OVERVIEW

TRACK CLOSED DUE TO FURTHER FLOODING AND LANDSLIDES UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE

Locals like to keep the Yuraygir Coastal Walk a closely guarded secret, and it’s no wonder once you discover its spectacular beaches, picturesque lagoons and the relaxed charm and character of its coastal villages.

The Yuraygir Coastal Walk begins at Iluka and Yamba, two settlements that hug either side of the majestic Clarence River. The walk throws a variety of experiences at you including coastal hiking, littoral rainforests, paperbark swamps, colourful heathlands, crystal clear creeks and lagoons and spectacular rock platforms. Graceful pandanus trees line the picture-perfect beaches on the longest stretch of protected coastline in New South Wales.

We have also allowed time each day to take a swim or just hang out on your own private stretch of untouched beach. As an added bonus, the walk links the picturesque villages of Yamba, Angourie, Brooms Head, Sandon River, Minnie Water, Wooli and Red Rock (or Station Creek) giving it a real inn-to-inn feel. This is a track less-walked, and it’s likely that you will have the added bonus of having the splendour of pristine beaches and much more all to yourself.

The transfers are more cost-effective for larger groups on this trip so for 4 or more there is a $250 discount per pax (not in conjunction with any other offer).

FITNESS GUIDE

It’s well worth investing some time and effort preparing for your walking holiday. The graph shows the average daily distance, elevation and terrain difficulty for your hike. The dotted line indicates the average across all our walks, which will give you a feel for how challenging your walk is compared to all – and the recommended type, and amount, of preparation needed.  Of course, you can adapt this according to your existing fitness levels and lifestyle.

The graph and the information below can be used in conjunction with the fitness guide to help you prepare for your walking adventure. Across all walks, average daily distance is 16.8km, average daily elevation is 448m, average terrain difficulty is 5/10.

ngraph

DISTANCE - ~AVERAGE

Distance training should be a consideration in your overall training program, so take every opportunity you can to walk. As you progress, incorporate longer walks into your training plan.

Schedule one or two long walks each week, gradually increasing the distance until you can comfortably cover 16km in a single day. Also include walks on consecutive days to help your body adapt to the demands of walking for multiple days in a row.

Ensure you can comfortably walk the average distance per day displayed in the graph, at least one month before you undertake your hike.

ELEVATION - BELOW AVERAGE

Elevation is not a major consideration in your overall training program. However, you should still incorporate some form of resistance training to increase your endurance.

TERRAIN

SAND TERRAIN

To prepare for walking on sand you will need specialised training owing to the soft and yielding nature of this type of terrain. It has a distinct impact on the body, especially the calf muscles as you get older. Sand moves when we walk and can lead to the overextension of the calf muscles resulting in discomfort and aches over prolonged periods.

To avoid this you should target exercises for lower body strength such as lunges, squats, and calf raises. Incorporate barefoot walks on soft surfaces such as grass to improve balance and foot muscle strength. Practice walking on the beach or sand dunes if you can to acclimatise to the unique demands of a sandy terrain.

FLAT TERRAIN

Whilst training for walking on flat and hard terrain, you should focus on building endurance and ensuring you can maintain a comfortable pace.

Start with regular walks on sidewalks, roads, or paved paths to get used to the surface. Maintain a proper posture and engage your core muscles to support your back, keeping a steady gait. Ensure that you have comfortable, supportive footwear with adequate cushioning. If endurance is important, consider incorporating low-impact cross-training activities like swimming or cycling into your routine.

GENERAL INFO

As always, Auswalk supports the local economy and are fully supported by Parks NSW.

This walk covers more than 60km distance averaging just over 15km per day. The walking is mostly easy to moderate. There is some extended beach walking on sand and undulating tracks. The walk is relatively easy and allows for plenty of time to explore the region or simply stay and explore the coast yourself. You will also need to wade across a creek or two. This will usually be ankle to knee-deep but it can be a little deeper from time to time. If you have flexibility with regard to your departure date then we can line up the tide to have you walk across Coorindi River (more of an estuary), the water can be up to your hips. If the tide is unfavourable we can have you walk back from Station Creek, miss the last 3 km on a beach, and have you cross the Wooli River once again.

There are lots of transfers on this walk so if we can share them amongst more people we can offer a $200 discount per pax for groups of 4 or more.

For what to bring please refer to Gear Advice on our FAQ section.
