DAY 2
REVELLATA LIGHTHOUSE OR NOTRE DAME DE SERRA OR CAPU DI VETA

You can choose from three different loop hikes. Today there is no challenging option available.

REVELLATA LIGHTHOUSE

Today’s walk leads you along the scenic Sentier du Littoral. The path winds along the rugged coastline, offering stunning views of the bar rock and jagged shoreline. Explore the peninsula and its hidden beaches, ideal for a refreshing swim. After completing the loop around Point de la Revellata, you will return to the same spot.  You can admire the Mediterranean and the surrounding mountains from the Revellata Lighthouse. Then, follow a path atop the peninsula back to Calvi

Walking: Moderate / 15km / 4-5 hrs / +220m / -220m

NOTRE DAME DE SERRA & CAPU DI VETA (2 options)

Today, you’ll venture away from the coast to Notre Dame de Serra, a stunning hilltop chapel boasting magnificent vistas of Calvi Bay, its citadel, and the Reginu Valley. The mostly easy path winds through Corsican scrub, with intermittent rocky sections, leading you to the Notre Dame de la Serra chapel. Although the original sanctuary was destroyed in 1740, a new chapel was erected in the 19th century. Admire the large statue of Notre Dame de la Serra perched atop a rock before returning to Calvi. For a more challenging option, embark on a sun-exposed and rocky trail leading to the highest point above Calvi, the Austrian cross “Capu di Veta.” This exhilarating hike offers incredible panoramic views, though some terrain is rocky with steep steps and one short traverse passage aided by a chain (though not necessary)

Walking: Moderate or Challenging / 9km or 15km / 3hrs or 5.5hrs / +/-250m or +/-720m

Meals: Breakfast

Accommodation: Calvi

DAY 3
JOURNEY TO CORTE

Today, you’ll depart from the sandy shores and journey inland towards the mountains and the historic capital of Corte. You have two transfer options (which you must pay for yourself)

1- Recommended: Take a memorable 2.5-hour journey aboard the renowned Michelin train, winding from the sandy beaches to the mountains, with tickets priced around 25-30€. No visit to Corsica is complete without experiencing the Micheline train, celebrated for its unique charm

2- Opt for a 1.5hr private taxi  transfer, starting from 240€ on weekdays and 250€ on Sundays and Bank Holidays (availability permitting). Upon arrival at the Corte train station, it’s a 20 minute stroll to reach your centrally located hotel. Nestled at the foot of several valleys and adorned with its citadel, Corte is the island’s historic capital and a bastion of Corsican language and culture preservation efforts

If you arrive early in Corte, you can go for an OPTIONAL HIKE through Gorges Tavignano.

Embark on your hike from Corte on foot, immersing yourself in the wilderness near the city center. The path is consistently easy to navigate, mostly cobbled, with gentle terrain and no steep ascents or descents. Following the “Mare a Mare” trail along the left bank of the Tavignano river, the scenery grows increasingly dramatic as you delve deeper into the gorge. As the hike concludes, the path descends to a footbridge spanning the river, where a natural pool awaits for a refreshing swim. Return along the same path and spend the night in Corte. Note that July & August are very hot and there is not much shade. You can also continue on the Mare to Mare path beyond the bridge if you want to extend the walk

Walking: Moderate / 13km / 4.5hrs / +350m / -350m

Meals: Breakfast

Accommodation: Corte

DAY 4
Circular Hikes from Corte

Circular Hike from Corte to Punti di u Corbu

This loop walk kicks off in the heart of Corte and honours Saint Teoflu, the only saint to hail from Corsica. Born in Corte on 30 October 1740, he remains a notable figure in the region. The hike takes you up to the Punti di u Corbu Pass, where you’re rewarded with sweeping views of Corte, the dramatic Restonica Valley, and glimpses of the sea stretching out to the east.

Walk:  3.5 hours / 10 km / Elevation: +/-530m

You have two other hike options that start outside of Corte and to get there you’ll be asked to book a public shuttle bus via an application. This public bus runs from May to September. If you are travelling before May & after September we can book a taxi with an additional supplement.

Riviseccu Valley Hike

This hidden gem of a walk takes you into the wild Riviseccu Valley – a little-known spot that’s well off the tourist track. The trail winds through spectacular scenery, including the Riviseccu sheepfolds and the stunning Lariccio pine forests. The sheepfolds, beautifully restored and forming a small, charming hamlet, mark the end of the forest estate. Surrounded by rugged rock formations and the crystal-clear Riviseccu stream, it’s a magical part of Corsica to explore.

Walk:  4.5 hours / 13 km / Elevation: +/-600m

Lac di Melo and Lac di Capitello Hike

Starting from the Bergerie de la Grotelle, a well-known shepherd’s hut sitting at 1,370m, this walk takes you up a steady, rocky path through a dramatic valley to the serene Lac di Melo. This peaceful alpine lake is a perfect spot for a break or a picnic lunch, with plenty of quiet places to settle in and enjoy the views. If you’re up for more, you can continue the climb to Lac di Capitello, which sits higher and offers even more breathtaking scenery.

Walk: Moderate or Challenging / 15km or 17km / 5hrs or 6.5hrs / +/-330m or +/-550m

Meals: Breakfast

Accommodation: Corte

DAY 5
WALK FROM COL DE VERGIO TO EVISA OR TRANSFER TO PORTO

After brekkie, there’s a 1 hour 15-minute transfer to the start of your walk (or you can skip the hike and head straight to Porto). Sitting at close to 1,500m above sea level, the Col de Vergio is Corsica’s highest road pass. From here, it’s mostly downhill as you wind your way through a spectacular chestnut forest before arriving in the charming mountain village of Evisa. It’s the perfect spot to grab a drink or a snack and soak up the relaxed vibe before a short 30-minute transfer to Porto. You’ll spend the final two nights by the sea – a brilliant way to wrap up your trip.

Walking: Moderate  / 3.5hrs | 10 km| Elevation : +220/-800m

Meals: Breakfast

Accommodation: Porto

DAY 6
GIROLATA WALK

A hike along the coastline to a fishermen village accessible only by foot or boat. The stroll begins at the Col de la Croix pass, ~200 meters above sea level, and gradually descends along a partially shaded path tracing the coastline. This renowned route, known as the “Sentier du Facteur” or Mailman’s Path, was Guy the mailman’s daily route to deliver mail to the remote village of Girolata, accessible only by foot or boat. Following this path, you’ll pass by Tuara Beach for a secluded swim before continuing along the rocky coastline to Girolata, offering abundant dining options and a second opportunity to swim in the Mediterranean Sea. Returning in a loop via the “Mare e Monti” trail, you’ll then retrace your steps to the starting point at Col de la Croix

For the challenging trek originating from the village of Curzo, you’ll embark on a steep ascent to a breathtaking ridgeline, affording panoramic views of Corsica’s western coastline. Descending from the ridge to the Col de la Croix road pass, where the “Moderate level” walk commences, you’ll encounter steep and sun-exposed terrain. A transfer back to Porto concludes the journey

Walking: Moderate or Challenging / 9km or 17km / 4hrs or 5.5hrs / +50m/-600m or +1000m/-1000m

FITNESS GUIDE

It’s well worth investing some time and effort preparing for your walking holiday. The graph shows the average daily distance, elevation and terrain difficulty for your hike. The dotted line indicates the average across all our walks, which will give you a feel for how challenging your walk is compared to all – and the recommended type, and amount, of preparation needed.  Of course, you can adapt this according to your existing fitness levels and lifestyle.

The graph and the information below can be used in conjunction with the fitness guide to help you prepare for your walking adventure. Across all walks, average daily distance is 16.8km, average daily elevation is 448m, average terrain difficulty is 5/10.

ngraph

DISTANCE - BELOW AVERAGE

Distance is not a major consideration in your training program. However, you should still incorporate some long walks as it will increase your cardiovascular fitness.

ELEVATION - BELOW AVERAGE

Elevation is not a major consideration regarding how you train. However, you should still incorporate some form of resistance training as it will increase your endurance.

MIXED TERRAIN

ROCKY TERRAIN

Whilst preparing for walking on rocky terrain, you must focus on the development of balance, strength, and agility. Integrate targeted strength exercises, such as lunges, squats, and step-ups, to fortify your leg muscles, with a particular emphasis on enhancing stability on uneven surfaces. Balancing exercises are essential. Undertake core strength activity, coupled with exercises such as planks and russian twists to enhance balance. As you progress, include hikes on progressively rougher terrain to acclimate to rocky conditions. Additionally, the appropriate footwear with good ankle support and tread for grip are essential. Stay mindful, watch your step, and use trekking poles for added stability.

UNEVEN TERRAIN

Preparation for hiking on uneven terrain demands a nuanced blend of physical and mental readiness. Commence your regimen with balance-enhancing exercises, such as one-legged stands and stability ball workouts, laying a foundational groundwork for stability and coordination. Strengthening the lower body is pivotal, achieved through the incorporation of squats, lunges, and step-ups to enhance both stability and power. Gradually increase the complexity of the terrain on which you walk, moving from gravel paths to rocky trails. Cultivate mindfulness during your practice, directing focused attention to both your immediate surroundings and precise foot placement. The importance of suitable footwear cannot be overstated; prioritize options that offer robust support and reliable grip to navigate varying terrains with confidence. Build endurance through consistent hikes, progressively increasing distance and difficulty.

GENERAL INFO

AVAILABILITY

April through to October (before or after upon request). Possible snow early in the season in the mountains and very hot during summer. If a walk is not possible due to those reasons or any personal reasons, any extra charge due to modifications on the spot will be at an additional cost not covered by Auswalk.

HOW TO GET THERE AND

Travelling to the Start of the walk

The walk starts in Calvi at your first accommodation and ends in Porto. Please refer to your itinerary. You will need to get yourself to Calvi. There are regular Aircorsica flights to Corsica from Paris, Nice and Marseille or you could opt for a ferry from Nice, Marseille or La Ciotat. You can also arrive in Bastia and catch a train via Ponte Leccia. From the end of your walk, you will need to organise your travel away from Porto. To make it easy we have collated some useful information that will assist you in making arrangements for your travel.

By plane: The easiest option would be to fly into Paris, Marseille or Nice and then fly into Calvi. There are many airlines that fly these routes. Below are possible websites that provide a number of different carriers to choose from.

https://www.kayak.com/flights

http://www.google.com/flights

By train: The train from Bastia to Calvi will take around 4.25hrs and will cost around AUD$29-41. Please find below ways to book.

https://www.thetrainline.com/en/train-times

https://en.oui.sncf/en/tgv

By bus: You can also travel by bus from Bastia to Calvi, which will take around 2hrs and cost AUD$23-50, depending on supply and demand. Please find below ways to book.

https://www.rome2rio.com/map/Bastia/Calvi

Travelling from the End of the walk

By bus: The bus from Porto back to Calvi takes around 2.5hrs. You can then travel via ferry or plane back to the mainland.

https://www.rome2rio.com/

By plane: There are regular flights and low-cost airlines from Calvi, Ajaccio and Bastia to Paris, Nice or Marseille.

WALKING

The walk is moderate + walk. Walks average 12.5km with 600m of elevation each day, which takes around 5 hours. Due to rocky terrain, some trails can be more rocky than others, and therefore may take some time to walk if you are not used to this type of terrain. We do our best to calculate a fair estimation of the walk, the indicated walking time is based on no rest, no stop, no picnic, this time can vary according to walking abilities.

There are many opportunities to add more walking if you’re up for it. If you choose the challenging options you must have hiking experience and can negotiate rocky, technical terrain. You don’t mind a little scrambling along the way and you must be confident at orienteering and using a compass.

This is a beautiful area with many fabulous historic attractions on top of the fabulous walking routes, with an overarching mountainous and uneven/rocky terrain. We highly recommend that you include the extension day at the end of the walk, which provides a unique opportunity to walk the Calanche de Piana, a World Heritage site.

For what to bring please refer to Gear Advice in our FAQ section.

EXTRA WALK OPTIONS DAY 8

The walks start with a short transfer to Piana.

Option 1 – Moderate: Piana to the Calanches

4 hours | 10.5 km | Ascent: +500m | Descent: -475m

Kick things off in the village of Piana, a place that’s earned its spot among the most beautiful villages in France. Take a bit of time to wander the charming streets before hitting the trail. The walk follows an old mule track that hugs the cliffs high above the sea, offering jaw-dropping views of the Calanches de Piana. These blood-red granite spires soar straight out of the coastline, towering hundreds of metres into the sky – a surreal sight carved by centuries of wind and water. The trail weaves right through the heart of these rugged formations. You’ll finish the walk at a spot with a café or restaurant, perfect for a well-earned drink or bite to eat, before transferring back to Porto.

Option 2 – Challenging: Capu d’Orto Summit

6 hours | 15 km | Ascent: +900m | Descent: -875m

For those keen to tackle the summit of Capu d’Orto, this one’s a cracker. The trail leaves the forest behind pretty quickly and gives way to bare rock, where the views just get better with every step. It’s a tough, steep climb in the sun, but the payoff is next level – at 1,300m and just 3km from the coast, Capu d’Orto dishes up some of the best 360° views of Corsica’s west coast. If you’re not up for the full climb, no worries – the return trail sticks to a scenic ridge with stunning sea views before dropping into an ancient chestnut forest. Either way, you’ll finish at a café or restaurant, where you can kick back before transferring back to Porto.

Please speak to the office if you wish to take up this option.

WEATHER

From March the temperature begins to rise so be prepared for warmer days if you walk in summer. Shoulder season is by far the best time as the weather is perfect for walking and the added advantage of having fewer people around in the villages and on the coast (we walk away from the populated areas on the walk so crowds are not an issue).

In June, July and August the hikes should be completed early, especially the ones in Calvi & Tavignano gorge. At the end of March/April and October/November, there is a risk of snow fall in Corte (mountain Lakes).

See the weather information about average temperatures and rainfall at different times of the year.

INSURANCE

We require that you have adequate travel insurance against potential losses, damage or injury, including cancellation costs and loss of luggage.

For all trips that require international travel, you must have purchased travel insurance that also includes medical evacuation coverage.

We also charge a cancellation fee if you cancel your walking holiday after we have confirmed it to cover costs incurred from our suppliers and in the office.  See the FAQ section for more information.

INFORMATION PACK

For nearly 30 years we have taken pride in providing seamlessly organised walking holidays, but we know, even with that in mind, that you’ll have many more questions. You will receive a very detailed information pack and itinerary approximately 6 weeks out from departure outlining all the fine detail and much more.

Meals: Breakfast

Accommodation: Porto

Fitness Guide

Below are possible websites that provide a number of different carriers to choose from.

http://www.google.com/flights

By train: The train from Bastia to Calvi will take around 4.25hrs and will cost around AUD$29-41. Please find below ways to book.

By bus: You can also travel by bus from Bastia to Calvi, which will take around 2hrs and cost AUD$23-50, depending on supply and demand. Please find below ways to book.

Travelling from the End of the walk

By bus: The bus from Porto back to Calvi takes around 2.5hrs. You can then travel via ferry or plane back to the mainland.
