The Flinders Island walks are so breathtakingly gorgeous it's a wonder that this place remains so unknown. There are serene river estuaries and picturesque inlets. And there’s an opportunity to climb the highest peak on the island Mt Strzelecki as well as several smaller peaks. Wildlife abounds too; numerous wallabies (far too many for the locals!), huge Cape Barren geese, wild peacocks, pheasants, birds of prey and large numbers of seabirds roam unfettered all over the island.

We take care of every last detail so you can relax and fully experience this amazing place on foot. At night freshen up and settle in at your comfortable accommodation. The chef prepared breakfasts and dinners make indulgent bookends to each day.

DAY 1
ARRIVAL: FLINDERS ISLAND

This Flinders Island tour commences on Flinders Island and we’ll meet you at the airport. Flights to the island leave from Essendon (near Melbourne airport) or Launceston (in Tasmania) via Sharp Airlines.

As you approach the rugged Furneaux Group of islands, Flinders Island looks like a motley collection of jumbled mountains jutting out of the sea. It’s 75 km long and 40 km wide with a population of only 850 people. As well as tall peaks, sea cliffs and idyllic coves, much of the central part of the island is covered in lush green farmland and glorious national parks.

This afternoon, we will endeavour to do a short walk – the Trousers Point Circuit (subject to flight arrival times).

DAY 2
SETTLEMENT POINT, SAWYERS BAY AND CASTLE ROCK

On today’s Flinders Island walk we’ll explore the historic Settlement Point area on the west coast of the island.

The walking starts at picturesque Sawyers Bay, with some boulder hopping and beach walking. An historic jetty with a magnificent backdrop of the Strzelecki Ranges will have cameras working overtime. We go hiking across the peninsula then along the beach to Castle Rock, a massive granite boulder standing over 15 metres high.

On a visit to the Furneaux Historical Museum we’ll learn about Wybalenna, one of the most important Aboriginal historic sites in Australia. It was here in the 1930s that the Tasmanian government resettled what it thought to be the remaining Tasmanian Aboriginal people. At the museum you’ll also learn about early sailors and sealers, the early settlers and the amazing present-day mutton birders.

DAY 3
KILLIECRANKIE BEACH VIA STACKY'S BIGHT TO OLD MAN'S HEAD

Still on the west side of the island, we head further north today to Mount Killiecrankie. Today’s stunning coastal hike hugs the rocky shores from The Dock to the sleepy fishing settlement of Killiecrankie where we can search for white topaz stones the locals call Killiecrankie diamonds. Orange lichen decorates the granite boulders and the azure blue water beckons swimmers at Stacky’s Bight. Old Man’s Head, a unique rock formation, dominates the southern section of the hike. Finish the afternoon with a peaceful beach walk.

DAY 4
MOUNT PILLINGER AND THE DARLING RANGE WALK

Today’s hike is in the Darling Range in the central part of the island. Starting at aptly named Walkers Lookout, we traverse a high ridge that offers excellent views in all directions. For fit walkers with a good head for heights there’s an optional ascent of atmospheric Mount Pillinger – known to locals as the Gin Bottle.

Walks: Moderate / 12 km / 5-6 hrs / shorter/easier option available

DAY 5
BIG RIVER TO BADGER CORNER

This mostly flat walk allows you to view the spectacular Franklin Sound with the backdrop of Cape Barren Island. The day will finish with a visit to the local Unavale winery.

Walks: Moderate / 12 km / 4-5 hrs

DAY 6
MOUNT STRZELECKI WALK

The highlight for many will be the challenging ascent of Mount Strzelecki, named after Sir Paul Edmund de Strzelecki who explored many parts of Australia in the 1800s. He’s well known for being the first European to climb Mount Kosciuszko – Australia’s highest mountain. The track climbs up through the rugged Fotheringate Creek Valley where there are waterfalls and a delightful fern gully. As you climb higher the vegetation changes to sub alpine and finally you reach the bouldery summit. At 756 metres, you are on the highest point on the island.

It’s well worth investing some time and effort preparing for your walking holiday. The graph shows the average daily distance, elevation and terrain difficulty for your hike. The dotted line indicates the average across all our walks, which will give you a feel for how challenging your walk is compared to all – and the recommended type, and amount, of preparation needed.  Of course, you can adapt this according to your existing fitness levels and lifestyle.

TERRAIN

UNEVEN TERRAIN

Preparation for hiking on uneven terrain demands a blend of physical and mental readiness.

Begin with balance-enhancing exercises, such as one-legged stands and stability ball workouts, laying a groundwork for stability and coordination. Strengthening the lower body is especially important, achieved through the incorporation of squats, lunges, and step-ups. Gradually increase the complexity of the terrain on which you walk, moving from gravel paths to rocky trails. Cultivate mindfulness during your practice, directing focused attention to both your immediate surroundings and precise foot placement.

The importance of suitable footwear cannot be overstated; prioritise options that offer robust support and reliable grip to navigate varying terrains with confidence. Build endurance through consistent hikes, progressively increasing distance and difficulty.

MOUNTAINOUS / UNDULATING TERRAIN

As terrain associated with mountain climbs is often somewhat uneven and rocky, balancing and core exercises are vital.

Try to also include some form of elevation in more than 50% of your walking and prioritise resistance training, whilst incorporating stairs anytime you can. Walking up mountains or hills, up and down stairs at work, or up and down at a local oval with a grandstand is incredibly useful. Elevation is often where walkers encounter problems not distance, as it uses an entirely different set of muscles to everyday flat walking. Concentrate on doing lots of squats and lunges to build your glute muscles.

The island is 75km long and 40km wide. It sits in the middle of Bass Strait and is accessible by plane from either Melbourne or Launceston in Tasmania. The tracks on the Flinders Island walks vary in quality but all are easily navigable. There are well formed tracks and sections where your local guides will have you pick your way along rocky shorelines and sandy beaches. There are some opportunities for fit walkers to challenge themselves but the main walks are all easy to moderate, with the only exception being Mt Strzelecki. This trip operates with two knowledgeable, engaging guides so we can offer easier and harder walk options along the way.

WEATHER

Flinders Island has a temperate coastal climate that is suitable for walking at every time of the year except the winter months. Summer weather is mild compared with most of Australia, and winters never have frost. No wonder locals wouldn’t live anywhere else.

See the Bureau of Meteorology for information about temperatures and rainfall ahead of time to ensure proper clothing.

INSURANCE

We require that you have adequate travel insurance against potential losses, damage or injury, including cancellation costs and loss of luggage.

For all trips that require international travel, you must have purchased travel insurance that also includes medical evacuation coverage.

    Delightful guides, beautiful scenery, great food. We were pleased to meet up with David and Kathleen again. They were understanding, flexible and went above and beyond to make sure we enjoyed the Flinder’s Is experience. Liked the way they provided two options for the walks.     Dave & Kathleen were terrific! They were very accommodating, considerate and helpful and made sure that we all got the best out of the walks, tailoring them to our different capabilities. It was also great to have guides in a similar age group to me (for a change). The walks were very varied and the guides’ knowledge of the island was a great bonus, making them so much more interesting. The extra-curricular activities were a joy: the wombat sanctuary and the visit to the vineyard – an unexpected bonus.

    Another excellent Auswalk hike. Nothing was too much trouble for local guides David and Kathleen. From the early morning airport pickup until the late afternoon drop off, they were always available, warm and welcoming. They both clearly love the island and made sure we left with a genuine understanding of the history of the area. Tassie weather was kind us, warm, no rain and not much wind. The seven day itinerary meant hiking days could be swapped around depending on the weather. Two highlights were the Mount Strzelecki hike, hard going up, harder coming down and an afternoon swim at Allports Beach.
    A quiet unspoilt Island well worth visiting.

    As usual Auswalk’s organisation was top-class. The walking was a variety of coastal and on beach walks with brilliant contrast of white sand, blue water and orange lichen covered boulders, and mountains with great views and interesting vegetation and boulders beside the tracks. The very challenging Strzelecki Peaks was well managed by our guides to enable every one to make it as far as they could – done in a thoughtful and caring manner. The skill, knowledge and friendliness of the guides really makes Auswalk standout as a company to walk and holiday with – thanks Marie.
    Accommodation and meals were top class – well done Annie.

    From the top of Mt Strzelecki to the coastal white sandy beaches, this is one of the best walking holidays ever ! AusWalk staff helpful and fun. Accommodation fab and organic food was an unexpected highlight. Highly recommend.

    This was a great trip, staying in an eco lodge, with a stunning chef. The walks were varied, and the guides knowledgeable and had an easy yet professional rapport with the group. Nothing was too much trouble. Just be aware the accommodation has varying sized rooms.

    One of Australia’s best kept secrets. Accommodation, guides, walks are a credit to Auswalk. This was our 4th walk with them and have never been disappointed. This would have to be a dream walk for anyone but don’t think it’s glamping because there are some challenging options if you want. So go to Flinders with Auswalk before the rest of the world discover it.

    We’ve done one guided walk (Flinders Island) and two self-guided (WA Cape to Cape and Victoria’s Great SW Walk) with Auswalk in the last 5 years. Each time we’ve had a wonderful experience – fantastic walking, memorable accommodation and hosts, and (mostly) great food. The folks at Auswalk pay huge attention to detail when organising trips and when writing notes for the self-guided walks. With the understandable disclaimer that the remoteness of some locations limits the choices for accommodation and meals, they clearly make an effort to pamper walkers at the start and end of each day.

    Our recent Great SW Walk was the shorter version – about half of the 250 km total. We began and ended in Portland, with much of the initial forest section omitted, but most of the beautiful river sections and spectacular coastal sections included. Auswalk were happy to accommodate our request for 7 rather than 6 days’ walking, which allowed us to spread out the unusually long first two days (~27 km each) to three days of ~20, 14 and 20 km – a much more pleasant way to begin, allowing us to enjoy each day without pressure.

    As for accommodation on the GSWW – the beautifully renovated Lorelei B&B in Portland (built in 1915 as a doctor’s home / office), was a particular favourite. Roger was an excellent and generous host offering an amazing breakfast and complimentary wine, beer and nibbles each evening. We loved sitting in the bay window looking out at the rose garden, sipping a glass of sparkling wine before dinner. We also had a memorable stay at the Nelson Cottage B&B, where our room used to be a police station (built in 1885 and comfortably updated), and where we greatly enjoyed John & Trish’s warm hospitality. John’s extensive knowledge of the area was a bonus.

    We frequently come to Australia from Canada to visit family. Each time we look forward to including another Auswalk in our plans. Based on our experience, we recommend Auswalk without reservation.

The Flinders Island walks are so breathtakingly gorgeous it's a wonder that this place remains so unknown. There are serene river estuaries and picturesque inlets. And there’s an opportunity to climb the highest peak on the island Mt Strzelecki as well as several smaller peaks. Wildlife abounds too; numerous wallabies (far too many for the locals!), huge Cape Barren geese, wild peacocks, pheasants, birds of prey and large numbers of seabirds roam unfettered all over the island.

We take care of every last detail so you can relax and fully experience this amazing place on foot. At night freshen up and settle in at your comfortable accommodation. The chef prepared breakfasts and dinners make indulgent bookends to each day.

DAY 1
ARRIVAL: FLINDERS ISLAND

This Flinders Island tour commences on Flinders Island and we’ll meet you at the airport. Flights to the island leave from Essendon (near Melbourne airport) or Launceston (in Tasmania) via Sharp Airlines.

As you approach the rugged Furneaux Group of islands, Flinders Island looks like a motley collection of jumbled mountains jutting out of the sea. It’s 75 km long and 40 km wide with a population of only 850 people. As well as tall peaks, sea cliffs and idyllic coves, much of the central part of the island is covered in lush green farmland and glorious national parks.

This afternoon, we will endeavour to do a short walk – the Trousers Point Circuit (subject to flight arrival times).

DAY 2
SETTLEMENT POINT, SAWYERS BAY AND CASTLE ROCK

On today’s Flinders Island walk we’ll explore the historic Settlement Point area on the west coast of the island.

The walking starts at picturesque Sawyers Bay, with some boulder hopping and beach walking. An historic jetty with a magnificent backdrop of the Strzelecki Ranges will have cameras working overtime. We go hiking across the peninsula then along the beach to Castle Rock, a massive granite boulder standing over 15 metres high.

On a visit to the Furneaux Historical Museum we’ll learn about Wybalenna, one of the most important Aboriginal historic sites in Australia. It was here in the 1930s that the Tasmanian government resettled what it thought to be the remaining Tasmanian Aboriginal people. At the museum you’ll also learn about early sailors and sealers, the early settlers and the amazing present-day mutton birders.

DAY 3
KILLIECRANKIE BEACH VIA STACKY'S BIGHT TO OLD MAN'S HEAD

Still on the west side of the island, we head further north today to Mount Killiecrankie. Today’s stunning coastal hike hugs the rocky shores from The Dock to the sleepy fishing settlement of Killiecrankie where we can search for white topaz stones the locals call Killiecrankie diamonds. Orange lichen decorates the granite boulders and the azure blue water beckons swimmers at Stacky’s Bight. Old Man’s Head, a unique rock formation, dominates the southern section of the hike. Finish the afternoon with a peaceful beach walk.

DAY 4
MOUNT PILLINGER AND THE DARLING RANGE WALK

Today’s hike is in the Darling Range in the central part of the island. Starting at aptly named Walkers Lookout, we traverse a high ridge that offers excellent views in all directions. For fit walkers with a good head for heights there’s an optional ascent of atmospheric Mount Pillinger – known to locals as the Gin Bottle.

Walks: Moderate / 12 km / 5-6 hrs / shorter/easier option available

DAY 5
BIG RIVER TO BADGER CORNER

This mostly flat walk allows you to view the spectacular Franklin Sound with the backdrop of Cape Barren Island. The day will finish with a visit to the local Unavale winery.

Walks: Moderate / 12 km / 4-5 hrs

DAY 6
MOUNT STRZELECKI WALK

The highlight for many will be the challenging ascent of Mount Strzelecki, named after Sir Paul Edmund de Strzelecki who explored many parts of Australia in the 1800s. He’s well known for being the first European to climb Mount Kosciuszko – Australia’s highest mountain. The track climbs up through the rugged Fotheringate Creek Valley where there are waterfalls and a delightful fern gully. As you climb higher the vegetation changes to sub alpine and finally you reach the bouldery summit. At 756 metres, you are on the highest point on the island.

The two-course dinners prepared at the lodge restaurant will focus on local fresh organic produce, as the 220-acre property is certified organic. Every day you will wake to an extensive breakfast to ready yourself for the upcoming days’ walk. You’ll lunch at incredible locations. Indeed, the walker’s lunches complete the circle ensuring that your appetite is always kept satisfied. Our walker’s lunches are substantial and will provide variety. Lunch is always augmented by Auswalk’s famous trail mix. We provide you with your own insulated lunch bag and a silicon collapsible tub for your convenience.

FITNESS GUIDE

It’s well worth investing some time and effort preparing for your walking holiday. The graph shows the average daily distance, elevation and terrain difficulty for your hike. The dotted line indicates the average across all our walks, which will give you a feel for how challenging your walk is compared to all – and the recommended type, and amount, of preparation needed.  Of course, you can adapt this according to your existing fitness levels and lifestyle.

The graph and the information below can be used in conjunction with the fitness guide to help you prepare for your walking adventure. Across all walks, average daily distance is 16.8km, average daily elevation is 448m, average terrain difficulty is 5/10.

TERRAIN

UNEVEN TERRAIN

Preparation for hiking on uneven terrain demands a blend of physical and mental readiness.

Begin with balance-enhancing exercises, such as one-legged stands and stability ball workouts, laying a groundwork for stability and coordination. Strengthening the lower body is especially important, achieved through the incorporation of squats, lunges, and step-ups. Gradually increase the complexity of the terrain on which you walk, moving from gravel paths to rocky trails. Cultivate mindfulness during your practice, directing focused attention to both your immediate surroundings and precise foot placement.

The importance of suitable footwear cannot be overstated; prioritise options that offer robust support and reliable grip to navigate varying terrains with confidence. Build endurance through consistent hikes, progressively increasing distance and difficulty.

MOUNTAINOUS / UNDULATING TERRAIN

As terrain associated with mountain climbs is often somewhat uneven and rocky, balancing and core exercises are vital.

Try to also include some form of elevation in more than 50% of your walking and prioritise resistance training, whilst incorporating stairs anytime you can. Walking up mountains or hills, up and down stairs at work, or up and down at a local oval with a grandstand is incredibly useful. Elevation is often where walkers encounter problems not distance, as it uses an entirely different set of muscles to everyday flat walking. Concentrate on doing lots of squats and lunges to build your glute muscles.

The island is 75km long and 40km wide. It sits in the middle of Bass Strait and is accessible by plane from either Melbourne or Launceston in Tasmania. We will meet you at the airport on the island on the first day and return you on the last day in plenty of time to catch your flight. This Flinders Island tour commences on Flinders Island and we’ll meet you at the airport. The tracks on the Flinders Island walks vary in quality but all are easily navigable. There are well formed tracks and sections where your local guides will have you pick your way along rocky shorelines and sandy beaches. There are some opportunities for fit walkers to challenge themselves but the main walks are all easy to moderate, with the only exception being Mt Strzelecki. This trip operates with two knowledgeable, engaging guides so we can offer easier and harder walk options along the way.

WEATHER

Flinders Island has a temperate coastal climate that is suitable for walking at every time of the year except the winter months. Summer weather is mild compared with most of Australia, and winters never have frost. No wonder locals wouldn’t live anywhere else.

See the Bureau of Meteorology for information about temperatures and rainfall ahead of time to ensure proper clothing.

INSURANCE

We require that you have adequate travel insurance against potential losses, damage or injury, including cancellation costs and loss of luggage.

For all trips that require international travel, you must have purchased travel insurance that also includes medical evacuation coverage.

We also charge a cancellation fee if you cancel your walking holiday after we have confirmed it to cover costs incurred from our suppliers and in the office.  See the FAQ section for more information.

    Delightful guides, beautiful scenery, great food. We were pleased to meet up with David and Kathleen again. They were understanding, flexible and went above and beyond to make sure we enjoyed the Flinder’s Is experience. Liked the way they provided two options for the walks.     Dave & Kathleen were terrific! They were very accommodating, considerate and helpful and made sure that we all got the best out of the walks, tailoring them to our different capabilities. It was also great to have guides in a similar age group to me (for a change). The walks were very varied and the guides’ knowledge of the island was a great bonus, making them so much more interesting. The extra-curricular activities were a joy: the wombat sanctuary and the visit to the vineyard – an unexpected bonus.

    Another excellent Auswalk hike. Nothing was too much trouble for local guides David and Kathleen. From the early morning airport pickup until the late afternoon drop off, they were always available, warm and welcoming. They both clearly love the island and made sure we left with a genuine understanding of the history of the area. Tassie weather was kind us, warm, no rain and not much wind. The seven day itinerary meant hiking days could be swapped around depending on the weather. Two highlights were the Mount Strzelecki hike, hard going up, harder coming down and an afternoon swim at Allports Beach.
    A quiet unspoilt Island well worth visiting.

    As usual Auswalk’s organisation was top-class. The walking was a variety of coastal and on beach walks with brilliant contrast of white sand, blue water and orange lichen covered boulders, and mountains with great views and interesting vegetation and boulders beside the tracks. The very challenging Strzelecki Peaks was well managed by our guides to enable every one to make it as far as they could – done in a thoughtful and caring manner. The skill, knowledge and friendliness of the guides really makes Auswalk standout as a company to walk and holiday with – thanks Marie.
    Accommodation and meals were top class – well done Annie.

    From the top of Mt Strzelecki to the coastal white sandy beaches, this is one of the best walking holidays ever ! AusWalk staff helpful and fun. Accommodation fab and organic food was an unexpected highlight. Highly recommend.

    This was a great trip, staying in an eco lodge, with a stunning chef. The walks were varied, and the guides knowledgeable and had an easy yet professional rapport with the group. Nothing was too much trouble. Just be aware the accommodation has varying sized rooms.

    One of Australia’s best kept secrets. Accommodation, guides, walks are a credit to Auswalk. This was our 4th walk with them and have never been disappointed. This would have to be a dream walk for anyone but don’t think it’s glamping because there are some challenging options if you want. So go to Flinders with Auswalk before the rest of the world discover it.

    We’ve done one guided walk (Flinders Island) and two self-guided (WA Cape to Cape and Victoria’s Great SW Walk) with Auswalk in the last 5 years. Each time we’ve had a wonderful experience – fantastic walking, memorable accommodation and hosts, and (mostly) great food. The folks at Auswalk pay huge attention to detail when organising trips and when writing notes for the self-guided walks. With the understandable disclaimer that the remoteness of some locations limits the choices for accommodation and meals, they clearly make an effort to pamper walkers at the start and end of each day.

    Our recent Great SW Walk was the shorter version – about half of the 250 km total. We began and ended in Portland, with much of the initial forest section omitted, but most of the beautiful river sections and spectacular coastal sections included. Auswalk were happy to accommodate our request for 7 rather than 6 days’ walking, which allowed us to spread out the unusually long first two days (~27 km each) to three days of ~20, 14 and 20 km – a much more pleasant way to begin, allowing us to enjoy each day without pressure.

    As for accommodation on the GSWW – the beautifully renovated Lorelei B&B in Portland (built in 1915 as a doctor’s home / office), was a particular favourite. Roger was an excellent and generous host offering an amazing breakfast and complimentary wine, beer and nibbles each evening. We loved sitting in the bay window looking out at the rose garden, sipping a glass of sparkling wine before dinner. We also had a memorable stay at the Nelson Cottage B&B, where our room used to be a police station (built in 1885 and comfortably updated), and where we greatly enjoyed John & Trish’s warm hospitality. John’s extensive knowledge of the area was a bonus.

    We frequently come to Australia from Canada to visit family. Each time we look forward to including another Auswalk in our plans. Based on our experience, we recommend Auswalk without reservation.
