Lucerne to Alpnach Dorf

Today’s route tracks the scenic Horw Peninsula toward the shadow of Mount Pilatus. The defining moment is the steep climb over the Renggpass, a historic bottleneck that served as the sole overland link to Obwalden until the Brünigstrasse cut through in the 1860s. Expect a trek that pairs deep history with sweeping, panoramic views.

Alpnach Dorf to Emmetten

Your path culminates at the panoramic heights of Niederbauen, where a final, scenic cable car descent glides you effortlessly back down to the valley below.

Schedule one or two long walks each week, gradually increasing the distance until you can comfortably cover 26km in a single day. Additionally, also include back-to-back walks to simulate walking on consecutive days. This helps your body adapt to the demands of walking for multiple days in a row. Ensure you can comfortably walk the average distance per day displayed in the graph, at least one month before you undertake your hike.

Cultivate mindfulness during your practice, directing focused attention to both your immediate surroundings and precise foot placement. The importance of suitable footwear cannot be overstated; prioritise options that offer robust support and reliable grip to navigate varying terrains with confidence. Build endurance through consistent hikes, progressively increasing distance and difficulty.

HOW TO GET THERE AND AWAY

Arriving:

The closest international airport to Lucerne is Zurich Airport. Direct trains operate hourly from Zurich Airport to Lucerne, while additional connections with a quick and easy transfer at Zurich’s main station, Zurich HB, run every 30 minutes. The journey takes approximately 1 hour and 10 minutes.

Getting Away:

Your hiking experience concludes back in Lucerne. Lucerne’s excellent transport links provide easy access to onward travel.

BUS FARES

The bus journey from Alpnach Dorf to Dallenwil cannot be pre-booked and is therefore at own cost. This costs approximately CHF 6  pp.

TOURIST TAX

A small tourist tax, payable at each accommodation, is not included in the price.

LUGGAGE TRANSFERS

Each morning it will be up to you to place your luggage at the designated luggage pick-up point within the hotel by 9.00 am. This generally will be at reception or where you pick up your luggage the night before. There is a strict limit of one suitcase with a maximum weight of 20 kg.

INSURANCE

We require that you have adequate travel insurance against potential losses, damage, or injury, including cancellation costs and loss of luggage.

You must have purchased travel insurance for all trips requiring international travel, including medical evacuation coverage.

We also charge a cancellation fee if you cancel your walking holiday after we have confirmed it to cover costs incurred by our suppliers and in the office. See the FAQ section for more information.

Distance training is a major consideration in your overall training program. As you progress, incorporate longer walks into your training plan.

Schedule one or two long walks each week, gradually increasing the distance until you can comfortably cover 17-25 km in a single day. Also include walks on consecutive days to help your body adapt to the demands of walking for multiple days in a row. Take every opportunity you can to walk. If you have a fitness watch or phone, you should try to reach >15,000 steps every day.

Ensure you can comfortably walk the average distance per day displayed in the graph, at least one month before you undertake your hike.

TERRAIN - UNEVEN TERRAIN

Preparation for hiking on uneven terrain demands a nuanced blend of physical and mental readiness. Commence your regimen with balance-enhancing exercises, such as one-legged stands and stability ball workouts, laying a foundational groundwork for stability and coordination. Strengthening the lower body is pivotal, achieved through the incorporation of squats, lunges, and step-ups to enhance both stability and power. Gradually increase the complexity of the terrain on which you walk, moving from gravel paths to rocky trails. Cultivate mindfulness during your practice, directing focused attention to both your immediate surroundings and precise foot placement. The importance of suitable footwear cannot be overstated; prioritise options that offer robust support and reliable grip to navigate varying terrains with confidence. Build endurance through consistent hikes, progressively increasing distance and difficulty.

HOW TO GET THERE AND AWAY

Arriving:

The closest international airport to Lucerne is Zurich Airport. Direct trains operate hourly from Zurich Airport to Lucerne, while additional connections with a quick and easy transfer at Zurich’s main station, Zurich HB, run every 30 minutes. The journey takes approximately 1 hour and 10 minutes.

Getting Away:

Your hiking experience concludes back in Lucerne. Lucerne’s excellent transport links provide easy access to onward travel.

BUS FARES

The bus journey from Alpnach Dorf to Dallenwil cannot be pre-booked and is therefore at own cost. This costs approximately CHF 6  pp.

TOURIST TAX

A small tourist tax, payable at each accommodation, is not included in the price.

LUGGAGE TRANSFERS

Each morning it will be up to you to place your luggage at the designated luggage pick-up point within the hotel by 9.00 am. This generally will be at reception or where you pick up your luggage the night before. There is a strict limit of one suitcase with a maximum weight of 20 kg.

INSURANCE

We require that you have adequate travel insurance against potential losses, damage, or injury, including cancellation costs and loss of luggage.

You must have purchased travel insurance for all trips requiring international travel, including medical evacuation coverage.

We also charge a cancellation fee if you cancel your walking holiday after we have confirmed it to cover costs incurred by our suppliers and in the office. See the FAQ section for more information.

For your safety and well-being, we are unable to accept bookings for solo walkers on this self-guided trip. The remote nature of some tracks and limited mobile reception mean that walking alone presents a higher risk in case of emergencies.
