Overview

Despite sitting within easy reach of Melbourne, the Mornington Peninsula has kept its natural character beautifully intact. This six-day walk covers the full circuit through native forest, rugged coastline, and four distinct sections of walking, each with its own unique appeal. Coastal culture, wartime history, and world-class food and wine are woven throughout.

The historic town of Flinders and the seaside village of Sorrento both sit directly on the coast, offering easy access to renowned wineries, hot springs, and some of the finest dining on the peninsula.

Highlights

  • Two Bays Track: the widest section of the peninsula leading to its highest point at Arthur's Seat
  • The coastal hike section: cliff-top walks with dramatic views, rugged beach stretches, coastal forest and Cape Schanck Lightstation on the southernmost tip
  • The Point Nepean section: fascinating wartime relics including historic forts, and spectacular views over the ocean
  • The last section: walk the Bay along the coast
  • Option to add a rest day at Sorrento, where you can take the ferry across to historic Queenscliff for the day, visit the hot springs or wineries

Where You'll Stay

Two seaside villages provide the overnight base across five nights on this walk, with accommodation in each chosen for its position along the 100-kilometre circuit. A quality hotel in the first village opens the first two nights, before the walk moves to a comfortable hotel in a second coastal village for the remaining three nights. All rooms have en-suite facilities, and on some days the track begins and ends directly at your accommodation.

What You'll Eat

Walking Mornington Peninsula means being surrounded by some of the best food and wine in Victoria, and this walk gives you every opportunity to enjoy it. Each of the five mornings opens with a proper breakfast before heading out on the trail. Out on the track, three walker's lunches are provided on the walking days, each one varying but always packed with a high-protein salad, a roll or wrap, a muesli bar, something sweet and fresh fruit, all in your own insulated lunch bag. Dinner each evening is left open for you to discover, and renowned local restaurants, wineries and hot springs are well worth exploring at your own pace.

Please advise us of any food allergies or intolerances at the time of booking. If you have severe allergies, bringing some of your own snacks is recommended, as specialist ingredients can be harder to source along the way.

Note: Drinks and alcohol are not included with meals, with the exception of tea, coffee and juice served with breakfast.

More About This Trip

The walk starts in Dromana and finishes in Sorrento, on Victoria's Mornington Peninsula, around 80km from Melbourne. The nearest international airport is Melbourne (MEL), from where a SkyBus Peninsula Express runs directly to Frankston Station in around 2 hours, with onward train and coach connections to the peninsula. A pick-up from Frankston is included for those arriving by public transport. Those travelling by private vehicle can leave their car at the Sorrento Hotel, where the walk finishes.

A private transfer from Melbourne to the start of the walk can also be arranged on request at an additional cost. Please contact us for further details.

This walk is available throughout the year, with no fixed start days. Spring and autumn are the prime seasons, with mild temperatures and the coastal scenery at its most inviting. Summer is warm and sunny, with plenty of opportunities for a mid-walk swim at the peninsula's beaches, though January and February can be quite hot and early starts are advisable. Winter walking is possible but the coast can be very cold and wet, so it is worth checking the forecast carefully before setting out.

Please note that this walk includes beach sections, so it is worth checking tide times before setting out each day. The Bureau of Meteorology provides tide charts for the area; do not hesitate to contact us should you need any help understanding them. Pack a waterproof and sun protection whatever the season.

Covering almost 95 kilometres in total, the route takes in extended beach walking on soft sand, scenic clifftop paths, undulating tracks, and the occasional short steep climb. The terrain is relatively forgiving, though the cumulative distance over six days calls for a solid base level of fitness. Good walking boots with reliable grip are recommended.

Building up to covering around 20 kilometres comfortably in a single day, with some back-to-back walking days included, is the most useful preparation for this trip. Daily walk notes, maps, and GPX tracks are provided.

You must hold adequate travel insurance for your trip, including cover for personal liability and accidental injury and illness. For all trips involving international travel, your policy must also include emergency medical treatment, evacuation and repatriation cover. We strongly recommend your policy also covers trip cancellation and curtailment, and loss of or damage to luggage.

A cancellation fee usually applies if you cancel after your booking is confirmed. Travel insurance with cancellation cover will generally cover this fee, so it's worth arranging your policy at the time of booking.

Full insurance requirements are set out in our booking terms and conditions.

A detailed information pack and itinerary will be sent to you around six weeks before departure, covering everything you need to know for a seamless experience. In the meantime, our team is always on hand to answer any questions.

Overall we were very happy with the walk and service/organistion provided by Auswalk. We were particularly impressed with the Navigation App, it is excellent! At several times it did a great job at letting us know we were going off-track / in the wrong direction so that we could quickly course correct. We also loved that it tracked our progress and that we could see how far we had to go on each day of walking. Hotel Flinders is also amazing. Great room, exceptionally friendly staff, lovely provided lunches for our walking days and the food at their pub is exceptional.

Leanne and I have thoroughly enjoyed our two AusWalks. The format - with beautiful day walks that are book-ended with high quality accommodation, meals and comfy beds - is superb. There is a great peace-of-mind to be able to arrive knowing that all of the logistics, track navigation, meals and the like are in-hand - which frees us up to savour the sights, food and drinks and have a fantastically invigorating holiday! Thank you AusWalk, one and all.

An easily accessible walk from Melbourne that was rewarded with beautiful coastal scenery, fascinating history and abundant bush, despite never being far from civilisation. Comfortable and luxurious accommodation, seamless transport arrangements and excellent trip notes made this a delightful escape from city life.

Thank you Auswalk for the well-organised walk package, and for being very helpful when we faced travel challenges and had to make last minute transport requests. The accommodation choices were impeccable and the daily shuttle was seamless. We were also fortunate to enjoy 5 days of excellent walking weather on the beautiful Mornington Peninsula.

Excellent organisation accommodation and food. Makes bushwalking easy for the not so young.

Frequently Asked Questions

The nearest major airport is Melbourne Airport, with the Mornington Peninsula around 1.5 to 2 hours by road. All private transfers and luggage transport along the route are included in the package.

The walk is available year-round, with October through to May the most popular period. September to November is particularly lovely for wildflowers, and autumn brings cool, crisp days and steady conditions. Winter can bring more rain but the track remains walkable.

A moderate level of fitness is recommended. The tracks are well-maintained and mostly flat — elevation is not a major factor — but daily distances are reasonably long, so building walking endurance before departure is worthwhile.

Pack a waterproof jacket, warm layers, sun protection, and comfortable, broken-in walking shoes. The weather can be changeable, so being prepared for all conditions is the best approach.

Yes, and it's a condition of booking. Your policy should cover injury, cancellation, and loss of luggage.
