OVERVIEW

Just 90 minutes from Tokyo you can swap the hustle and bustle for the calm, beautiful mountains of Hakone.  Taking in a little bit of history and nature, you will walk along the Old Tokaido Road, an ancient, stone-paved trail that used to be a main highway and is now lined with incredible 400-year-old cedar trees. It’s a truly atmospheric hike. You can also visit the iconic Hakone Shrine, with its floating red torii gate right on the edge of Lake Ashi. The scenery is absolutely stunning, with the famous Mount Fuji often visible rising majestically over the tranquil Lake Ashi. You can get some of the best views of Fuji from the sightseeing cruise and from the Hakone Ropeway as we move around the area to access the best walking. On this walk, you will combine different kinds of transport like trains, an old-time funicular cable car and a ropeway, all offering incredible views along the way. Hakone is famous for its onsen, so be sure to spend some time soaking in the healing waters at your accommodation.

  • Day 1
  • Day 2
  • Day 3
  • Day 4

DAY 1
Hakone Yumoto

Leave Tokyo behind and make your own way to Hakone Yumoto, a mountain town built along the river. Spend the afternoon exploring the streets or following the water on a few short walks, and notice how different the pace feels once the city is behind you. In the evening, sink into an onsen or take another walk through town.

Accommodation: 4-star Ryokan / Hotel in Hakone Yumoto
Meals: Dinner
Walking: 4 km/ 1 to 1.5 hrs

DAY 2
Walk from Hakone Yumoto to Kowakidani

The walk starts gently before the climb begins in earnest, with more than 800 metres of ascent to work through over the day. The effort pays off in views along the way, and the forest keeps you company for much of the climb, along with a stop at Chisuji Falls. Once you reach your accommodation, the choice is yours. This part of Hakone is known for its art galleries and other sights, so take some time to explore further if you like. Whatever you choose, leave enough time to soak in an onsen before dinner.

Accommodation: 4-star Ryokan / Hotel in Kowakidani
Meals: Breakfast and dinner
Walking: 7 km / 4 hrs to 5 hrs
Elevation: +711 m /-218 m

DAY 3
Hiryu Falls via the Old Tokaido Rd to Lake Ashi

Today’s walk is one of the best of the trip. You’ll spend most of the day in forest, passing waterfalls as you go, and follow the Old Tokaido Road, a stone-paved path laid down over 400 years ago to help travellers cross this steep, muddy terrain. Towering cedar trees still line the route, planted centuries ago to mark the way and offer shade to the samurai, merchants, and pilgrims who once walked it.

Accommodation: 4-star Ryokan / Hotel at Lake Ashi
Meals: Breakfast and dinner
Walking: 11km/ 5 hrs to 6 hrs 30 mins
Elevation: +807 m /-648 m

DAY 4
Walk along Lake Ashi & Travel back to Tokyo

Today takes you along one of the most popular and accessible stretches of the walk, tracing the eastern shore of Lake Ashi between the ports of Moto-Hakone and Hakone-machi. The path stays largely flat and passes several of the area’s best-known sights, including Hakone Shrine with its floating torii gate, the historic Hakone Checkpoint, and Hakone Park. If you’d like more time on the lake, our ‘Hakone: Mountain Trails & Lake Ashi in Style – 5 Day’ itinerary is worth a look. From here, ride the ropeway and cable car (weather depending) back towards Hakone Yumoto, with a stop at Owakudani along the way. On a clear day, Mt Fuji comes into view from the ropeway, so keep your camera close. Collect your luggage and continue onto Tokyo using the Hakone Pass.

Meals: Breakfast
Walking: 9km / 2.5 hrs to 3 hrs
Elevation: +137 m /-138 m

ACCOMMODATION & DINING

OVERVIEW

Each night, you will be staying in excellent Ryokans or Hotels.

Ryokans are Japanese guest houses that come in a variety of styles, from traditional wooden structures to more of a modern hybrid hotel.

Ryokans have Japanese-style rooms with tatami mats, shoji sliding doors, and futons for sleeping on. A few of the Ryokan hotels have rooms with actual beds. The rooms will have ensuite toilets and be prepared for a little luxury because many accommodations have heated toilet seats. The bathing area is often shared and the pride of the Ryokan, especially when it’s located in an onsen area. Onsen are usually communal and separated by gender.

From a Western point of view, meals are elaborate affairs served in a traditional dining area. A traditional Kaiseki set meal is usually offered. But in many cases, we use accommodations that supply elaborate buffets. This may be dangerous if you love Japanese food, but at least you can walk it off the next day!

FITNESS GUIDE

It’s well worth investing some time and effort preparing for your walking holiday. The graph shows the average daily distance, elevation and terrain difficulty for your hike. The dotted line indicates the average across all our walks, which will give you a feel for how challenging your walk is compared to all – and the recommended type, and amount, of preparation needed.  Of course, you can adapt this according to your existing fitness levels and lifestyle.

The graph and the information below can be used in conjunction with the fitness guide to help you prepare for your walking adventure. Across all walks, average daily distance is 16.8km, average daily elevation is 448m, average terrain difficulty is 5/10.

ngraph

DISTANCE - BELOW AVERAGE

Distance is not a major consideration in your training program. However, you should still incorporate some long walks as it will increase your cardiovascular fitness.

ELEVATION - AVERAGE

Elevation training is a consideration in your overall training program. Try to include some form of elevation in more than 40% of your walking and prioritise resistance training, whilst incorporating stairs anytime you can. Walking up and down stairs at work, at a local oval with a grandstand or up and down small hills, boring as that sounds, is incredibly useful. Elevation is often the chief walk killer, not distance, as it uses an entirely different set of muscles. Ensure you can comfortably walk the average elevation per day displayed in the graph, at least one month before you undertake your hike.

TERRAIN - AVERAGE

FLAT TERRAIN

Training for walking on flat, hard terrain primarily focuses on building endurance and ensuring you can maintain a comfortable pace. Start with regular walks on sidewalks, roads, or paved paths to acclimate to the surface. Maintain a proper posture and engage your core muscles to support your back and maintain a steady gait. Ensure that you have comfortable, supportive footwear with adequate cushioning. If endurance is important, consider incorporating low-impact cross-training activities like swimming or cycling into your routine

MOUNTAINOUS / UNDULATING- TERRAIN

As terrain associated with Mountain climbs is often somewhat uneven and or rocky balancing and core exercises are vital. Try to also include some form of elevation in more than 50% of your walking and prioritise resistance training, whilst incorporating stairs anytime you can. Walking up mountains or hills or up and down stairs at work, at a local oval with a grandstand or up and down small hills, boring as that sounds, is incredibly useful. Elevation is often the chief walk killer, not distance, as it uses an entirely different set of muscles. So concentrate on doing lots of squats and lunges to build your glute muscles.

GENERAL INFO

HIGH SEASON CHARGES

In Japan, there are some periods when locals travel en masse as they are on holiday. These times are best avoided as the accommodation costs escalate considerably (more than double). It would make a lot of sense if you could avoid these times. Otherwise, see below for high-season periods. This could lead to the cost of the trip increasing by 30% or more.

Golden Week: Usually between 29 April & 05 May
Obon Period: Mid-August (Between 10th & 20th)
Silver Week: Usually between 18 & 26 September

AVAILABILITY

This walk is available from April to November. Many people prefer to walk in spring to see the cherry blossoms, and in autumn because of the beautiful autumn colours and the good weather.

TRANSPORT

We organise a Hakone Pass for you, provided on Day 2 and valid for Days 3 and 4, giving you free run of the local transport around Hakone and the trip back to Tokyo at the end of your walk.

HOW TO GET THERE AND AWAY

Hakone is about a 1.5-2hour train trip from Tokyo.

By Air: By far, the best option is to fly into Tokyo and take the train to Hakone. Return back to to Tokyo via train.

By rail: Japan has one of the best train systems in the world, so it’s very easy to catch a train to any destination in the country. An express train is the fastest way to travel to the area. Travelling in Japan on trains is a seamless experience, and it is not always necessary to pre-purchase tickets. There are plenty of rail staff who speak English well enough to direct you the right way and to converse with you about how to buy your ticket. We can provide more information if you wish, so please ask one of our destination consultants.

You will find the following website Japan Transit Planner really useful for catching trains in Japan. You can search train and bus timetables, departure and arrival stations, times and prices.

WALKING

This walk is easy to moderate. The walking is over well-maintained paths but expect each day to start with some reasonable elevation gains. For much of the time, you are walking under a forest canopy.

For what to bring, please refer to Gear Advice on our FAQ section.

WEATHER

From the end of  March, the temperature begins to increase. In summer, it’s quite warm and humid, but still good for walking, as the area is mountainous and cooler than Tokyo. If you enjoy warmer temperatures and taking a dip in a stream, then summer is a great time to walk.

The walk is not offered in winter. However, in autumn and early spring, soaking in an outside onsen in the cool of the night is one of those real, authentic Japanese experiences that you can look forward to after a big day on the track.

INSURANCE

We require that you have adequate travel insurance against potential losses, damage or injury, including cancellation costs and loss of luggage.

For all trips that require international travel, you must have purchased travel insurance that also includes medical evacuation coverage.

We also charge a cancellation fee if you cancel your walking holiday after we have confirmed it to cover costs incurred from our suppliers and in the office.  See the FAQ section for more information.

INFORMATION PACK

For over 30 years we have taken pride in providing seamlessly organised walking holidays, but we know, even with that in mind, that you’ll have many more questions. You will receive a very detailed information pack and itinerary approximately 6 weeks out from departure outlining all the fine detail and much more.
