How We Rate This Walk
3
Auswalk Walking Grade
Moderate
Rated by our team — we walk every route before we recommend it.
Expect some hills and longer walking days. A reasonable level of fitness will help you enjoy the experience.
Nights are spent in a carefully chosen mix of properties, from a comfortable hotel in Apollo Bay to eco villas set in native bushland to a working farm retreat showcasing regional produce. All rooms have ensuites and each property has been chosen for its location and connection to the surrounding landscape. Occasional substitutions of equivalent quality may be necessary — you will always be informed in advance.
What You'll Eat
A cooked breakfast and two-course dinner are included each day, prepared by expert hosts or a local caterer, depending on the property. One stop along the way is a particular highlight, with breakfast, lunch and dinner all showcasing the region's finest local produce. A substantial packed lunch is provided each day and enjoyed at some of the most spectacular spots on the track.
Note: Drinks and alcohol are not included with meals, with the exception of tea, coffee and juice served with breakfast.
More About This Trip
The walk starts in Apollo Bay and finishes in Port Campbell, with a transfer back to Apollo Bay included on the final morning for those who have driven.
By public transport, take a regional V/Line train from Melbourne to Geelong, then a coach to Apollo Bay Visitors Information Centre — a total journey of around four hours. At the end of the walk, a transfer to Camperdown Station provides train connections back to Melbourne.
If driving, parking is available in Apollo Bay for the duration of the walk. Please note your car will need to be moved from the car park to the unmetered street in front of your accommodation before you set off.
Flying into Melbourne Tullamarine? A direct coach with Gull Airport Service connects the airport to Geelong Train Station in around one hour. Flying into Avalon? The Avalon Airport Shuttle meets every flight and transfers to Geelong Train Station in around 30 minutes — pre-booking is required for both services.
The Great Ocean Walk is available year-round, with each season offering a distinct experience. Summer brings warm to hot conditions and excellent swimming weather, though January is extremely popular during school holidays and early booking is essential. Autumn delivers long, sunny days and cooler temperatures — ideal walking conditions. Winter is cool and sometimes stormy, but the Southern Ocean scenery is at its most dramatic and the hills are blanketed in pink heath. Spring brings wildflowers and mild to warm temperatures from September through November, making it one of the most rewarding times of year to walk.
The terrain is wonderfully varied, moving between clifftop paths, wide forest tracks, shaded rainforest canopy, rough coastal trails and beach traverses, including the famous Wreck Beach. Most of the walking is relatively flat and easy-going, interspersed with some steady climbs and long downhill descents. Optional side walks are available on some days for those wanting to push further. Good footwear and a reasonable level of fitness are recommended to make the most of the experience.
You must hold adequate travel insurance for your trip, including cover for personal liability and accidental injury and illness. For all trips involving international travel, your policy must also include emergency medical treatment, evacuation and repatriation cover. We strongly recommend your policy also covers trip cancellation and curtailment, and loss of or damage to luggage.
A cancellation fee usually applies if you cancel after your booking is confirmed. Travel insurance with cancellation cover will generally cover this fee, so it's worth arranging your policy at the time of booking.
A detailed information pack and itinerary will be sent to you around six weeks before departure, covering everything you need to know for a seamless experience. In the meantime, our team is always on hand to answer any questions.
The Apollo Bay Museum occupies a heritage-listed former cable station and houses three rooms of artefacts relating to local shipwrecks, pioneer life and the coastal history of this stretch of the Shipwreck Coast. The Cape Otway Lightstation, at the heart of the walk route, is the oldest surviving lighthouse on mainland Australia (built 1848), with guided Shipwreck Discovery Tours and a museum covering the maritime history of the region.

My husband and I completed this walk in October 2025. The scenery was amazing, something different around almost every corner, it was just fantastic to walk this coastline and to see so many different landscapes! This was probably the most challenging and memorable thing we have ever done. The accommodation and meals were excellent and way above expectation, we loved everywhere we stayed!

The notes were interesting and helpful, and the pace each day was good for a couple of fit sixty-somethings. We appreciated having both hard copies of the notes and the very useful information available via the hiking app.
It was a lovely, stress-free way to walk. It was especially helpful that we didn’t have to bring, buy, or rent our own backpacking gear, considering we had come from overseas. So, yes…definitely tempting, just not sure where to yet!

I think the self guided version of the walk is really well organised and very well supported by the accommodation, food and transport people. Initially it feels a little odd to be in your room and packets of food in the fridge . We anticipated potentially sharing meal times with others but were not dissappointed when we didn't. In fact as we went along it added to the personal aspect of the walk as we didn't need to have any group encounters. That may not suit everyone but I think it worked for us. We have walked self guided in Japan and spent way more time in a group and there were group evening meals. We encountered plenty of people on the trail so I think this mode works well. The food and food logistics were fantastic. The transport team were timely, flexible and great ambassadors for the walk. We had most of the weather variables that you might expect and plenty of wildlife encounters . Always knowing that there was food and shelter waiting and someone to ferry us there when we couldn't walk straight into the evening stop. The walk is very picturesque, challenging enough without being hard and is easy to recommend.

Apprehension & fears were mostly unnecessary, due to the great group of supportive people & a mixture of experienced & amiable guides. Luck with the weather, stunning views, beautiful beaches( although a bit tough trying to keep pace), good food & accommodation made the walk a great experience.

Just finished the 8 Day Great Ocean Walk with Auswalk with 6 days of actual hiking. The trail is absolutely spectacular and Auswalk have divided up the distance each day perfectly giving you plenty of time for a nice relaxed pace and rest stops along each leg to enjoy the views and stop for lunch. Auswalk is one of those rare businesses that promise a lot and deliver even more! Everything about this trip was exceptional including the accomodation, food and taxi services with Auswalk supporting many local businesses. Everything went very smoothly so that the whole experience was wonderful. A brilliant way to walk this trail but still enjoy the comforts of a very comfortable place to stay each night. A highlight was the four nights at Great Ocean Walk Retreat, not only luxurious accomodation but gourmet vegan meals provided by Jodie and Shane at Chi Medicinal Farm next door. Very reasonable pricing for the trip as well. I will definitely be arranging more adventures with Auswalk - highly, highly recommended!

Wow what a beautiful hike. The landscape and seascape are stunning. So much variety. I was lucky enough to see Koals, 2 were very close on the track; wallabies, loads of birds and 5 snakes...including a tiger snake. The trail had lots of ups and downs as well as some beach walking. Magnificent all the way. You will need to carry lots of water. I carried 2.5 litres each day and always had a bit to spare. The food was great. I also took muesli bars each day for some quick energy. Taxi pick ups all went smoothly. The track was in need of some tidy up. Think lots of blackberry bush tendrils at times. I reverted to long pants and gaiters. The track could do with some additional signals. I missed some options on the last day. A helicopter ride at the 12 apostles is definitely worth doing at the end. Thoroughly recommend the hike and Auswalks were good to deal with. Lots of notes and an App. The price seemed good value too.

Good and well defined tracks all along. The remnants of mountain ash forest were truly awesome so were the fields of grass trees and bracken ferns under sheltered canopy. The wild coast line was just splendid which we discovered as it turned grey, misty, rainy but mostly sunny and ideal for walking. The week between 21st and 27th November - 7 days of bliss and weather condition.

Very well organised, starting from getting our coffee order as we left Melbourne so that when the bus stopped, the coffees just needed to be picked up, chocolate dipped strawberries at the end of day 1's walk, fresh pineapple and melon other days, along with snacks, hot drinks and cold drinks after our walks. Incredible. scenery very impressive, interesting stories and background information given for the area. Amazing trip from start to finish, we couldn't fault the organisation and the guides were simply amazing, we had so much fun

We thoroughly enjoyed our walk and it was organised to perfection - the hike itself, the accommodation and the food were all top notch. It was the perfect way to explore the beautiful Great Ocean Road (Shipwreck Coast) area. A Wonderful Adventure on the Great Ocean Walk with AusWalk
Our experience on the Great Ocean Walk was nothing short of amazing. The trip was exceptionally well-organized by AusWalk, making every step of the journey smooth and enjoyable. From the stunning coastal scenery to the comfortable accommodations, everything was thoughtfully arranged.
We especially appreciated the warm hospitality from the hosts we met along the way — their kindness and local knowledge added a personal touch that made the adventure even more memorable. It was a fantastic way to explore nature, unwind, and connect with great people.
Highly recommended for anyone looking for a well-supported walking holiday with a touch of adventure and comfort!

The variation of the walk was excellent, beach, forest, hills and flat (not much). The guides, Chris L and Chris D were excellent. Their combined knowledge of the local fauna and fauna was informative and great. Their greatest attribute in my opinion was their attention to risk management, safety and wellbeing of the whole group was paramount at all times. I was happy with the walking routes. They were challenging at times but doable considering I am 81 years old but young t heart. Extremely well.

Loved the different places we stayed- and having 2 days instead of moving everyday. Food was fantastic! I had to not order entree meal sometimes as very generous servings. Plenty of choice for all. Very happy for you to use. I’ve already recommended Auswalk to several others who might be interested. I was a little bit apprehensive about travelling on my own but the guides and the whole group were very friendly, inclusive and made it very special.
I commented to guide about this and he said everyone is there for the same reason so all out to enjoy and have a great time.

We took our Auswalk trip in the dead of winter (July 2025) and had a wonderful time. The weather was cold, but after walking for 20 minutes we really didn't notice it. Overall we had excellent hiking weather without having to worry about snakes and bugs. The accommodations were comfortable, the food was excellent, and the transportation timely and educational. I would use Auswalk again without hesitation.

The Great Ocean Walk has been on my list of Australia walks for a while and I am so glad I have completed it. It was great to be able to walk and then return to a nice accommodation and meal at night rather than camping out. The weather with great not too hot or rainy. I am grateful to have been able to take some lovely photos and short videos of the landscape and wildlife especially the koalas.

Our recent trip was excellent across the board, from the accommodations to the meals and the guides. Each motel had its own appeal: Lochard boasted spacious rooms, Bimbi Park offered koala spotting from the cabins, and Sandpiper Motel provided a quiet, comfortable stay. All featured comfy beds and hot showers. The flexible meal ordering system was a definite highlight, with Waves in Port Campbell being a particular standout for delicious options. We especially enjoyed creating our own fresh salads with wraps or bread for lunch at Bimbi Park. Our guides were superbly organised, helpful, and informative. Lee, in particular, made the experience even better with his wit and local expertise. We also loved being able to support local businesses, and the thoughtful touches like memorable breaks, the surprise afternoon tea at the end of each day's walk, and delicious treats throughout truly enhanced our trip. It was a highly recommended experience!

What an amazing week we had on the Great Ocean Walk. I honestly couldn't have asked for more. Our guides, Bec and Lee, were not only super professional but kept us entertained with their delightful sense of humour. And the food? I was a bit worried about my food intolerances before the trip, but I needn't have been – every meal was absolutely delicious, high quality, and carefully catered to my needs. The walk itself was just beautiful - the views of the coast are breathtaking. I particularly appreciated being able to skip a few stages to take it easy on my pre-existing Achilles tendon problems - this flexibility allowed me to enjoy the whole experience without worry. Thank you Auswalk for creating such wonderful memories. Andrea P.

We were so glad we arranged this walking holiday with AUSWALK as the attention to detail in the planning, communication, walking note booklets, booking summary and the app were excellent. All we really had to do was walk and enjoy ourselves. It was everything we'd hoped it would be and we look forward to planning more such walks.

I have just spent the best week walking the Great Ocean Walk with Auswalk. The scenery was everchanging & spectacular. The walk itself was challenging in parts but for the most pretty easy going. We fluked fantastic weather for the time of year which made for a pleasant walking experience. There was so much food I don’t think I lost any weight despite walking every day. The food & accommodation was excellent – you did not need to spend any money on the trip, apart from drinks, as everything was provided. We are already looking at where our next Auswalk trip might be. Thank you Auswalk for a fantastic week.

We would like to say what a delightful group of people you have that looked after us. Apollo Bay Taxis were on time every time. They went above and beyond especially when Marions walking boots fell apart and had to be replaced. Thank you Vanessa, Colin and Sue.
Chi Farm (WOW). Magnificent fresh healthy food, and so much of it. I think we both had put on weight by the end of the walk. Thank you Jodie and Shane.
Cafe 153, Waves and Des at Portside Motel thank you all for making us so welcome.
It was obvious to us that they all highly value their relationship with Auswalk, and this made the walk a thoroughly enjoyable experience for us.

Excellent - the 7 day ocean road guided walk was excellent. Our guides Lee & Bec were well organised, enthusiastic & most helpful, nothing was too hard. The walk is a hike & at times challenging however Lee & beck ensured we had plenty of time for rest breaks & we never felt rushed. We had a cracking time with our group of 13 … I always felt safe, felt the guides had everything under control, there was lots of very good quality food, a wide selection, etc we made some good friends and definitely had some fun along the way. Well done Auswalk five stars from me

"Sue and I had a wonderful time on Auswalk.com’s 8 Day Self Guided Great Ocean Walk. This was our first trip with Auswalk and our first trip to Australia. We live in Seattle, Washington, USA and are looking forward to returning and doing more trips with Auswalk, which we highly recommend.
Before the trip, Amy at Auswalk was very helpful and informative. We had requested dates which conflicted with a holiday weekend in Melbourne and did not permit us to follow Auswalk’s usual itinerary for this trip, but Amy went the extra mile and made our dates work very nicely. It was more work and expense for Auswalk, but Amy handled our every question and request with grace and speed. We arrived in Australia (after thirty hours of travel from Seattle) and found our final package from Auswalk waiting for us in our hotel room, just as promised.
Auswalk’s Walk Notes were the key to this self-guided trip and they were excellent – and occasionally amusing. The notes gave us very detailed walking instructions and quickly put to rest any concerns I might have had about hiking half a world away from home. They made the logistics and housekeeping of hiking sixty miles/100 Km effortless. (The notes also come in an excellent waterproof case, which I intend to keep and use in Washington’s Cascades for many years.)
The accommodations and food exceeded expectations on all counts. Auswalk selected very pleasant places to stay on the walk and the proprietors were all friendly and helpful without being intrusive. Our rooms were clean, comfortable and occasionally quite spacious. The food was tasty, fresh, healthy and abundant.
It was a wonderful trip – even in weather which was “a bit wild.”
The walk itself was scenic and in many instances a little remote. The trail takes you along parts of the coast which you would never see from a car. The trail was not at all crowded and while it would be possible to backpack it, we found it much nicer to sleep in real beds, eat real food and meet interesting and wonderful Australians like our hosts and drivers. We enthusiastically recommend the Great Ocean Walk with Auswalk."

Bella from Auswalk was amazing. From the start the communication was excellent and any questions we had were answered immediately. On the trip itself we had some challenging weather resulting in us being unable complete part of our walk. Bella went out of her way to arrange alternate walks and to amend our itinerary to still take advantage of what was available. Highly recommended Auswalk for your walking tour needs.

The Great Ocean Walk is not to be missed - the views around every corner continually changing along with the locals we come across on the track - koalas, snakes, seals and wallabies to name a few! The track was quiet in November, passing a few walkers and school groups who all had wonderful conversations of the beauty of the location. The weather was kind with only one misty-morn. Sun block was required on some days. Outsourcing our group walk to Auswalk took away the burden of car-shuffles, etc. that is normally involved for our group activities. The accommodation was excellent in all locations and the food was in abundance along with the quality! Frank’s lamb shanks (Bimbi Park) not to be missed! Amazing Australian tucker, cooked by expert chefs! Auswalk’s representative Katie went above and beyond to assist our group with all those little needs and requirements, driving safely and diligently around the twisty bendy roads of the Great Ocean Raod.
Of course, the highlight of this walk is the end destination the 12 Apostles. We commenced in Apollo Bay day 1 to Day 7 arriving at the 12 Apostles, but in achieving this milestone, the true experience along the track was the journey and people we met along the way.

I have done many guided and self- guided walks in many different parts of the world and this walk is definitely up there with the best of them. The walk itself iwas beautiful but challenging enough to provide a delicious sense of achievement at the end of each day! The accommodation and food, wonderful and plentiful and felt like a luxurious reward for our endeavours. Our guides Katie and Chris are very knowledgeable, experienced and capable and above all down to earth and delightful human beings, both with a great sense of humour. They made everyday special with little treats and surprises such as champagne at London Bridge’ after a long walk. They made my husband’s birthday feel very special at very little notice. We had fabulous weather and a great bunch of walkers which made the whole experience perfect!

A great well organised 6 night trip designed for keen walkers who like comfortable accommodation and good food at the end of the day. This trip allowed us to explore this corner of Australia while our luggage was moved along each day. We started with an overnight stay in the atmospheric Cape Otway Lighthouse but all the properties we stayed in had there own character and our hosts were welcoming.

An absolutely first class guided tour of a beautiful scenic walk from Sunday - Saturday along this amazing walk. Nature is represented on this walk in so many ways. Long empty beaches with estuaries to cross, surging waves to dab a toe in, clifftop heathlands, rainforests, forests and views from Apollo By to Port Campbell to leave you sighing...
We saw lots of koalas, Eastern grey kangaroos, swamp wallabies, red necked wallabies, seabirds of all kinds, a shy echnida, a couple of snakes keeping out of our way and so much more. The two guides were extremely experienced, professional and informative. We heard of the history of the making of the Great Ocean Road, the shipwrecks, The Lighthouse at Cape Otway stories, and many more. Flora and fauna and the long history of the rock formations along the way. All questions were answered perfectly and we all learnt a tremendous about about southern Victoria. The guides helped enormously with any feet issues, gear ware and organised the best food for our lunches in the bush! I would 100% recommend Auswalks for this walk, and any of their other walks(the walkers in th group had done several Auswalk walks and all agreed they were the best, with lots of variety of destinations.)

We had a fabulous walking holiday. The Aus walk guide book was thorough and easy to follow. It maximised our opportunities to experience beautiful features of the coastline and environment. Backup support from the office was prompt and efficient, ensuring our needs were effectively met in a timely manner. Georgie and John, our transfer drivers were also fabulous, they were flexible in accommodating our requests to personalise our start and finish times, they were a valuable source of information and considerate and caring when the weather became challenging. They went out of their way to make our experience a positive one. Our accommodation at The Great Ocean Walk Retreat was lovely, clean and comfortable. Overall, we could not have asked for better service. I highly recommend AusWalks and will look forward to booking another holiday with them again in the future.

This was my first experience of a guided walk and it was certainly a luxury experience. Being collected from central Melbourne and then being driven to the start of each day's walk, having luxurious accommodation with all meals provided and guides leading the route each day resulted in carefree hiking. As my wife and I are 75 and 80 respectively we expected that we may have to take an early bail out option on some of the harder days but with our supply of trail snacks, lunch and the encouragement of the guides we were able to complete the full distance each day.

The Great Ocean Walk was sublime in so many ways, the picturesque yet treacherous environment (you can really see how many ships and lives were lost in the past), the variety of landscapes and seascapes - heathlands to farmlands all traversed by foot. The guides, bringing their knowledge of the local history through storytelling added to the meaning of walking the 100ks. I felt transported back in time and yet my feet were firmly on the ground. I highly recommend this walk.

The walk was brilliantly organized so we didn't have to worry about a thing. The 3 guides, Katie, Georgina and Leanne were there ready to help with anything we needed. The choice of accommodation and meals was generally excellent. There was a big choice of trail snacks and morning tea, options too. Couldn't have asked for 3 nicer people to guide us.

Overall the organisation was superb and greatly contributed to my enjoyment of this walk. I'd like to thank the team for all the work involved - especially with all the additional challenges of the pandemic - it was great and we will definitely be doing another walk with your company. Testimonial: The Great Ocean Walk is a great walk with stunning scenery, made even better by the excellent organisation by Auswalk who made the trip seamless from end to end. This is definitely the way to do a walk like this - with your luggage transported to lovely accommodation - and all meals supplied and of such excellent quality. Staying at Cape Otway for 2 nights was a definite highlight. What a fabulous spot and thanks for the amazing food hamper supplied for the 2 nights there. More food than we could eat but great to have so much to choose from.

Our GOW adventure with Auswalk was wonderful from start to finish. We had excellent communication in the lead up with great problem solving (twice our booked walks were cancelled with Covid and storm damage.) The self guided walking notes never let us down. They were always reliable and accurate and the maps were detailed and clear. The accommodation was comfortable and clean. We were delighted with the quality of the food: 3 excellent meals each day, some of them home cooked (in the retreat at Glenaire) and easy for us to heat and serve. Our transfer drivers were all wonderful, full of interesting local knowledge, flexible and reliable. We were very grateful for all the special care and effort that went into making our walk a really memorable time.

From organising the original booking, making last minute changes due to border closures, supplying detailed walking notes, detailed transport arrangements, great accommodation and a fantastic support crew during the walk, aside from the food, it couldn’t have been any better. We loved every step of the way, even the uphill ones! This walk rates highly among the great Australian Walks in our experience of several of them. It’s achievable without going too far off the grid, and by anyone of average fitness (for reference we are in our late 50s and not hugely fit but do have some multi-day walking experience). The variety of scenery is fabulous, from beaches and cliff tops, to fern glades and green lanes, to eucalyptus forests and grass tree plains. There is an astonishing amount of bird life, both visible and audible. Accommodation and food was wonderful, from the simple but atmospheric Cape Otway Lighthouse to the boutique B&Bs. Highly recommend this wonderful walk to anyone seeking a breath of fresh air.

We have just completed the Great Ocean Walk which we did as an Auswalk five nights and six days. The walk itself was absolutely stunning, not only the wild coastal stretches but also the beautiful rain forest and bush tracks. The GOW trail is mostly well marked but when it was not we found that the trail notes supplied by Auswalk could not be improved. Additionally the estimated walking times were really accurate and very helpful. We had not really thought too much about the accommodation before we left home but we absolutely loved staying in the Otway Light Keeper's house for two nights. It was simply and tastefully decorated, very spacious and very comfortable. The bathroom was modern with a great hot shower and the front room had a fire which we lit and sat by in the evening. The pictures of the past lightkeepers and their families and the information about the shipwrecks kept us thinking about all that had happened in the house over the years. The food provided was also abundant and delicious. Our second accommodation was at the Chi Medicinal Farm.Shane greeted us and was a kind and helpful host. Our room was modern with a very stylish bathroom with a lovely hot shower. However, the outstanding feature here was the cuisine. The food was absolutely knockout! We could hardly wait to see what we would have for lunch or evening meal. I have never had such amazing food on the trail before and we have done heaps of walks! The evening meals were exquisite. Jodie is a gifted cook and we really appreciated it. Another aspect of the walk that we hadn't really thought about was the interaction with the drivers who were picking us up and transporting our bags. We think that your company is extremely lucky to have found such a great group. We met Georgie, John, Jenny and Lee. All were so good humoured and friendly. Georgie's knowledge of the country is deep. Her great grandparents and grandparents early pioneers on the land, so we got to know much more that we had anticipated about the region and it made it so interesting. John was warm, friendly and good company. He also went "the extra mile" to rescue a jacket that I had left behind at the lighthouse and he spent time showing us where we might like to eat out on our last night in Apollo Bay. We followed his advice and had a brilliant meal. We also met Jenny and Lee, Jenny picked us up from one trip and Lee had collected my coat from the lighthouse - both were warm and hospitable. Meeting such good people on top of walking one of the most majestic coastal trails made this such a great holiday. We are thinking of doing it again, and we would certainly recommend Auswalk to our friends. Thank you

I did the Great Ocean Walk Highlights. It was great. The scenery was beautiful. Excellent accommodations and food. The walking notes were helpful. The AusWalk team Leslie and John were amazing driving me around everywhere. Special mention to John who did most of the driving and also a great tour of Loch Ard Gorge. They were completely reliable and always on time and friendly and helpful. They even helped with transport when I added an extra day on the end of my trip to stay at Skypods. Sandpiper Motel at Apollo Bay Cute little ocean themed room, staff very friendly and helpful. Cafe 153 at Apollo Bay Nice food, opened early for me and let me choose a simple but delicious breakfast. Chi Medicinal Farm near Castle Cove Beautiful, like a farm on the outside and a posh hotel on the inside. Restaurant quality food. Prettiest bathroom I've seen. Parkview at Port Campbell Spacious and comfortable, good location. Waves Restaurant at Port Campbell Great service, flexible let me choose scones and hot chocolate for breakfast, great food.

My husband and I have been fortunate to have completed a number of 100km + treks all over the world. It is our view that the Great Ocean Walk, as assisted by Auswalk,is an absolute world class experience. We recently completed our 6th G0W,over 5days and have found that as we continue to challenge ourselves with these inspiring treks,we are completing them with greater ease than 10 years ago!(We are now in our 60’s). There are many other reasons we keep coming back to the Great Ocean Walk. Among them are: *awesome wilderness of south western coast of Victoria, including our charming indigenous wildlife, *genuinely warm country hospitality provided by B’n’B hosts, *hearty meals including deserts and afternoon treats to die for, *cosy fireplaces to snuggle next to after challenging days on track, *GOW departure point at Apollo Bay is only 3 hours drive from Melbourne. We are already anticipating our next trip in a couple of years! Lisa.

A wonderful walk along the southern coast of Victoria from Cape Otway to Port Campbell on well maintained paths, with views only available to walkers. And the views were spectacular! From hidden river inlets to majestic ocean views including on the final day a breath-taking view of the 12 Apostles. The walk at times is not easy - it can be challenging. But one foot in front of the other is all that is needed.
The accommodation was not 5 star but ranged from delightful guest houses to quirky cottages. I did enjoy the shower and glass of wine at the end of every day.
Overall a wonderful experience and even the weather was kind.

The walk itself is not too hard a few hills but the scenery more than makes up for it.
I would highly recommend Auswalk and I would especially recommend this walk.

We've walked all over the world - Nepal, Argentina, Peru, Scotland and other places - this trip was the best organised and by far the most comfy. Ok not exactly cheap but some of the places we stayed like the Aire Valley Guesthouse were just fabulous and the walking was packed with fauna and flora.
I strongly recommend them!

We have just returned from hiking the Cape Leeuwin to Cape Naturaliste trail in the W.A. This is a fabulous way to see some of Australia's most beautiful coastline and Auswalk Walking Holidays made it even more enjoyable with the wonderful accommodation and hosts, great food and wine available in the beautiful Margaret River region. We chose the self guided option and this was really great fun, the maps and instructions provided and suggestions were reassuring and accurate- especially when you are out there by yourself, it was like we had a personal guide. We just had the best holiday- the long sandy beaches, the beautiful forests, the sculptured coastal gardens, the limestone cliffs and orange boulders, the crystal clear greeny/blue water- we felt very privileged to be walking through this great place. We are now planning our next hike with Auswalk. We can't thank Auswalks enough for such an experience.

We have done active adventures with companies around the world. We found Auswalk to be an outstanding provider. We opted for a self-guided hike on the Great Ocean Walk. Their trip notes, maps, etc were excellent. One best indicators was speaking to their vendors. They booked us into excellent accommodations. Each of these providers work with other operators, but each of them highly recommended Auswalk and indicated that they were by far and away the best operator they dealt with. I reviewed our hike separately under the Great Ocean Walk.

We did the self-guided Great Ocean Walk in March and it was a wonderful highlight of our visit to Australia - one of our most memorable travel experiences ever. The walking notes were excellent, quite invaluable on days when we saw only a handful of people on the trail. (One day, we met only five people; 20% of them took a picture of us with our camera.) The beaches were spectacular. The accommodation was terrific, often too small to handled the guided walking groups, but always with delicious meals. Abby and Peter shuttled us to and from the days' start and end points reliably and offered sage advice; wonderful guys. Auswalk did everything to support our week - great troubleshooting when needed. Though we were on our own, we felt they were never far away.
Frequently Asked Questions
The Great Ocean Walk begins in the charming seaside village of Apollo Bay and finishes at the iconic Twelve Apostles — 104km of some of Australia's most spectacular coastal scenery.
Your main luggage is transported between accommodations each day while you walk, so you only need to carry a lightweight daypack on the trail. Bags are limited to 23kg. On the odd occasion, you may need to move your luggage to or from your room to reception — but that's the extent of it.
Coverage is patchy in parts of the Great Ocean Walk — don't rely on it as your main line of communication. Keep your phone charged and carry a backup power bank. Auswalk provides 24/7 support by phone and email throughout your trip, and their local driver and partner network is on the ground if you need assistance.
Daily vehicle transfers along the track with a knowledgeable Auswalk driver are a genuine highlight of the trip — they handle the logistics so you can focus on the walking. If you're driving to Apollo Bay, you can leave your car there, and Auswalk will transfer you back to collect it at the end. For those using public transport to get home, transfers to Camperdown for train services back to Melbourne can also be arranged.
Your daypack should hold a waterproof jacket, warm mid-layer, sun hat, sunscreen (SPF 50+ for the Australian sun), sunglasses, 1–2 litres of water, your packed lunch, a first aid kit, toilet paper, and your phone. Walking poles are optional but useful on steeper sections.
The Great Ocean Walk is genuinely walkable year-round thanks to its temperate coastal climate. Spring (September to November) brings wildflowers and full waterfalls. Summer (December to February) offers sunny days and little rain. Autumn (March to May) has long, clear days and cooler temperatures — ideal walking conditions. Winter (June to August) is cooler and occasionally stormy, but it's also when humpback and southern right whales migrate through the area.
Yes. Please advise us of any dietary requirements at the time of booking. Some properties along this walk have limited capacity to accommodate complex requirements at short notice, and changes made after booking may not always be possible. If your diet is particularly specific, providing a list of what you can eat — rather than just what you can't — gives the best chance of a good outcome.
