexity of the terrain on which you walk, moving from gravel paths to rocky trails. Cultivate mindfulness during your practice, directing focused attention to both your immediate surroundings and precise foot placement.

The importance of suitable footwear cannot be overstated; prioritise options that offer robust support and reliable grip to navigate varying terrains with confidence. Build endurance through consistent hikes, progressively increasing distance and difficulty.

MOUNTAINOUS / UNDULATING TERRAIN

As terrain associated with mountain climbs is often somewhat uneven and rocky, balancing and core exercises are vital.

Try to also include some form of elevation in more than 50% of your walking and prioritise resistance training, whilst incorporating stairs anytime you can. Walking up mountains or hills, up and down stairs at work, or up and down at a local oval with a grandstand is incredibly useful. Elevation is often where walkers encounter problems not distance, as it uses an entirely different set of muscles to everyday flat walking. Concentrate on doing lots of squats and lunges to build your glute muscles.

GENERAL INFO

HOW TO GET THERE AND GET AWAY

Arrival

Make your own way to St Bees on the Cumbrian coast, arriving in time for a trip briefing and an included dinner that evening.

By Air: The easiest option would be to fly into the UK, any of the major cities will suffice as the UK’s excellent train network will ferry you to St Bees. The main UK airports for international flights are Heathrow Airport, Gatwick Airport, and Manchester Airport.

The nearest airports to St Bees are: Durham-Tees Valley Airport, Leeds Bradford Airport and Newcastle Airport.

By Rail: The easiest way to get to the start of the track from London is by train. St Bees has good train services. For easy train bookings in the UK, we recommend using Rome2Rio to plan your journey.  Trains from London connect with the Cumbrian Coast Line (Northern Rail) which services St Bees. There are several trains daily. Trains to St Bees from London will take approx. 5 hr, with 1 or 2 changes required.

By Coach: National Express Coaches link most major towns and cities in the UK. For details of departure times and to book tickets call 0871 781 8181 (or +44 (0) 871 781 8181 from overseas) or visit https://beta.nationalexpress.com/.

Departure

The walk finishes in Robin Hood’s Bay, right at the official end point of the Coast to Coast. After an included farewell dinner and a last night at your hotel in the North York Moors, you’ll transfer to Whitby, approximately 20 minutes away. From there, you can catch a train onward.

THE WALKING

Some days are as short as 14 km. We can also adjust this schedule to include rest days or, you could walk the Western Half to Kirkby Stephen, or the Eastern Half from Kirkby Stephen to Robin Hood’s Bay as another option.

The track conditions range, but all of the walks are passable, and no scrambling is required.  There is some incline but we’re not talking about anything significant. The United Kingdom is prone to having rain, no surprise there, so there may be some boggy sections but this entirely depends on the time of year and the prevailing conditions. Our advice is to prepare and bring the right gear and you’ll have a fabulous walk. See gear advice in FAQ’s

WEATHER ON THE COAST TO COAST WALK

This walk is not available from November to February. See the United Kingdom Met office or the United Kingdom Meteorological Service for information about the weather and average temperatures and rainfall at different times of the year.

INSURANCE

We require that you purchase travel insurance for all of our trips. We require that you purchase a travel insurance policy for all travel overseas that includes medical evacuation.

We also have to charge a cancellation fee if you cancel your walking holiday after we have confirmed it as we incur costs both from suppliers and in the office that can not be recouped. It is also important in the event of an accident or loss of property.

See the FAQ section for more information.

INFORMATION PACK

For over 30 years we have taken pride in providing seamlessly organised walking holidays, but we know, even with that in mind, that you’ll have many more questions. You will receive a very detailed information pack and itinerary approximately 6 weeks out from departure outlining all the fine detail and much more.

CONTACT

If you have any questions, feel free to ask one of our destination consultants. You can get in touch with us via our contact form, email us at info@auswalk.com.au, or call us on +61 3 9597 9767.

IMPORTANT - SOLO WALKERS

For your safety and well-being, we are unable to accept bookings for solo walkers on this self-guided trip. The remote nature of some tracks and limited mobile reception mean that walking alone presents a higher risk in case of emergencies.

Meals: Cooked breakfast, walkers’ lunch and dinner
Accommodation: 4-star hotel North York Moors

DAY 14
Departure

After an included breakfast, transfer approximately 20 minutes to Whitby, where the trip finishes. From there you can catch a train for your onward journey.
