ELEVATION - BELOW AVERAGE

Elevation is not a major consideration regarding how you train. However, you should still incorporate some form of resistance training as it will increase your endurance.

TERRAIN - FLAT TERRAIN

Training for walking on flat, hard terrain primarily focuses on building endurance and ensuring you can maintain a comfortable pace. Start with regular walks on sidewalks, roads, or paved paths to acclimate to the surface. Maintain a proper posture and engage your core muscles to support your back and maintain a steady gait. Ensure that you have comfortable, supportive footwear with adequate cushioning. THE WALKING

This walk is Easy. Trails follow scenic lakeside paths, historic brine pipeline tracks, and well-maintained mountain trails through the stunning UNESCO-listed Salzkammergut region. Daily walks range from approximately 3 to 5.5 hours, with distances up to 18km and moderate ascents, requiring a good basic level of fitness. While the paths are generally comfortable and clearly defined, some sections include short serpentine climbs and uneven terrain that require surefootedness.

This tour is ideal for those who enjoy a balanced combination of lake and mountain scenery, charming villages, imperial history, and culinary delights without highly technical or demanding terrain.

Although the route is well waymarked, you will be provided with comprehensive digital travel documents, navigation app access, GPS data, and detailed route notes. As mountain and lakeside weather can change quickly, at least one member of your party should be confident using a map and basic navigation skills to ensure you can always identify your location along the route.

Bus Fares

The bus journeys cannot be pre-booked and are therefore at own cost. Bus fares cost a total of approximately EUR 5 pp.

HOW TO GET THERE

ARRIVAL

If you’re flying in, Salzburg Airport offers convenient bus connections to Wolfgangsee. Arrive in Salzburg and take a scenic bus ride to Wolfgangsee, approximately one hour. Alternatively, you can travel by train to Bad Ischl and continue by bus, which takes about 30 minutes. For those arriving from Munich, a train to Salzburg followed by a bus ride will take around three hours.

Alternatively, we can assist in arranging transfers from Salzburg to your hotel.

DEPARTURE

Your walking adventure concludes at Wolfgangsee, offering flexible options for your onward travels.

LUGGAGE

Each morning it will be up to you to place your luggage at the designated luggage pick-up point within the hotel by 9.00 am. This generally will be at reception or where you pick up your luggage the night before. Please consult your hosts if any details. The number of bags is not limited but they must be less than 20kg.

INFORMATION PACK

For over 30 years we have taken pride in providing seamlessly organised walking holidays, but we know, even with that in mind, that you’ll have many more questions. You will receive a very detailed information pack and itinerary approximately 6 weeks out from departure outlining all the fine detail and much more.

IMPORTANT - SOLO WALKERS

For your safety and well-being, we are unable to accept bookings for solo walkers on our self-guided European Alps walking trips. The remote nature of some tracks and limited mobile reception mean that walking alone presents a higher risk in case of emergencies.

INSURANCE

We require that you have adequate travel insurance against potential losses, damage or injury, including cancellation costs and loss of luggage.

For all trips that require international travel, you must have purchased travel insurance that also includes medical evacuation coverage.

We also charge a cancellation fee if you cancel your walking holiday after we have confirmed it to cover costs incurred from our suppliers and in the office.  See the FAQ section for more information.

CONTACT

If you have any questions, feel free to ask one of our destination consultants. You can get in touch with us via our contact form, email us at connect@auswalk.com.au, or call us on +61 3 9597 9767.
