OVERVIEW

The high peaks of Kosciuszko National Park are a mecca for walkers keen to see rugged scenery, masses of spectacular wildflowers and the summit of Mt Kosciuszko. The walking is exhilarating yet relatively easy for an alpine environment. Be rewarded with spectacular views as you walk each day, mountain fresh air and the sense of completion as you wind your way through the mountains from Wragges Creek to Thredbo.

Follow the Aqueduct Trail, learning about the mighty Snowy Mountains Scheme and cross the Snowy River. On the last day, we take the chairlift ride back to the top of Mt Kosciuszko and walk down from the summit to Thredbo via Dead Horse Gap to cap off what is an amazing linear trek through the alps. With two experienced guides to look after every detail, you'll be in safe hands, and have the option to shorten walks if you prefer.  If you're after a shorter itinerary, then our 4-day Long Weekend trip may suit you better.

DAY 1
CANBERRA TO JINDABYNE TO PERISHER VALLEY

Start at the Vibe Hotel at 8:00 am,  or in Canberra CBD at 8.30 am (on London Circuit out front of the museum). Travel to Jindabyne for lunch. Afternoon walk featuring a beautiful Snowy Mountains river walk and traversing along a creek featuring superb wildflowers.

DAY 2
THE AQUEDUCT TRAIL AND GUTHEGA TO CHARLOTTES PASS

The walk begins with an easy Aqueduct Trail. Marvel at one of the greatest engineering feats in the world – the mighty Snowy Mountains Scheme built in the 1950s and 60s to change the direction of the rivers and provide water for farmers on the dry inland plains. The path meanders beside the scheme’s aqueducts, rivers and dams that opened up this isolated country. The route continues from Guthega Alpine village, set on the banks of the Snowy River to Charlottes Pass via the superb Illawong track.

Walking: Easy to moderate / 17 km / 5-7 hrs / easier 7 -10 km option available

DAY 3
GUTHEGA TO PORCUPINE ROCKS VIA PERISHER

Traverse through Blue Cow alpine ski resort to Perisher Valley. Climb to Porcupine Rocks for spectacular views of Crackenback. The ancient snow gum trees here are twisted and gnarled through centuries of harsh winters. After rain or fog, these tree trunks change colour to brilliant shades of red, orange, yellow and green. In summer when we walk this track, the wildflowers have to be seen to be believed – fields of snow daisies, alpine buttercups, billy buttons, golden everlastings and unique alpine gentians.

Walking: Moderate / 13 km / 4-6 hrs / easier 8km option available

DAY 4
CHARLOTTES PASS TO BLUE LAKE AND CARUTHERS SADDLE

This is Man from Snowy River territory; step back in time and visit a historic cattleman’s hut. High above the tree line, we’ll learn how delicate plants can thrive in such challenging conditions and gain an insight into the geology of this rugged landscape. Today we walk to the lookout for Blue Lake, and walk Headley Tarn and Caruthers Saddle. Cross the famous Snowy River, walk through fields carpeted in wildflowers, stroll along high grassy ridges and chill your drink in an icy lake. Watch out for Sphagnum Bogs – large mossy plants that hold six times their weight in water then slowly release it into the alpine streams. At lunch, we sit alongside the unique Feldmark plants that occur nowhere else on earth.

Walking: Moderate to challenging / 17 km / 5-6.5 hrs / easier 10k m option available

DAY 5
CHARLOTTES PASS TO THREDBO VIA MOUNT KOSCIUSZKO

Walk to the summit of the highest mountain in Australia, Mt Kosciuszko, a highlight not to be missed. This mountain is a mecca for walkers and you’ll share the summit with people from all over the world. Finish the day with an exhilarating ride down the country’s longest chairlift. Hardy walkers can choose to walk Merritt’s Track steeply down through unique Mountain Ash forests and waterfall valleys.

Walking: Moderate / 17 km / 5-6.5 hrs / easier 10 km option available

DAY 6
CHAIRLIFT TO KOSCIUSZKO TRAILHEAD VIA DEAD HORSE GAP TO THREDBO

Today’s your chance to take the easy way and ride the chairlift up. Our walk descends through fields of alpine wildflowers and snow gum forests to the Thredbo Valley. Will you be one of the lucky ones to see wild brumbies roaming the plains? Walk quietly in this special, pristine place. Finish the day with an easy stroll along the banks of the swift Thredbo River as it meanders down to the village.

Walking: Easy to moderate / 14 km / 5-6.5 hrs / easy 10 km option available

DAY 7
THREDBO TO JINDABYNE (ONWARD TRAVEL)

After breakfast, we’ll tour back to Canberra airport via Cooma and an excellent Art gallery. The trip finishes at around 1.30 pm in Canberra.

ACCOMMODATION & DINING

OVERVIEW

We stay in high-quality ski lodges right in the middle of the park, thus the accommodations are all in memorable locations. More importantly, they are very comfortable and provide a great place to relax after a day on the track. All the rooms have ensuites and reflect the alpine regions’ character.

The two-course dinners are prepared by professional chefs at both Valhalla Lodge and Boali Lodge. The area is noted for fresh Snowy Mountains trout and tender high-country beef, and also boasts the highest winery in the country.

Packed walkers lunches and picnics complete the circle ensuring that your appetite is always satisfied. In fact, you can look forward to having lunch on a daily basis at some of the most beautiful alpine locations in Australia. A walkers lunch may include a high protein type salad, a roll or a wrap, a muesli bar, cake or muffin and a piece of fruit. Each day is slightly different. Lunch is always augmented by Auswalk’s trail mix.

Importantly, you start each day with a cooked breakfast – a great way to ready yourself for the upcoming walk.

Alcohol or drinks with meals are not included (except tea/coffee and juice with breakfast).

FITNESS GUIDE

It’s well worth investing some time and effort preparing for your walking holiday. The graph shows the average daily distance, elevation and terrain difficulty for your hike. The dotted line indicates the average across all our walks, which will give you a feel for how challenging your walk is compared to all – and the recommended type, and amount, of preparation needed.  Of course, you can adapt this according to your existing fitness levels and lifestyle.

The graph and the information below can be used in conjunction with the fitness guide to help you prepare for your walking adventure. Across all walks, average daily distance is 16.8km, average daily elevation is 448m, average terrain difficulty is 5/10.

DISTANCE - ~AVERAGE

Distance training should be a consideration in your overall training program, so take every opportunity you can to walk. As you progress, incorporate longer walks into your training plan.

Schedule one or two long walks each week, gradually increasing the distance until you can comfortably cover 16km in a single day. Also include walks on consecutive days to help your body adapt to the demands of walking for multiple days in a row.

Ensure you can comfortably walk the average distance per day displayed in the graph, at least one month before you undertake your hike.

ELEVATION - ~AVERAGE

Elevation training should be a consideration in your overall training program.

Try to include some form of elevation in more than 40% of your walking and prioritise resistance training, whilst incorporating stairs anytime you can. Walking up and down stairs at work, at a local oval with a grandstand or up and down small hills is incredibly useful. Elevation is often where walkers encounter problems, opposed to distance, as it uses an entirely different set of muscles to everyday flat walking.

Ensure you can comfortably walk the average elevation per day displayed in the graph, at least one month before you undertake your hike.

TERRAIN

MOUNTAINOUS / UNDULATING TERRAIN

As terrain associated with mountain climbs is often somewhat uneven and rocky, balancing and core exercises are vital.

Try to also include some form of elevation in more than 50% of your walking and prioritise resistance training, whilst incorporating stairs anytime you can. Walking up mountains or hills, up and down stairs at work, or up and down at a local oval with a grandstand is incredibly useful. Elevation is often where walkers encounter problems not distance, as it uses an entirely different set of muscles to everyday flat walking. Concentrate on doing lots of squats and lunges to build your glute muscles.

UNEVEN TERRAIN

Preparation for hiking on uneven terrain demands a blend of physical and mental readiness.

Begin with balance-enhancing exercises, such as one-legged stands and stability ball workouts, laying a groundwork for stability and coordination. Strengthening the lower body is especially important, achieved through the incorporation of squats, lunges, and step-ups. Gradually increase the complexity of the terrain on which you walk, moving from gravel paths to rocky trails. Cultivate mindfulness during your practice, directing focused attention to both your immediate surroundings and precise foot placement.

The importance of suitable footwear cannot be overstated; prioritise options that offer robust support and reliable grip to navigate varying terrains with confidence. Build endurance through consistent hikes, progressively increasing distance and difficulty.

GENERAL INFO

The tracks are mostly well cared for, dry and firm this time of year. However, on the odd occasion, we have encountered wet portions of the track. Most of the walks are moderate. The easier alternative walks are great for first-timers. However, the walks often involve challenging walking between 5 to 7 hours each day, across amazing ridgelines, with some steep ascents and descents so the experienced hikers won’t be disappointed. The altitude on this walk is between 1400 to 2228 metres so slopes that you would find easy at home will require a little more effort, This trip operates with two experienced and knowledgeable guides, so we can offer easier and harder walk options along the way.

Pre and post-tour accommodation: There are many good hotels in Canberra, however, we pick up and drop off at the Vibe Hotel at Canberra Airport. The tour starts at the Vibe Hotel at 8.00 am, or in Canberra CBD at 8.30 am (on London Circuit out front of the museum). The tour finishes in Canberra on the last day at approximately 1 pm.

WEATHER

This mountain environment is about 10 degrees cooler than Sydney. January-February is usually warm and the alpine wildflowers are at their best. December & March are usually cool to mild. By April, the conditions usually start to deteriorate. This holiday is not available for the rest of the year due to the likelihood of snow covering the walking tracks.

See the Bureau of Meteorology for information about temperatures and rainfall ahead of time to ensure proper clothing.

We require that you have adequate travel insurance against potential losses, damage or injury, including cancellation costs and loss of luggage.

For all trips that require international travel, you must have purchased travel insurance that also includes medical evacuation coverage.

    This was my second Auswalk trip. As it was so good that I booked my third Auswalk experience, for later in the year, within a few days of arriving home.
    The foundations of the great week were: my seven wonderful walking colleagues, our two terrific guides Katie and Dan – there were such great vibes between them, the delicious meals, and the interesting and wonderful accommodation. The evenings were a bonus for me – sitting on the big comfortable ski lodge lounge suites, reading a book or sleeping, and sipping Bundy Rum and cokes.
    Oh, and the walking was so varied and interesting. This was my first visit to the Mt Kosciuszko National Park and I was so impressed with the hydro scheme, the ski infrastructure, Thredbo, the terrain, the mountains, the views, the snow gums, and the wildflowers

    A thoroughly enjoyable week of walking with friends in the Snowy Mountains. As it was a self guided walk we appreciated the detailed walking notes and the organisation provided by Auswalk.The accommodation and food were excellent and our hosts were so friendly and helpful.     My husband and I have just completed our first self-guided walk with Auswalk from 1-7 January 2016. The organisation, accommodation and food were all excellent, and the week would have been perfect if Auswalk had also been able to control the weather! Unfortunately, it was rainy and cold for most of the week and we didn’t see a single view. We’re still not quite convinced that Mt Kosciuszko actually exists! We hope to do more walks with Auswalk in the future, but firstly, we’re going out to buy a few items of waterproof clothing …

    I took part in the Roof of Australia walk earlier this year. I loved it. The weather was totally unpredictable and one day we experienced the coldest, windiest walk of my life. Thanks to Marie’s down coat and some morning tea sugar snakes I survived to tell the tale. I don’t think I’ve ever been so relieved to see a dwelling as I was to see that little Seaman’s Hut where we sheltered for morning tea. Marie and Lisa were great. Very welcoming, helpful and innovative in their approach and with our safety and enjoyment paramount in their thinking, and great fun as well. Last year I did the Top End trip with Auswalk and enjoyed that equally. I’ll definitely be doing more walks with them.

    I have just returned from a group guided holiday in the Snowy Mountains with Auswalk. Despite some unfavorable weather, some days walking in mist, rain and wind, I thoroughly enjoyed the mountain experience. The views appeared and disappeared and gave the holiday an element of surprise. Having completed several self guided walks with Auswalk, it was great to walk with a great group of people who love walking and we all looked out for each other. Our guides, Lisa and Marie, were friendly and knowledgeable and our safety was always their priority. The standard of accommodation and food was very good. As conditions in the mountains can change quickly it is essential to be fully prepared with several layers of warm clothing including gloves and beanie and a good quality water proof jacket and over-trousers. I would definitely recommend Auswalk to anyone interested in a hiking holiday.

    “I recently joined a group of 15 like minded people for a 6 day snow shoe walk in the Snowy Mountains. It was a first time for me, never having been in the snow, let alone walking with snow shoes! We travelled to different snow slopes each day, so experienced different types of conditions. Our guides Denise and Gavin were wonderful, very patient with the newbies and helpful at all times.
    Would recommend this walk for pretty fit walkers, as it requires strength and concentration at all times.
    Australia is very lucky to have a company such as Auswalk- they are well organised and knowledgeable.”

OVERVIEW

The high peaks of Kosciuszko National Park are a mecca for walkers keen to see rugged scenery, masses of spectacular wildflowers and the summit of Mt Kosciuszko. The walking is exhilarating yet relatively easy for an alpine environment. Be rewarded with spectacular views as you walk each day, mountain fresh air and the sense of completion as you wind your way through the mountains from Wragges Creek to Thredbo.

Follow the Aqueduct Trail, learning about the mighty Snowy Mountains Scheme and cross the Snowy River. On the last day, we take the chairlift ride back to the top of Mt Kosciuszko and walk down from the summit to Thredbo via Dead Horse Gap to cap off what is an amazing linear trek through the alps. With two experienced guides to look after every detail, you'll be in safe hands, and have the option to shorten walks if you prefer.  If you're after a shorter itinerary, then our 4-day Long Weekend trip may suit you better.

DAY 1
CANBERRA TO JINDABYNE TO PERISHER VALLEY

Start at the Vibe Hotel at 8:00 am,  or in Canberra CBD at 8.30 am (on London Circuit out front of the museum). Travel to Jindabyne for lunch. Afternoon walk featuring a beautiful Snowy Mountains river walk and traversing along a creek featuring superb wildflowers.

DAY 2
THE AQUEDUCT TRAIL AND GUTHEGA TO CHARLOTTES PASS

The walk begins with an easy Aqueduct Trail. Marvel at one of the greatest engineering feats in the world – the mighty Snowy Mountains Scheme built in the 1950s and 60s to change the direction of the rivers and provide water for farmers on the dry inland plains. The path meanders beside the scheme’s aqueducts, rivers and dams that opened up this isolated country. The route continues from Guthega Alpine village, set on the banks of the Snowy River to Charlottes Pass via the superb Illawong track.

Walking: Easy to moderate / 17 km / 5-7 hrs / easier 7 -10 km option available

DAY 3
GUTHEGA TO PORCUPINE ROCKS VIA PERISHER

Traverse through Blue Cow alpine ski resort to Perisher Valley. Climb to Porcupine Rocks for spectacular views of Crackenback. The ancient snow gum trees here are twisted and gnarled through centuries of harsh winters. After rain or fog, these tree trunks change colour to brilliant shades of red, orange, yellow and green. In summer when we walk this track, the wildflowers have to be seen to be believed – fields of snow daisies, alpine buttercups, billy buttons, golden everlastings and unique alpine gentians.

Walking: Moderate / 13 km / 4-6 hrs / easier 8km option available

DAY 4
CHARLOTTES PASS TO BLUE LAKE AND CARUTHERS SADDLE

This is Man from Snowy River territory; step back in time and visit a historic cattleman’s hut. High above the tree line, we’ll learn how delicate plants can thrive in such challenging conditions and gain an insight into the geology of this rugged landscape. Today we walk to the lookout for Blue Lake, and walk Headley Tarn and Caruthers Saddle. Cross the famous Snowy River, walk through fields carpeted in wildflowers, stroll along high grassy ridges and chill your drink in an icy lake. Watch out for Sphagnum Bogs – large mossy plants that hold six times their weight in water then slowly release it into the alpine streams. At lunch, we sit alongside the unique Feldmark plants that occur nowhere else on earth.

Walking: Moderate to challenging / 17 km / 5-6.5 hrs / easier 10k m option available

DAY 5
CHARLOTTES PASS TO THREDBO VIA MOUNT KOSCIUSZKO

Walk to the summit of the highest mountain in Australia, Mt Kosciuszko, a highlight not to be missed. This mountain is a mecca for walkers and you’ll share the summit with people from all over the world. Finish the day with an exhilarating ride down the country’s longest chairlift. Hardy walkers can choose to walk Merritt’s Track steeply down through unique Mountain Ash forests and waterfall valleys.

Today’s your chance to take the easy way and ride the chairlift up. Our walk descends through fields of alpine wildflowers and snow gum forests to the Thredbo Valley. Will you be one of the lucky ones to see wild brumbies roaming the plains? Walk quietly in this special, pristine place. Finish the day with an easy stroll along the banks of the swift Thredbo River as it meanders down to the village.

ACCOMMODATION & DINING

OVERVIEW

We stay in high-quality ski lodges right in the middle of the park, thus the accommodations are all in memorable locations. More importantly, they are very comfortable and provide a great place to relax after a day on the track. All the rooms have ensuites and reflect the alpine regions’ character.

The two-course dinners are prepared by professional chefs at both Valhalla Lodge and Boali Lodge. The area is noted for fresh Snowy Mountains trout and tender high-country beef, and also boasts the highest winery in the country.

Packed walkers lunches and picnics complete the circle ensuring that your appetite is always satisfied. In fact, you can look forward to having lunch on a daily basis at some of the most beautiful alpine locations in Australia. A walkers lunch may include a high protein type salad, a roll or a wrap, a muesli bar, cake or muffin and a piece of fruit. Each day is slightly different. Lunch is always augmented by Auswalk’s trail mix.

Importantly, you start each day with a cooked breakfast – a great way to ready yourself for the upcoming walk.

FITNESS GUIDE

It’s well worth investing some time and effort preparing for your walking holiday. The graph shows the average daily distance, elevation and terrain difficulty for your hike. The dotted line indicates the average across all our walks, which will give you a feel for how challenging your walk is compared to all – and the recommended type, and amount, of preparation needed.  Of course, you can adapt this according to your existing fitness levels and lifestyle.

The graph and the information below can be used in conjunction with the fitness guide to help you prepare for your walking adventure. Across all walks, average daily distance is 16.8km, average daily elevation is 448m, average terrain difficulty is 5/10.

DISTANCE - ~AVERAGE

Distance training should be a consideration in your overall training program, so take every opportunity you can to walk. As you progress, incorporate longer walks into your training plan.

Schedule one or two long walks each week, gradually increasing the distance until you can comfortably cover 16km in a single day. Also include walks on consecutive days to help your body adapt to the demands of walking for multiple days in a row.

Ensure you can comfortably walk the average distance per day displayed in the graph, at least one month before you undertake your hike.

ELEVATION - ~AVERAGE

Elevation training should be a consideration in your overall training program.

Try to include some form of elevation in more than 40% of your walking and prioritise resistance training, whilst incorporating stairs anytime you can. Walking up and down stairs at work, at a local oval with a grandstand or up and down small hills is incredibly useful. Elevation is often where walkers encounter problems, opposed to distance, as it uses an entirely different set of muscles to everyday flat walking.

Ensure you can comfortably walk the average elevation per day displayed in the graph, at least one month before you undertake your hike.

TERRAIN

MOUNTAINOUS / UNDULATING TERRAIN

As terrain associated with mountain climbs is often somewhat uneven and rocky, balancing and core exercises are vital.

Try to also include some form of elevation in more than 50% of your walking and prioritise resistance training, whilst incorporating stairs anytime you can. Walking up mountains or hills, up and down stairs at work, or up and down at a local oval with a grandstand is incredibly useful. Elevation is often where walkers encounter problems not distance, as it uses an entirely different set of muscles to everyday flat walking. Concentrate on doing lots of squats and lunges to build your glute muscles.

UNEVEN TERRAIN

Preparation for hiking on uneven terrain demands a blend of physical and mental readiness.

Begin with balance-enhancing exercises, such as one-legged stands and stability ball workouts, laying a groundwork for stability and coordination. Strengthening the lower body is especially important, achieved through the incorporation of squats, lunges, and step-ups. Gradually increase the complexity of the terrain on which you walk, moving from gravel paths to rocky trails. Cultivate mindfulness during your practice, directing focused attention to both your immediate surroundings and precise foot placement.

The importance of suitable footwear cannot be overstated; prioritise options that offer robust support and reliable grip to navigate varying terrains with confidence. Build endurance through consistent hikes, progressively increasing distance and difficulty.

General Info

GENERAL INFO

The tracks are mostly well cared for, dry and firm this time of year. However, on the odd occasion, we have encountered wet portions of the track. Most of the walks are moderate. The easier alternative walks are great for first-timers. However, the walks often involve challenging walking between 5 to 7 hours each day, across amazing ridgelines, with some steep ascents and descents so the experienced hikers won’t be disappointed. The altitude on this walk is between 1400 to 2228 metres so slopes that you would find easy at home will require a little more effort, This trip operates with two experienced and knowledgeable guides, so we can offer easier and harder walk options along the way.

Pre and post-tour accommodation: There are many good hotels in Canberra, however, we pick up and drop off at the Vibe Hotel at Canberra Airport. The tour starts at the Vibe Hotel at 8.00 am, or in Canberra CBD at 8.30 am (on London Circuit out front of the museum). The tour finishes in Canberra on the last day at approximately 1 pm.

WEATHER

This mountain environment is about 10 degrees cooler than Sydney. January-February is usually warm and the alpine wildflowers are at their best. December & March are usually cool to mild. By April, the conditions usually start to deteriorate. This holiday is not available for the rest of the year due to the likelihood of snow covering the walking tracks.

See the Bureau of Meteorology for information about temperatures and rainfall ahead of time to ensure proper clothing.

    This was my second Auswalk trip. As it was so good that I booked my third Auswalk experience, for later in the year, within a few days of arriving home.
    The foundations of the great week were: my seven wonderful walking colleagues, our two terrific guides Katie and Dan – there were such great vibes between them, the delicious meals, and the interesting and wonderful accommodation. The evenings were a bonus for me – sitting on the big comfortable ski lodge lounge suites, reading a book or sleeping, and sipping Bundy Rum and cokes.
    Oh, and the walking was so varied and interesting. This was my first visit to the Mt Kosciuszko National Park and I was so impressed with the hydro scheme, the ski infrastructure, Thredbo, the terrain, the mountains, the views, the snow gums, and the wildflowers

    My husband and I have just completed our first self-guided walk with Auswalk from 1-7 January 2016. The organisation, accommodation and food were all excellent, and the week would have been perfect if Auswalk had also been able to control the weather! Unfortunately, it was rainy and cold for most of the week and we didn’t see a single view. We’re still not quite convinced that Mt Kosciuszko actually exists! We hope to do more walks with Auswalk in the future, but firstly, we’re going out to buy a few items of waterproof clothing …

    I took part in the Roof of Australia walk earlier this year. I loved it. The weather was totally unpredictable and one day we experienced the coldest, windiest walk of my life. Thanks to Marie’s down coat and some morning tea sugar snakes I survived to tell the tale. I don’t think I’ve ever been so relieved to see a dwelling as I was to see that little Seaman’s Hut where we sheltered for morning tea. Marie and Lisa were great. Very welcoming, helpful and innovative in their approach and with our safety and enjoyment paramount in their thinking, and great fun as well. Last year I did the Top End trip with Auswalk and enjoyed that equally. I’ll definitely be doing more walks with them.

    I have just returned from a group guided holiday in the Snowy Mountains with Auswalk. Despite some unfavorable weather, some days walking in mist, rain and wind, I thoroughly enjoyed the mountain experience. The views appeared and disappeared and gave the holiday an element of surprise. Having completed several self guided walks with Auswalk, it was great to walk with a great group of people who love walking and we all looked out for each other. Our guides, Lisa and Marie, were friendly and knowledgeable and our safety was always their priority. The standard of accommodation and food was very good. As conditions in the mountains can change quickly it is essential to be fully prepared with several layers of warm clothing including gloves and beanie and a good quality water proof jacket and over-trousers. I would definitely recommend Auswalk to anyone interested in a hiking holiday.

    “I recently joined a group of 15 like minded people for a 6 day snow shoe walk in the Snowy Mountains. It was a first time for me, never having been in the snow, let alone walking with snow shoes! We travelled to different snow slopes each day, so experienced different types of conditions. Our guides Denise and Gavin were wonderful, very patient with the newbies and helpful at all times.
    Would recommend this walk for pretty fit walkers, as it requires strength and concentration at all times.
    Australia is very lucky to have a company such as Auswalk- they are well organised and knowledgeable.”
