Overview

Gariwerd, the Grampians National Park, breaks from the flat farmland of Victoria's Western District in a run of orange sandstone ranges you'll see from a long way off. Millions of years of weather have carved them into rock amphitheatres, slot canyons and cliff top lookouts, and over five days you'll walk the best of them with a small group of no more than ten and a guide who knows the terrain well. Starting and finishing in Melbourne, you'll base yourself in Halls Gap for the northern highlights, the canyons of the Wonderland Loop and the Pinnacle, then the sandstone country of Mount Zero and Mount Stapylton, before moving south to Dunkeld for the summit views from Mount Sturgeon and a relaxed finish at your stylish Dunkeld base. Breakfasts and dinners are at local restaurants, with lunch packs on walking days, so nothing pulls your attention from the trail and the country it cuts through.

Highlights

  • Wander through towering rock chasms and narrow slot canyons on the Wonderland Loop, finishing at the Pinnacle lookout
  • Climb Mount Zero for a 360 degree panorama over the Wimmera plains and olive groves
  • Hike the tilted sandstone slabs of Mount Stapylton, framed by hollowed out rock caves
  • Reach the 540 metre summit of Mount Sturgeon for views over Dunkeld and the Western District plains
  • Spot wallabies, echidnas and birdlife through the eucalypt forest on the Grampians Peaks Trail
  • Relax at the stylish Dunkeld accommodation in rooms with private balconies overlooking Gariwerd National Park

The trip begins with the drive from Melbourne to Halls Gap, taking around three and a half hours as the city gives way to the Grampians. On arrival, ease into the trail with an introductory ridge walk that loops out from Halls Gap and back again. Enjoy views over the town before the track leads past Clematis Falls, Chatauqua Peak and Bullaces Glen. The final stretch drops back down through the valley and returns to Halls Gap in time for a group dinner at a local restaurant. It's a gentle first taste of the sandstone country you'll spend the rest of the week exploring, and a good chance to meet your guide and fellow walkers before the bigger days ahead.

Where You'll Stay

Spend the first two nights at a comfortable three-star property in the heart of Halls Gap, an easy walk from the town's restaurants and close to several of the northern trailheads. For the final two nights you move south to a stylish four-star property in Dunkeld, with pleasant grounds, an on-site restaurant and rooms with private balconies looking out over the National Park. You settle into each base for two nights, so there's no packing up and moving on after every walk.

What You'll Eat

You'll get breakfast at your hotel each morning and packable lunches for the trail, followed by dinners at local restaurants in the evening. For the two nights in Dunkeld, the on-site restaurant puts the region's produce front and centre, with a celebrated chef cooking dishes sourced from the kitchen garden, its floor to ceiling windows looking out over the courtyard to the mountains beyond.

How You'll Get Around

A private vehicle will transfer you to and from Melbourne and provide all transfers during the tour.

More About This Trip

The trip starts and finishes in Melbourne. The guide meets the group in Melbourne for the private transfer out to Halls Gap, taking around three and a half hours. At the end of the trip a return transfer drives back Melbourne, arriving in the early afternoon.

We run this walk in autumn and spring, when the Grampians are at their best on foot. In autumn the summer heat has passed, the air turns cool and settled, and the sandstone country holds long, clear views under stable skies. Spring is the wetter, greener season: run-off from the winter rains sends the waterfalls running hard, and the heathlands flush with the wildflowers the range is known for. Both seasons keep you clear of the fierce summer heat and its fire risk, and of the cold, wet depths of winter, so you walk in comfortable conditions with the country at its most rewarding.

The walking here is all about the Grampians' sandstone, worn down over millions of years into ridgelines, amphitheatres and slot canyons. Expect gentle climbs through native scrub and stringybark forest opening onto exposed sandstone slopes, with stretches of rock carved steps, water carved stone staircases and some rock scrambling as you near the peaks. The terrain ranges from valley loops that return you straight into town to steeper pushes up exposed ridgelines to panoramic summits, so the days vary in intensity even though every walk loops back to your accommodation.

A detailed information pack and itinerary will be sent to you around six weeks before departure, covering everything you need to know for a seamless experience. In the meantime, our team is always on hand to answer any questions.

You must hold adequate travel insurance for your trip, including cover for personal liability and accidental injury and illness. For all trips involving international travel, your policy must also include emergency medical treatment, evacuation and repatriation cover. We strongly recommend your policy also covers trip cancellation and curtailment, and loss of or damage to luggage.

A cancellation fee usually applies if you cancel after your booking is confirmed. Travel insurance with cancellation cover will generally cover this fee, so it's worth arranging your policy at the time of booking.

Full insurance requirements are set out in our booking terms and conditions.

We really enjoyed the Grampians self-guided walk. Everything went very smoothly and the choice of walks were stunning and spectacular. We travelled late September to early October and there were so many beautiful flowering native plants on show. It was a highlight. The accommodation at Meringa Springs and Dunkeld were particularly impressive as were the meals from these places. Our hosts at Meringa Springs were particularly lovely. The Flame Brothers also excelled in terms of the quality of the food on offer in the evening, breakfast and lunch. Overall, it was a wonderful holiday and we enjoyed it immensely. Thanks to AusWalk for making it a success.

Walk was as expected. Well organized, great walks, great guides. great accommodation & overly generous meals ! Good for big eaters. Felt like I was forever eating ! Temptation to not over eat was very difficult (ha ha). Excellent variety & quantity of walk munchies but thought a bit more variety on lunches would have been good ? We had 4 days of rolls & 2 days of wraps. Maybe 2 days each of rolls, wraps & maybe a salad for variety ? Accommodation at the Royal Mail was extremely enjoyed along with the dinner there and it was a great way to finish off the week. Thank you :)

Frequently Asked Questions

The Grampians are located in western Victoria, around three hours from Melbourne by road. Transport from Melbourne is included in the package — check your specific itinerary for details.

You'll stay in a mix of 3 and 4-star hotels and lodges along the trail, each chosen for comfort and location. A highlight across several itineraries is two nights at the Royal Mail Hotel in Dunkeld, one of regional Victoria's most celebrated dining destinations.

Daily breakfasts and walkers' lunches are included across all itineraries. Chef-prepared dinners are included on most nights — the number varies by package, so check your specific itinerary for the full breakdown.

Depending on your chosen package, you'll walk a selection of the trail's most iconic sections. Highlights include the Grand Canyon and the Pinnacle above Halls Gap, the summit of Mount Rosea, Mount William — the highest peak in the range — and the dramatic climbs of Mount Abrupt and Mount Sturgeon in the south. Every section rewards with panoramic views over the surrounding plains and ranges.

This is a pack-free walking holiday. Your luggage is transported between accommodations each day and you carry only a light daypack on the trails.

The Grampians are alive with wildlife. Kangaroos and wallabies are a constant presence on the trail, and you're likely to encounter echidnas, reptiles, and a remarkable variety of birdlife. The park is a sanctuary for many of Australia's endangered species, drawn to the refuge of its rugged cliffs and valleys.

The trail is available year-round, with October through to May being the most popular period. Summer is warm and dry, autumn is cool and beautiful, and winter can bring rain but rarely enough to spoil a full day on the trail.

A moderate to good level of fitness is recommended. The terrain involves genuine elevation gain and rocky ground — arriving with some hill walking in your legs will make a real difference to how much you enjoy the summits. Depending on your itinerary, grade ranges from moderate to challenging.

Broken-in hiking footwear with good ankle support and grip is essential for the rocky terrain. Pack a waterproof jacket, warm layers, sun protection, and at least 1-2 litres of water per day — refill opportunities on the trail are limited. Note that mobile coverage is patchy in some areas.

Tipping is not expected, though always appreciated if you feel those looking after you have gone above and beyond.
