Overview

The Coast to Coast is one of Britain's most iconic long-distance walking routes, devised by legendary fell-walker and guidebook writer Alfred Wainwright in 1973. This 17-day, 309-kilometre walk traverses some of the finest ground in England, crossing from the Irish Sea at St Bees to the North Sea at Robin Hood's Bay through three major national parks: the Lake District, the Yorkshire Dales, and the North York Moors.

The route favours higher ground and steers clear of urban areas wherever possible, delivering a genuine sense of wildness throughout. This is not an easy pub-to-pub walk, and the opening days through the Lake District are more demanding than many expect. With a little preparation, however, the Coast to Coast is very achievable and enormously rewarding.

Highlights

  • Picturesque country villages, farms and old churches with stunning stained-glass windows
  • Stay in charming B&Bs or iconic country pubs, enjoy real local ales and real country hospitality
  • Walk through the Grasmere Valley which the poet Wordsworth famously called, ‘the loveliest spot that man hath found’
  • Rolling green hills, drystone walls, and fluffy sheep in the Yorkshire Dales
  • Walk to the summit of the Nine Standards Rigg with its enigmatic, drystone cairns
  • Neolithic standing stones, medieval stone crosses & old estate boundary markers on the North York Moors
  • Option to ride with your luggage rather than walk if the weather is not cooperating

Where You'll Stay

Staying in traditional English B&Bs and country pubs is one of the defining pleasures of the Coast to Coast, and sixteen nights across this walk give you the full measure of it. Most properties sit at three or four stars, and the hosts bring a warmth and personal knowledge of the route that sets these stays apart. Many own their properties and have walked the Coast to Coast themselves, in some cases more than once. All are clean, comfortable and stocked with the kind of genuine local hospitality, including crisp local ale, that this part of England does well. On occasion, an alternative property of equal quality may be used in place of those listed due to availability.

What You'll Eat

Proper English hospitality starts at the breakfast table on this walk, with sixteen home-cooked breakfasts included throughout. Fifteen walker's lunches keep you well fuelled across the miles each day. Dinner is yours to discover each evening, and with country pubs and local restaurants lining the Coast to Coast route, that is one of the better parts of the day. Crisp local ales and honest, hearty cooking are never far away, and the hosts at your accommodation are always happy to point you in the right direction.

Note: Please advise us of any food allergies or intolerances at the time of booking. If you have severe allergies, bringing some of your own snacks is recommended, as specialist ingredients can be harder to source along the way.

More About This Trip

The walk starts in St Bees and finishes in Robin Hood's Bay, crossing the north of England from west to east. The closest airports are Manchester (MAN) and Newcastle (NCL). From London, trains from Euston reach St Bees via Carlisle in around 5 hours, with one or two changes required. Those preferring a direct service can travel to Penrith and arrange a private transfer to St Bees. Ferry services from France, Ireland, and other European ports also connect to nearby UK ports. Always purchase your train ticket before boarding in the UK.

The walk ends in Robin Hood's Bay. A bus to Whitby takes around 20 minutes, from where trains connect to Newcastle, Manchester, and London. The closest airports for departure are Newcastle (NCL) and Leeds Bradford (LBA).

This walk is available from April to September, with no fixed start days. May is historically one of the driest months, with wildflowers in bloom and quieter trails. Late August into early autumn is the finest time to see the heather on the North York Moors, when swathes of purple carpet the hillside. September brings crisp autumn days and golden moorland, though conditions become more changeable as the season closes. A waterproof is essential whatever the month.

This walk is graded challenging. Most days reach up to 25 kilometres, with Day 12 extending to 37 kilometres and the final day to 31 kilometres. Track conditions vary but all sections are passable without scrambling, and boggy sections are possible depending on the season.

Good waterproof walking boots are essential. Rest days can be incorporated if needed, and the walk can be split into two halves as an alternative. Back-to-back walking days and some longer training efforts are strongly recommended in preparation.

Daily walk notes, maps, and GPX tracks are provided.

You must hold adequate travel insurance for your trip, including cover for personal liability and accidental injury and illness. For all trips involving international travel, your policy must also include emergency medical treatment, evacuation and repatriation cover. We strongly recommend your policy also covers trip cancellation and curtailment, and loss of or damage to luggage.

A cancellation fee usually applies if you cancel after your booking is confirmed. Travel insurance with cancellation cover will generally cover this fee, so it's worth arranging your policy at the time of booking.

Full insurance requirements are set out in our booking terms and conditions.

A detailed information pack and itinerary will be sent to you around six weeks before departure, covering everything you need to know for a seamless experience. In the meantime, our team is always on hand to answer any questions.

For your safety and well-being, we are unable to accept bookings for solo walkers on this self-guided trip. The remote nature of some tracks and limited mobile reception mean that walking alone presents a higher risk in case of emergencies.

For starters, we've actually walked the track and taken the time to curate what we actually offer. The Coast to Coast follows clear walking tracks throughout but there are lots of tracks going in all directions. In areas like the Lakes District National Park, walking tracks are not signposted at all, it is apparently against their “ethos”. Not to worry, our very comprehensive day-by-day walking notes that we've created, together with our marked copy of a detailed walking map, will ensure that you can walk the Coast to Coast with full confidence, and no fear of becoming lost, even when it is foggy and misty.

The maximum weight is 20kg. Please label your luggage clearly with your name and contact details.

The Coast to Coast crosses some of England's most exposed and changeable terrain, including the Lake District, Yorkshire Dales and North York Moors. Weather can shift rapidly at any time of year, so always be prepared for rain, wind and cold temperatures regardless of the season. Layering is essential, and a quality waterproof jacket and over trousers should always be in your daypack.

Key items include waterproof walking boots with good ankle support and grip, a quality waterproof jacket and over trousers, warm layers, a wide-brimmed hat, sunscreen, sunglasses and a 25 to 30 litre daypack for daily essentials. A basic first aid kit including blister treatment is strongly recommended. Walking poles are useful on the steeper and rougher sections. A full packing list will be included in your information pack sent approximately six weeks before departure.

Yes. While credit and debit cards are widely accepted in most pubs, hotels and towns along the route, smaller establishments and village shops may prefer cash. ATMs are available in larger towns but can be less frequent in more rural areas. The currency throughout the UK is the Great British Pound.

Yes. Please advise us of any dietary requirements at the time of booking so we can inform your accommodation hosts. The Coast to Coast passes through many excellent village pubs and restaurants, and most are well accustomed to catering for common dietary needs. On check-in, always reconfirm your requirements directly with your host.

Local taxis are available in most towns and villages along the route and are a practical option if you need to skip a section or shorten a day.
