THE CAMINO FINISTERRE WITH AUSWALK

The Camino Finisterre, also known as Camino de Fisterra, predates Christianity. It was once a pagan pilgrimage to the mythical Cape Fisterra, or ‘The Coast of Death,’ where pagans believed the sun died and the worlds of the dead and living met. Today, Camino Finisterre is the only route to start in Santiago de Compostela and is often added as an extension to other Camino itineraries. The 90 km route ends along the rugged coast of Galicia in the historic town of Fisterra, but many choose to continue for an extra two days, finishing in the charming coastal town of Muxia.

Auswalk is Australia’s oldest dedicated walking holiday company, delivering self-guided and guided walks worldwide.

With over 30 years of experience, 30,000+ satisfied guests, and more than 3 million kilometres walked, you’re in expert hands!

OVERVIEW

Walking on the Camino Finisterre

The Camino Finisterre offers stunning coastal views, remote forests, and charming fishing villages along the way. The track has a rich history and provides a deeply spiritual and serene experience. It is perfect for those seeking a quieter, reflective journey. Interestingly, you might want to burn their clothes or boots as a symbolic act of closure. That’s the tradition! Also, you can walk back to whence you came, which was once always the way.

There is also the option to walk to Muxia after Cape Finistere, a delightful walk along the coast, which effectively adds two more days of walking. Muxía is known for its dramatic coastline and ancient legends. Muxia is home to the Sanctuary of Our Lady of the Boat (Nosa Señora da Barca), a site linked to the Virgin Mary, adding a mystical element to the journey.

For those who prefer flexibility or have a shorter time period to work with, customising the Camino Finisterre allows you to have your own bespoke itinerary. This way, you can stay longer in towns and walk at your own pace.  By the way, we offer a discount if you pair two of the Camino walks together.

Climate/Weather and best time to go

There are better times than others to walk the Camino. On almost all of the Caminos spring and autumn is the best time. Mid-summer can be a little warmer. Early winter is possible but the accommodations along the route are less likely to be open.

You will have to check the weather for each destination, especially through the Pyranees. We have provided more detailed information on the specific walk’s website page for each destination.
