DAY 1
ARRIVAL IN SAINT RÉMY DE PROVENCE

Your walking journey commences in Saint Rémy de Provence, nestled at the base of the Alpilles mountains. Accessible by a convenient 30-minute bus ride from Avignon, which itself is linked to the TGV train from Paris, Saint Rémy has long been a magnet for artists drawn to its picturesque landscapes. The azure Provençal skies accentuate the verdant fields and cypress trees,  the radiant sunflowers, and the rugged peaks of the Alpilles. It’s a haven for artists, so much so that Vincent Van Gogh spent his final year here, producing some of his most iconic works, including the famed Starry Night. Spend your evening leisurely wandering the quaint maze of streets in the town center, where an array of excellent dining options await. Tonight, enjoy dinner at your own pace before retiring for the night in Saint Rémy de Provence.

SAINT RÉMY DE PROVENCE LOOP

Set off on the Van Gogh trail, which leads you away from the town centre toward the foothills of the Alpilles, retracing the very path the artist trod over a century ago. Enamel reproductions of his masterpieces adorn the landscapes that inspired his iconic brushstrokes. Explore the Romanesque monastery, once Van Gogh’s sanctuary before his sojourn in Saint Rémy. Follow a shaded path through the forest, ascending gradually to the mountain’s crest. Though peaking at a modest 400 meters, the Alpilles stand distinct in the otherwise flat Rhône valley, offering breathtaking vistas of the sweeping plains, northern mountain ranges, and on clear days, the shimmering Mediterranean Sea to the south. A delightful route guides you back to Saint Rémy, passing through olive groves and tracing the path of an ancient Roman road. On today’s excursion, you ascend to the mountain ridge,  amidst fragrant thyme and cistus flowers, whilst enjoying expansive vistas of the northern mountains and southern plains. Following a winding descent, you arrive at the picturesque village of Maussane, meandering through verdant olive groves. Enjoy an evening at your leisure with dinner on your own before retiring for the night in Maussane.

MAUSSANE TO LES BAUX DE PROVENCE LOOP

In Maussane, don’t miss the bustling market on Thursday morning if that coincides with your trip. Begin your day with a leisurely stroll through the golf course, then ascend to the medieval villages of Les Baux de Provence along a secluded pathway. Exiting through the village’s medieval gate, descend back to the plains, passing through canals and olive groves on your return journey to Maussane. At the end of your walk, transfer to Arles. Enjoy dinner on your own and spend the night in Arles.

HOW TO GET THERE AND AWAY

Travelling to the Start of the walk

The walk starts in Saint Remy de Provence at your first accommodation and ends in Arles on the final morning at your accommodation. Please refer to your itinerary. You will need to get yourself to Saint Remy de Provence, most likely from Paris or Marseille. From the end of your walk, you will need to organise your travel away from Antibes. To make it easy we have collated some useful information that will assist you in making arrangements for your travel.

By plane: The easiest option would be to fly into Paris and then catch the TGV train to Avignon or fly into Marseille and catch the local train from the airport to Avignon. There are many airlines that fly to Paris and Marseille. Below are possible websites that provide a number of different carriers to choose from.

By train or bus: The train from Paris to Avignon will take around 3-4hrs and will cost around AUD$100-200, depending on supply and demand. Alternatively, you can catch the train from Marseille to Avignon, which will take 1.5hrs and cost around AUD$30. You can then catch a 30 minute accessible bus to Saint Remy. Travelling from the End of the walk

By train: You can catch a train Arles back to Marseille which takes 1hr and costs around AUD$30. You could also catch the train back to Paris which takes around 4hrs.

WALKING

The walk is easy with little ascents, with full-day walks averaging about 11.7km. We highly recommend that you incorporate some extra time after the walk to rest but also to fully immerse yourself in the natural beauty, savoring sweeping views from the snow-dusted peaks of the Provincial Alps to the deep blue of the Mediterranean Sea, while treating your palate to exquisite French fare and wine.

WEATHER

From March the temperature begins to rise so be prepared for warmer days if you walk in summer. Shoulder season is by far the best time as the weather is perfect for walking and the added advantage of having fewer people around in the villages and on the coast (we walk away from the populated areas on the walk so crowds are not an issue.)

The walk does not take place in July and August due to risk of fire closures.

INSURANCE

We require that you have adequate travel insurance against potential losses, damage or injury, including cancellation costs and loss of luggage.

For all trips that require international travel, you must have purchased travel insurance that also includes medical evacuation coverage.

By plane: The easiest option would be to fly into Paris and then catch the TGV train to Avignon or fly into Marseille and catch the local train from the airport to Avignon. There are many airlines that fly to Paris and Marseille. Below are possible websites that provide a number of different carriers to choose from.

By train or bus: The train from Paris to Avignon will take around 3-4hrs and will cost around AUD$100-200, depending on supply and demand. Alternatively, you can catch the train from Marseille to Avignon, which will take 1.5hrs and cost around AUD$30. You can then catch a 30 minute accessible bus to Saint Remy. Travelling from the End of the walk

By train: You can catch a train Arles back to Marseille which takes 1hr and costs around AUD$30. You could also catch the train back to Paris which takes around 4hrs.

WALKING

The walk is easy with little ascents, with full-day walks averaging about 11.7km. We highly recommend that you incorporate some extra time after the walk to rest but also to fully immerse yourself in the natural beauty, savoring sweeping views from the snow-dusted peaks of the Provincial Alps to the deep blue of the Mediterranean Sea, while treating your palate to exquisite French fare and wine.

WEATHER

From March the temperature begins to rise so be prepared for warmer days if you walk in summer. Shoulder season is by far the best time as the weather is perfect for walking and the added advantage of having fewer people around in the villages and on the coast (we walk away from the populated areas on the walk so crowds are not an issue.)

The walk does not take place in July and August due to risk of fire closures.

INSURANCE

We require that you have adequate travel insurance against potential losses, damage or injury, including cancellation costs and loss of luggage.

For all trips that require international travel, you must have purchased travel insurance that also includes medical evacuation coverage.

We also charge a cancellation fee if you cancel your walking holiday after we have confirmed it to cover costs incurred from our suppliers and in the office.  See the FAQ section for more information.
