Auswalk’s Great South West Walk is a group guided accommodated walking holiday. Note that we also offer a self guided trip on a similar itinerary.

This has got to be Victoria’s best kept secret – a 250km continuous loop track that includes dramatic coastlines, the joy of walking beside a meandering river and remote bushland full of wildlife, bird and native flowers.

This walk is promoted as a “Symphony in Four Movements” which are depicted beautifully in this magnificent video of the walk.

More on what you'll see

We’ve selected the highlights of the track to give you an overview of what this track has to offer.

First comes the peaceful Glenelg River, a haven for walkers, fishermen and canoeists. The river widens as it nears the coast and then carves its way through a spectacular limestone gorge.Onto the pristine sandy beaches and rocky outcrops of Discovery Bay Coastal Park and freshwater lakes that offer great swimming.

The grand finale is the Three Capes and Bays section where the track hugs the cliff top all the way. These rugged, wave-bashed headlands are perfect for whale spotting in season and the colony of Australian fur seals at Cape Bridgewater is there year-round. The coast offers blowholes, a “Petrified Forest” and an “Enchanted Walk” where vines of bower spinach are decoratively draped over limestone boulders and twisted moonah trees.

As well as all of that, on the first day, as we travel to the region, we’ll enjoy a two hour hike at Tower Hill. This walk takes you around the rim of an ancient volcanic crater and provides an excellent opportunity to see koalas, emus and other wildlife in the wild.

And, in the middle of the week, we’ll take a break from the track and explore the crystal clear waters of Piccaninnie Ponds and do some short walks at nearby Mt Gambier. Blue Lake is sure to be a highlight.

Traveller’s Tales

Karen Blake – November 2016, Great South West Walk

Yet another fabulous trip with Auswalk, my 10th.
Their attention to detail and logistics for each trip is amazing, leaving the walkers to enjoy every moment of their walking holiday.
The best parts of the Great South West walk were included in this trip giving variety of habitat and scenery for each day’s walk.
Opportunities were provided to see some of the other interesting destinations, attractions and wildlife around the area as well.
Good company with like-minded people, good food, very comfortable accommodation and great guides to round off a fantastic experience. Thanks Auswalk.

Lynne de Graaf – November 2016, Great South West Walk

We were inspired by our travelling companions as they were all dedicated experienced walkers.
It is a unique experience when we are able to spend a week with interesting well travelled walkers who share their experiences and give insights into why they love trekking.
Our guides Brett and Bill encouraged and guided us with a sense of humour and personal interest in each of us.
Their passion and love for their work was constantly evident. Thank you Brett and Bill and the AusWalks company.

Andrew Venturato – November 2015, Great South West Walk

Martin and Kay Staples – November 2016, Great South West Walk

Thank you for an amazing week..great walking in a small enough group where we all got to know each other very well.
The B & B accommodation was an unexpected delight.
Lisa and Bill did a wonderful job of leading us up and down the south west and making it one of the most memorable weeks we have had.
Great job Auswalk!

Sue Dale – November 2015, Great South West Walk, United Kingdom

Despite being on the other side of the world all my queries and questions were sorted promptly and fully by office staff. Nothing seemed too much trouble or any question too trivial. Even a problem with a payment was treated as though there was nothing to worry about. Thank you for making the process so painless! It also made such a difference to have contact with same people, a very personal experience and not one of many enquiries dealt with by lots of different staff. I cannot find fault with anything! The group was lovely, all like minded people and easy to get on with. The length of walk was just right for me too.

Our guides were wonderful. They had a good breadth of knowledge of flora, fauna & history of the areas we travelled. Their sense of humour and fun was brilliant and so important on such a trip. They were very sensitive to any needs that we had and nothing appeared to be too much trouble for them. They really looked after us and made sure we all had a good time and that everything went smoothly. I can’t thank enough for everything they did to give us such a super holiday.

Particularly loved the accommodations, they were so unique & quirky! You also met the owners and felt so at home and welcomed. I would rather have that type of accommodation than the posher hotel rooms as they are more clinical and you can stay in something like that anytime. I prefer to support the individual rather than a chain. My vegetarian needs were really well catered for and I usually had a choice of menu. If that situation Just a big ‘thank you’ again for making the trip so wonderful and I am sure I will be travelling with Auswalk in the future.
