OVERVIEW

Swaying palm trees, breathtaking coastal scenery, a crystal-clear lagoon and the southern-most coral reef in the world all feature on this World Heritage Site. The island’s isolation in the Pacific Ocean makes it home to 64 species of unique rainforest plants and teeming seabird colonies. However it’s very accessible, being only a couple of hours flight from either Sydney or Brisbane.

Travel on this island is done primarily by foot on an excellent network of walking trails that criss-cross the island’s volcanic landscape. To maintain such an unspoilt paradise, the number of tourists to the island is restricted. Care and consideration from all visitors is vital to the preservation of this unique environment. We stay and dine at the luxurious 5-star Arajilla Retreat ensuring that you’ll be wowed on and off the track.  This is a very special trip!

DAY 3
MOUNT LIDGEBIRD AND GOATHOUSE CAVE

Exploring the Lord Howe Island walks at the southern end of the island we will tackle a full day circuit walk. Among the many superb bird watching vantage points, Mutton Bird Point is most impressive. This seabird haven is home to a large colony of masked boobies which can be seen plunging into the ocean to feed on fish and squid. Onwards, through stands of unusual prop-rooted Pandanus trees, Boat Harbour’s secluded coral beach makes for a delightful spot for lunch.

The first major climb of the trip ascends 400 metres up the flanks of Mt Lidgbird to Goat House Cave (an easier alternative is available). The last section requires some careful footwork, but fortunately, there are fixed ropes to hold on to. Goat House Cave offers remarkable views, a close up look at the aerial acrobatics of the nesting red-tailed tropic birds, and is an excellent test-run for Mt Gower.

Walking: Moderate / 12 km / 6 hrs / easier option available

DAY 4
MNT ELIZA, NORTH BEACH AND CORAL REEF BOAT TRIP (AND OPTIONAL SNORKLING ON THE REEF)

Another full day on the Lord Howe Island walks, this time in the northern hills of the island – a favourite route among visitors and residents alike. Mt Eliza provides expansive views overlooking the Admiralty Island group, while Malabar Ridge’s vantage points make it easy to linger a while longer. North Beach is the quintessential tropical paradise with palm trees, pristine sandy beach and excellent snorkelling just metres from shore. The delightfully secluded Herring Pools are a microcosm of life, where the relentless ocean has scoured out circular ponds into the rock platforms. Taking a coral viewing boat back, there will be an opportunity to snorkel en route.

Walking: Easy to Moderate / 6-9 km / 4-5 hrs

MALABAR HILL

Today, we walk Malabar Hill across the ridge to take in various lookouts. This is a spectacular walk with incredible views back across the island and out to sea as you walk. In the afternoon it’s free time. Various activities are available including snorkelling, deep-sea fishing, golfing, biking, tennis, swimming and relaxing on the beach. A visit to the local museum provides a treasure chest of natural history and is a great place to learn more about this unique place.

DAY 6
MOUNT GOWER OR AN EASIER ALTERNATIVE WALK

For those up for the challenge, join a local guide to scale Mt Gower – the highest mountain on Lord Howe Island at 875 metres above sea level. Much of the terrain is rugged and the climb is demanding, but for many, this is the highlight of their visit. A trip to Little Island offers a less-strenuous alternative and is home to one of the rarest birds in the world – the wood hen.

Walking: Challenging / 9 km / 9 hrs / easier option available

FITNESS GUIDE

It’s well worth investing some time and effort preparing for your walking holiday. The graph shows the average daily distance, elevation and terrain difficulty for your hike. The dotted line indicates the average across all our walks, which will give you a feel for how challenging your walk is compared to all – and the recommended type, and amount, of preparation needed.  Of course, you can adapt this according to your existing fitness levels and lifestyle.

The graph and the information below can be used in conjunction with the fitness guide to help you prepare for your walking adventure. Across all walks, average daily distance is 16.8km, average daily elevation is 448m, average terrain difficulty is 5/10.

ngraph

DISTANCE - BELOW AVERAGE

Distance is not a major consideration in your training program. However, you should still incorporate some long walks as it will increase your cardiovascular fitness.

ELEVATION - ABOVE AVERAGE

Elevation training is a major consideration in your overall training program. You must include walks with serious hill climbs.

If you do not have access to hills, it is essential to replicate the elevation level you will be undertaking in any way possible such as on a treadmill or stair climber. Walking up and down stairs at work, at a local oval with a grandstand, or up and down small hills is incredibly useful. Also, prioritising resistance weight training will help you develop overall muscle strength.  Elevation is often where walkers encounter problems, opposed to distance, as it uses an entirely different set of muscles to everyday flat walking.

If high altitude is a factor, incorporate sessions at a higher altitude to acclimatise your body to reduced oxygen levels if you are able to. Ensure you can comfortably walk the average elevation per day displayed in the graph, at least one month before you undertake your hike.

TERRAIN

MOUNTAINOUS / UNDULATING TERRAIN

As terrain associated with mountain climbs is often somewhat uneven and rocky, balancing and core exercises are vital.

Try to also include some form of elevation in more than 50% of your walking and prioritise resistance training, whilst incorporating stairs anytime you can. Walking up mountains or hills, up and down stairs at work, or up and down at a local oval with a grandstand is incredibly useful. Elevation is often where walkers encounter problems not distance, as it uses an entirely different set of muscles to everyday flat walking. Concentrate on doing lots of squats and lunges to build your glute muscles.

ROCKY TERRAIN

Whilst preparing for walking on rocky terrain, you must focus on the development of balance, strength, and agility.

Integrate targeted strength exercises, such as lunges, squats, and step-ups, to strengthen your leg muscles, with a particular emphasis on improving stability on uneven surfaces. Balancing exercises are essential. Undertake core strength activity, coupled with exercises such as planks and Russian twists to enhance balance. As you progress, include hikes on progressively rougher terrain if you can. Additionally, the appropriate footwear with good ankle support and tread for grip are essential. Stay mindful, watch your step, and use trekking poles for added stability.

GENERAL INFO

Flights to the island are provided by Qantas Link. The earlier you book the better. Most walks are easy to moderate, although track surfaces can be rough and uneven. The two most challenging walks are Goat House Cave and Mount Gower which will suit those who like to challenge themselves. Mount Gower is is a challenging eight hour return trek, complete with rope-assisted climbs and dizzying drops. Although almost everyone always gets up Mt Lidgbird to Goats.  An alternative walk is offered on both days. As well as hiking we spend time on a boat trip snorkelling on reefs, lazing and BBQ-ing on the beach and sipping champagne at sunset.

See the Bureau of Meteorology for information about temperatures and rainfall ahead of time to ensure proper clothing – the weather on Lord Howe is mild year round.

The walk starts at the Lord Howe airport where you will picked up and driven to your accommodation.

For what to bring please refer to Gear Advice on our FAQ section.

INSURANCE

We require that you have adequate travel insurance against potential losses, damage or injury, including cancellation costs and loss of luggage.

For all trips that require international travel, you must have purchased travel insurance that also includes medical evacuation coverage.

We also charge a cancellation fee if you cancel your walking holiday after we have confirmed it to cover costs incurred from our suppliers and in the office.  See our Terms and Conditions for more information.

INFORMATION PACK

For nearly 30 years we have taken pride in providing seamlessly organised walking holidays, but we know, even with that in mind, that you’ll have many more questions. You will receive a very detailed information pack and itinerary approximately 6 weeks out from departure outlining all the fine detail and much more.

We already knew that Lord Howe Island was a wonderful place, and we had been on 9 previous Auswalk holiday, but it was really great to have guided walks and activities. Our guides Katie and Marie imparted lots of knowledge, and planned and executed our walks extremely well. They really care that you enjoy your walking holiday and do their best to allow for different levels of walkers.

The LHI walks are a little challenging but it is a beautiful spot that everyone should visit at least once. On top of the walking there was snorkeling on the reef, golf and fishing.

We stayed at Arajilla Retreat and it provided a world class hospitality experience.

Experiencing Lord Howe AusWalk was amazing. Paul and Marie our tour guides were engaging, organised and good communicators. We learnt so much about the island in 7 days. Paul threw in a bonus, by patiently providing lots of tips on photography using our iphones. In additon to our tour guide, we were fortunate to have a wonderful group of fellow walkers. The experience of exercise, great company, stunning views, and good food makes for an unforgettable travel experience. May thanks to our group and Marie and Paul for such a happy holiday.

Lord Howe Island is a little blip of land in a big ocean, anchored by two large mountains of volcanic origin at the southern end, a ridge at the other, with a lagoon running along its western side. It is lush, beautiful, peaceful.
To be cossetted in the beautiful surrounds of Arajilla Retreat, fed wonderful food beautifully presented, enjoy the company of a fun, like minded group – what’s not to enjoy?
Then there were our two lovely and superb guides, Marie and Katie. Good fun, helpful, flexible, nothing seemed too much trouble, whether they were out the front leading or ensuring the safe return of some of the slower walkers, like me.
The walking required a lot of concentration and is measured more in ups and downs than kms covered, as there are many steps and paths can be very slippery and uneven with hidden challenges from roots and rocks.
The scenery is superb, with the different light changing the landscape, and the kentia palms, banyans and other vegetation providing intriguing scenes.
An afternoon snorkelling over the brilliant coral on the edge of the lagoon was a wonderful experience, again with great support offered to those who needed it.
A most enjoyable week in a stunning landscape. Thank you Auswalk.

“This was an amazing holiday. A nice balance of active days and luxury at night.
Lord Howe Island is absolutely beautiful. Don’t think of a typical Qld island – it is not full of cafes and restaurants and bars for rowdy drunk tourists. I found it like a friendly country town.
Arajilla is a stunning place to stay. The rooms are spacious and modern. They provide everything you need – backpack, beachbag, beach towel, slippers, robe (this all helps with the luggage limits) and you can borrow snorkelling gear and bikes and more. The staff are friendly and helpful and magically remember all the things you like. They have a great deal with the retreat, which would usually cost significantly more – to stay there as part of the package is such a treat.
The food is crazy good. A menu for breakfast! It’s hard to pick. Gourmet sandwiches for packed lunches. A three course fine dining dinner – the food is amazing and the presentation is exquisite. And happy hour at 5.30 is a real treat after an active day, a good chance to rewind with your group and guides and enjoy great wines.
Marie and Paul are wonderful guides. Patient and considerate of everyone’s experience. Knowledgeable about the Island – flora, fauna and history. They are very warm and funny and great company. I really hope to walk with them again. And little details like bringing varied snacks for trail snacks, and Paul took breathtaking photos the whole trip – he is a great photographer- and spent a lot of time and effort so that we will all have those photos.
The walks are varied but inevitably involve amazing views, close up experiences of the wildlife and a sense of achievement. The Goat House walk is hard but worth it when you stop to have lunch at a cave overlooking most of the island. Doable at your own pace. There are walks to different lookouts and beaches. You can really cover most of the island.
Mt Gower is a hard walk, it is really a climb. You need determination, endurance to walk up increasingly steep sections for hours and upper body strength because a significant part requires using ropes to ascend and descend. Unlike other walks, you can’t just deal with the steep bits at your own pace, the group needs to maintain a certain pace to get up and back in 8 – 9 hours. It is slippery if it gets wet and you are navigating slippery boulders and tree roots. BUT I am not a wiry athlete at all and with a sense of determination to just keep going and focus on each step, I did it. I couldn’t have done it without Paul’s encouragement and support and talking me through my fears when I got scared of heights at the cliff sections. I have no doubt it would have been the same if Marie was the guide for that walk that day. Give it a go, you can stop half way. Dean the approved guide from his environmental tour company was very knowledgeable about the Island and the Information he conveyed along the way was really interesting. The rainforest up the top is magical and you are rewarded with great views of the entire island. The providence petrals up there who clumsily crash through the trees when called by Dean were awesome. YouTube them to see what I mean. I really wanted to experience that and I am glad I did.
The trip includes a snorkelling trip. You must go. I haven’t been snorkelling before and I found it intimidating at first but then amazing to float by the reefs and such beautiful and varied ocean life, including reef sharks and turtles, it’s nice and clear and clean. Others who have done a lot of snorkelling said it rivals the Great Barrier Reef. You don’t have to boat for ages to get there and back, it’s a quick boat ride and plenty of time in the water. We also had a great barbecue by the beach one day and went for a swim and fed the fish.
On free time you can borrow a bike to explore the island, play golf, go to the museum (they show a Frank Hurley video if you time it right) check out various beaches (you may see turtles), feed the fish or borrow a paddle board at Ned’s beach or hire a kayak and kayak around the lagoon – in an hour I managed a paddle around Rabbit Island (the island in the centre of the lagoon) and back, and I have little kayaking experience.
Auswalk are a great company to walk with. They are very professional and organised. The staff are so helpful, if you are thinking about a trip but not sure about something, just call or email and ask. The guides are always fantastic. They must negotiate crazy deals so you stay in luxury accomodation whilst the trip prices still rival those of other walking companies. I hope to walk with them, esp Marie and Paul, again.
Tips – check luggage requirements, your bag really may turn up the next day, so wear your boots and scrunch some shorts and top and underwear in your daypack in case your luggage is delayed. Take washing powder to hand wash your hiking gear so you don’t need 7 lots. Take $1 coins to feed the amazing (big and colourful) fish that will come to you at Ned’s beach, there is a machine that dispenses pellets that takes $1 coins. Take other notes – you can hire boards and paddling gear by honour system at Ned’s beach and the museum is free but takes donations. Look at the time for the evening talks at the museum; for me happy hour ultimately took priority but it’s worth looking at the start of the week (in the info book at Arajilla) because you may prefer to cycle down one evening before dinner.
This is best holiday I have ever had. Well organised, amazing luxury accomodation and food, great walks, fantastic guides, amazing birds and wildlife, beautiful views and flora, great company, trying new activities – a nice mix of luxury and activity. You’ll love it!”

The whole experience was great, very nice accommodation with plenty of food, excellent walks with fantastic views, great guides, and the actually island was lovely and worth while seeing and you get to see the entire island by foot. This is a place I could easily go back to. Overall it was an enjoyable week and I could of stayed longer.

I have just returned from an Auswalk guided walking trip to Lord Howe Island and I couldn’t fault a thing. The accommodation was excellent ( with incredible meals), we walked every day, covering all possible walks on the island, even Mt. Gower for those (that were able !!) ,we had a BBQ and snorkel at Neds Beach one day, and snorkelling in the lagoon on another day.
Last but by no means least, we had great guides Marie and Brett, who had organised every little thing, even down to muesli bars with our packed lunches. They were great fun and we had a lovely group of like minded people which made it even better.
Do yourselves a favour – if you plan a walking trip within Australia – look at Auswalks first. They are a very professional group and think of everything to make your holiday enjoyable.

We have just finished the self guided Blue Mountain Traverse. Loved it …..mostly. The hikes were excellent but we did not realize there would be so many stairs/steps/ladders down into the valley and back up. Although we are in our early 70’s we are avid walkers/hikers and are comfortable in walking in the Appalachians of the USA. But our local Virginia walks traverse the hillsides and switch back up and down hill. The Auswalk trip challenged our knees and leg muscles as we attacked the hundreds of stone steps, steel ladders, and exposed ups and downs. The only fault we lay on Auswalk is that they could have done a better job providing information on how strenuous portions of this walk could be. The scenery is brilliant. The route notes and maps are superb. Organization and arrangements were the best. Accomodations ( and the wonderful inn keepers) were top drawer in historic lodging in scenic locations. If you are in relatively good shape and know what you are getting into this is a wonderful way to get to know some parts of Australia that are unfamiliar to North Americans.

ARAJILLA AND ORIENTATION WALK

Arrive on Lord Howe Island mid-afternoon. After settling in, we set off on our orientation walk.

Please note, the following itinerary is just a rough guide, days may change depending on tides and weather.

Walks: Easy / 4 km / 1.5 hrs

Meals: Dinner will be prepared by the in-house chefs at Arajilla Retreat

Accommodation: Arajilla Retreat in private rooms with ensuites

DAY 2
BLINKY BEACH, NED'S BEACH AND TRANSIT HILL

A morning walk to Transit Hill’s lookout tower provides panoramic views of the lagoon and ocean. At Blinky Beach, learn about the Kentia palm – a distinctive feature of the island, occurring naturally here and nowhere else in the world. In the afternoon, a reef walk at picturesque Ned’s Beach is a showcase of diverse marine life and vibrantly coloured corals.

Walking: Easy / 9 km / 5 hrs

Meals: All meals will be prepared by the in-house chefs at Arajilla Retreat, including a cooked breakfast and an amazing two-course dinner in the retreat restaurant. Lunch is a very substantial walkers lunch.

DAY 3
MOUNT LIDGEBIRD AND GOATHOUSE CAVE

Meals: All meals will be prepared by the in-house chefs at Arajilla Retreat, including a cooked breakfast and an amazing two-course dinner in the retreat restaurant. Lunch is a very substantial walkers lunch.

Accommodation: Arajilla Retreat in private rooms with ensuites

DAY 4
MNT ELIZA, NORTH BEACH AND CORAL REEF BOAT TRIP (AND OPTIONAL SNORKLING ON THE REEF)

Meals: All meals will be prepared by the in-house chefs at Arajilla Retreat, including a cooked breakfast and an amazing two-course dinner in the retreat restaurant. Lunch is a very substantial walkers lunch.

Accommodation: Arajilla Retreat in private rooms with ensuites

DAY 5
MALABAR HILL

Today, we walk Malabar Hill across the ridge to take in various lookouts. This is a spectacular walk with incredible views back across the island and out to sea as you walk. In the afternoon it’s free time. Various activities are available including snorkelling, deep-sea fishing, golfing, biking, tennis, swimming and relaxing on the beach. A visit to the local museum provides a treasure chest of natural history and is a great place to learn more about this unique place.

Walking: Easy to Moderate / 9 km / 4 hrs

Meals: All meals will be prepared by the in-house chefs at Arajilla Retreat, including a cooked breakfast and an amazing two-course dinner in the retreat restaurant. Lunch is a very substantial walkers lunch.

Accommodation: Arajilla Retreat in private rooms with ensuites

DAY 6
MOUNT GOWER OR AN EASIER ALTERNATIVE WALK

For those up for the challenge, join a local guide to scale Mt Gower – the highest mountain on Lord Howe Island at 875 metres above sea level. Much of the terrain is rugged and the climb is demanding, but for many, this is the highlight of their visit. A trip to Little Island offers a less-strenuous alternative and is home to one of the rarest birds in the world – the wood hen.

Walking: Challenging / 9 km / 9 hrs / easier option available

Meals: All meals will be prepared by the in-house chefs at Arajilla Retreat, including a cooked breakfast and an amazing two-course dinner in the retreat restaurant. Lunch is a very substantial walkers lunch.

Before leaving this paradise behind, a final walk takes visitors to the Valley of the Shadows and the Clear Place.

Fitness Guide

INFORMATION PACK
