  • Day 3
  • Day 4

DAY 1
ARRIVAL AND GRAND CLIFFTOP WALK

The best way to arrive in the mountains is by 2 hr train journey which leave regularly from Central Station. The Katoomba train station is a short 60 m walk from the hotel.  Your guide will meet you at your accommodation. We would like you to arrive by 11.00 am so we can fit in all of today’s stunning walk, which is a great introduction to the region. It includes marvellous views over the Valley and ends at the Three Sisters. If you are up to it, we can also add on the Giant Stairway, so you can see the 3 Sisters right up close.

You will have time to explore Katoomba at the end of the day. Please speak to the office and let us know your arrival time.

Meals: A la carte two-course dinner

Accommodation: The Carrington in ensuite rooms

DAY 2
SKYWAY, SCENIC RAILWAY AND RUINED CASTLE OR GRAND CANYON

The morning will begin with a walk from our accommodation to the Skyway East Station. From here, catch the Scenic World Skyway over to the Scenic World Top Station. From there you will have a choice to either take the Scenic Railway (the steepest incline railway in the world) or Scenic Cableway (the steepest aerial cable car in the Southern Hemisphere) down to the valley floor to begin the walk. Either of these options will take you on an exhilarating ride into the depths of the Jamison Valley rainforest, passing relics left by coal miners over 100 years ago. Look for the elusive ground-dwelling lyrebird and sip crystal clear water from Marrangaroo Spring. As you make your way to Leura, enjoy lunch among a flock of cheeky currawongs or rosella parrots after scrambling up past apple, peppermint, and bloodwood trees.

If Ruined Castle is closed we take the Grand Canyon walk.

Walks: Mostly easy walking except for crossing the old landslide, which is moderate / 10km / 4-5 hrs

Meals: Cooked breakfast, lunch and a la carte dinner

Accommodation: The Carrington in ensuite rooms

DAY 3
VALLEY OF THE WATERS AND WENTWORTH FALLS AND GRAND CLIFF TOP WALK

The setting for the grand finale is Wentworth Falls, the Jamison Valley and the Valley of the Waters. This historic route and one of the most iconic of all the Blue Mountain walks, winds its way alongside waterfalls, beneath overhanging cliffs and through magnificent grottoes. The first section of the walk is concentrated on Wentworth Falls. At the bottom of the falls we’ll stop and admire the view, experience the refreshing mist and sip morning tea. Expect to eat lunch at the Valley of the Waters.

The real highlight is the ‘midcliff’ walk along a wide path that has been carved into the sheer cliff face. Handrails, ladders and airy lookouts provide a birds-eye view over countless hectares of forest. We can shorten this walk so you can leave the mountains earlier and return to Sydney if necessary. Plan to arrive in Sydney after 5.30pm

Walks: Most of the walk is reasonably easy and well-graded; the rest involves steep ups and downs, including steps and ladders / 10-15 km / 3-4 hrs

Meals: Cooked breakfast prepared by the in-house chefs, walkers lunch and a la carte dinner

Accommodation: The Carrington in ensuite rooms

DAY 4
SIX FOOT TRACK

Today’s walk is one of our favourites. We can walk straight from our accommodation to where the old Explorers Tree used to be, the track then winds its’ way down the escarpment into Megalong Valley. On the way be treated with superb views over the valley. The Six Foot Track was originally built 2 metres (six-foot!) wide, in 1884 to provide access to Jenolan Caves by horse. The route was swiftly renamed the Six Foot Track, and the name has stuck. The way down to the valley is by far the best part of the Six Foot Track.

We’ll then transfer you back to Katoomba after our hike where we will end our tour.

Walking: Moderate 11km  / 4hrs/ mostly downhill or flat

Meals: Cooked breakfast and walkers lunch.

The a la carte dinners are at excellent local restaurants, including one night at the Carrington. Alcohol or drinks with meals are not included (except tea/coffee and juice with breakfast).

FITNESS GUIDE

It’s well worth investing some time and effort preparing for your walking holiday. The graph shows the average daily distance, elevation and terrain difficulty for your hike. The dotted line indicates the average across all our walks, which will give you a feel for how challenging your walk is compared to all – and the recommended type, and amount, of preparation needed.  Of course, you can adapt this according to your existing fitness levels and lifestyle.

The graph and the information below can be used in conjunction with the fitness guide to help you prepare for your walking adventure. Across all walks, average daily distance is 16.8km, average daily elevation is 448m, average terrain difficulty is 5/10.

ngraph

DISTANCE - BELOW AVERAGE

Distance is not a major consideration in your training program. However, you should still incorporate some long walks as it will increase your cardiovascular fitness.

ELEVATION - ~AVERAGE

Elevation training should be a consideration in your overall training program.

Try to include some form of elevation in more than 40% of your walking and prioritise resistance training, whilst incorporating stairs anytime you can. Walking up and down stairs at work, at a local oval with a grandstand or up and down small hills is incredibly useful. Elevation is often where walkers encounter problems, opposed to distance, as it uses an entirely different set of muscles to everyday flat walking.

Ensure you can comfortably walk the average elevation per day displayed in the graph, at least one month before you undertake your hike.

MOUNTAINOUS / UNDULATING TERRAIN

As terrain associated with mountain climbs is often somewhat uneven and rocky, balancing and core exercises are vital.

Try to also include some form of elevation in more than 50% of your walking and prioritise resistance training, whilst incorporating stairs anytime you can. Walking up mountains or hills, up and down stairs at work, or up and down at a local oval with a grandstand is incredibly useful. Elevation is often where walkers encounter problems not distance, as it uses an entirely different set of muscles to everyday flat walking. Concentrate on doing lots of squats and lunges to build your glute muscles.

GENERAL INFO

The Blue Mountains walks are 45% easy, 35% moderate, 20% more challenging. 10-17.5km (3 – 6.5 hours) walking each day on mostly well-formed and well graded walking tracks.

This trip operates with an experienced and knowledgeable guide. For what to bring, please refer to Gear Advice on our FAQ section.

The trip starts and ends in Katoomba.

Taking the public transport train from Sydney Central Station to Katoomba and on the return is by far the best option.

WEATHER

October-November is usually mild to warm. Temperatures warm up from December to February. March-April is usually cool to mild. Temperatures drop from May onwards, and the days are cool to cold. July brings occasional snowfalls. Warmer spring weather returns around September.

See the Bureau of Meteorology for information about temperatures and rainfall ahead of time to ensure proper clothing.
