Auswalk has been guiding Kangaroo Island walking holidays for nearly 20 years, walking the island and parts of the trail that have subsequently morphed into the Kangaroo Island Wilderness Trail. Our Kangaroo Island walking holidays explore the full length of the wilderness trail. Given that the island is the third-largest in Australia, it has a lot to offer, but it can only be fully explored on foot.

 

With over a quarter of the island’s area protected within national parks, it’s a paradise for walkers and naturalists. Tall limestone cliffs dominate the coastline, and deeply incised creeks flow out to sea. As well as stunning stretches of coastal landscapes, there are vast areas of wilderness and highly visible terrestrial and marine wildlife.

DAY 1
ADELAIDE TO KANGAROO ISLAND AND WALK IN DEEP CREEK NATIONAL PARK

Start at The Terrace Hotel Adelaide at 8:30 a.m. Travel to Cape Jervis via the scenic McLaren Vale winery district, and Fleurieu Peninsula. Then, cruise by ferry to Penneshaw on Kangaroo Island.

Unfortunately, we may have to vary the walking order of the days to fit in with the ferry time, which can vary and be outside of our control. Our aim is to do a lovely walk in Onkaparinga or Deep Creek National Parks or the end of the Heysen Trail, the 1200-kilometre long-distance walking trail that starts in the Flinders Ranges, before hopping on the ferry and continuing on to our hotel at American river.

Walking: Moderate / 6 – 10 km / 3 to 4hrs

Meals: Walkers lunch and two-course a la carte dinner

DAY 2
ROCKY RIVER TO SNAKE LAGOON VIA PLATYPUS TRAIL

Today, we depart from American river, and journey across Kangaroo Island to begin our first section of the Wilderness Trail. This scenic track winds through regenerating bushland and is a great start for the adventure ahead.

Walking:  Moderate / 12.4 km / 4-5 hrs easier option available

Meals: Breakfast, walkers lunch and two-course dinner

DAY 3
SNAKE LAGOON TO CAPE DU COUEDIC

Today, it’s a short drive into Flinders Chase National Park, where we resume the wilderness trail at snake lagoon. This walk passes around a small valley before exposing us to the most magnificent exposed coastline and sea cliffs, which Kangaroo Island is justly famous for. The nearby Flinders Chase visitor centre and woodland walks also offer many easier options. We end our walking at Cape du Couedic lighthouse with natural cliff arches, seals and history plenty.

Walking: Moderate – Hard / 16.5 km / 6-6.5 hrs / easier option available

Meals: Breakfast, walkers lunch and two-course dinner

DAY 4
CAPE DU COUEDIC- REMARKABLE ROCKS - SANDERSON BAY

Starting where we left off yesterday at Cape du Couedic lighthouse, we continue east along the Wilderness Trail towards Remarkable Rocks. These granite monoliths stand starkly perched on the limestone coast, sculptured by erosion into fantastical shapes, a testament to 500 million years of nature’s erosion. After visiting these must-see wonders, we’ll continue along the thundering coastal cliffs towards our end point for today just past Sandersons bay.

Walking: Moderate-Hard / 17 km / 6.5-7 hrs / easier option available

Meals: Breakfast, walkers lunch and two-course dinner

DAY 5
SANDERSONS BAY TO HANSON BAY BEACH- KELLY HILL CAVES

On our final full day of hiking we complete the final section of the Kangaroo Island Wilderness Trail. Our walk takes us from Sanderson Bay to the breathtaking Hanson Bay Beach, often considered the most stunning bay on the island. From there, we continue to the final stretch, concluding our journey at Kelly Hill Caves.

Walking: Moderate-Hard / 18 km / 7 hrs   shorter options available

Meals: Breakfast, walkers lunch and two-course dinner

DAY 6
SEAL BAY AND RETURN TO ADELAIDE

On our final day on the island, we start with breakfast before traveling to Seal Bay, where you’ll have the chance to observe Australian sea lions in their natural habitat. The boardwalks and lookout points provide stunning coastal views. After exploring Seal Bay, we catch the ferry back to the mainland, before finally heading back to Adelaide with an expected arrival time of approximately 4:30 – 5 PM.

OVERVIEW

Comfort is always a priority. At the end of each day on these Kangaroo Island walking holidays, a hot shower, a glass of wine, and an excellent two-course meal await. A comfortable night’s sleep ensures you’ll wake refreshed and primed, ready for the next day’s walking after breakfast.

We travel to the southwest part of the island, where all the action is on the doorstep of Flinders Chase National Park and the Kangaroo Island Discovery Park. The rooms have ensuites and are comfortable but fairly basic. However, it is essential that you will not spend a lot of time in them as you will be busy walking and dining. 

You will enjoy communal two-course dinners at our accommodation, utilizing fresh local produce. 

The first night we are based in American river, we have a la carte dinner at the hotel.

Packed lunches and picnics complete the circle, ensuring your appetite is always satisfied. You can look forward to having lunch daily at incredible locations on the island. A walker’s lunch may include a high protein type salad, a roll or a wrap, a muesli bar, cake or muffin and a piece of fruit.  Importantly, you start each day with a substantial breakfast. This is a great way to prepare yourself for the upcoming walk.

Kangaroo Island has a burgeoning wine industry and is well known for its marron and unique Ligurian honey.

Alcoholic drinks are not included. Tea, coffee, and juice will be provided at breakfast and dinner. Because of the remoteness of the location, complex dietary requirements can not be catered for.

FITNESS GUIDE

It’s well worth investing some time and effort preparing for your walking holiday. The graph shows the average daily distance, elevation and terrain difficulty for your hike. The dotted line indicates the average across all our walks, which will give you a feel for how challenging your walk is compared to all – and the recommended type, and amount, of preparation needed.  Of course, you can adapt this according to your existing fitness levels and lifestyle.

The graph and the information below can be used in conjunction with the fitness guide to help you prepare for your walking adventure. Across all walks, average daily distance is 16.8km, average daily elevation is 448m, average terrain difficulty is 5/10.

DISTANCE - ~AVERAGE

Distance training should be a consideration in your overall training program, so take every opportunity you can to walk. As you progress, incorporate longer walks into your training plan.

Schedule one or two long walks each week, gradually increasing the distance until you can comfortably cover 16km in a single day. Also include walks on consecutive days to help your body adapt to the demands of walking for multiple days in a row.

Ensure you can comfortably walk the average distance per day displayed in the graph, at least one month before you undertake your hike.

ELEVATION - BELOW AVERAGE

Elevation is not a major consideration in your overall training program. However, you should still incorporate some form of resistance training to increase your endurance.

TERRAIN- DIFFICULT

ROCKY TERRAIN

Whilst preparing for walking on rocky terrain, you must focus on the development of balance, strength, and agility.

Integrate targeted strength exercises, such as lunges, squats, and step-ups, to strengthen your leg muscles, with a particular emphasis on improving stability on uneven surfaces. Balancing exercises are essential. Undertake core strength activity, coupled with exercises such as planks and Russian twists to enhance balance. As you progress, include hikes on progressively rougher terrain if you can. Additionally, the appropriate footwear with good ankle support and tread for grip are essential. Stay mindful, watch your step, and use trekking poles for added stability.

FLAT TERRAIN

Whilst training for walking on flat and hard terrain, you should focus on building endurance and ensuring you can maintain a comfortable pace.

Start with regular walks on sidewalks, roads, or paved paths to get used to the surface. Maintain a proper posture and engage your core muscles to support your back, keeping a steady gait. Ensure that you have comfortable, supportive footwear with adequate cushioning. If endurance is important, consider incorporating low-impact cross-training activities like swimming or cycling into your routine.

 

GENERAL INFO

The tracks range from easy sandy tracks to hard rocky terrain along the coastal clifftops. Most of the walks are moderate to challenging. The experienced hikers won’t be disappointed as there is ample opportunity to walk challenging distances and explore some fascinating geological sites. The Kangaroo Island Wilderness Trail, as you’d expect,  makes for excellent walking.

This trip operates with a pair of experienced guides who lead the way. They allow you to walk at a pace that suits you and can offer within reason a choice of easier or harder walking options along the way dependent on group needs Most dietary requirements can be catered for, but if you want more information, please speak to the office.

Pre and post-tour accommodation: There are many hotels in Adelaide; however, we pick up and drop off at the Terrace Hotel, 208 South Terrace, Adelaide. The tour starts at 9.00 am at the Terrace Hotel. We arrive back in Adelaide at approximately 4.30 pm on the last day

WEATHER

We only depart at the best time, which for Kangaroo Island is autumn and spring. To ensure suitable clothing, check the Bureau of Meteorology’s information about temperatures and rainfall ahead of time.

Due to its island nature it can often be windy, wet, hot and dry all in one day. Squalls can be common but often blow over quickly. Pack for differing conditions with light layers so you can adapt over the course of the day as the weather may change.

INSURANCE

We require that you have adequate travel insurance against potential losses, damage, or injuries, including cancellation costs and luggage loss.

We recommend that you purchase travel insurance that includes medical evacuation coverage for all trips.

We also charge a cancellation fee if you cancel your walking holiday after we have confirmed it to cover costs incurred by our suppliers and in the office.  See the FAQ section for more information.

INFORMATION PACK

For over 30 years we have taken pride in providing seamlessly organised walking holidays, but we know, even with that in mind, that you’ll have many more questions. You will receive a very detailed information pack and itinerary approximately six weeks out from departure outlining all the fine details and much more.

DIETARY REQUIREMENTS

This trip is staged in a remote area, therefore, it is not possible to accommodate complex dietary requirements, though we can accommodate common dietary needs. Please speak to the office if you have any queries.

    Dan was an excellent leader, driver and cook! Georgie supported him and the group very well. Slower walkers were well catered for by offering shorter or easier alternatives to the full itinerary for that part of the group. We appreciated the shortening of the Sanderson section through driving to Remarkable Rocks after spending time on the Weir Loop and Admirals Arch.

    Bill, Bob & Rhonda were fantastic- they exceeded expectationRhonda – did a fabulous job – she definitely went the extra mile. Bill & Bob- were both extremely knowledgeable guides and they openly shared their experience, knowledge and passion of KI . They were able to shuffle the schedule to fit in a couple of extra activities that some of the groups were interested in. The walking was lovely and varied. We could probably have given the Gin place a miss – but I realizes that this could be a highlight for other groups. They also definitely went the extra mile.

    Kangaroo Island was a great trip. We were lucky to be able to do the walks we did due to the fires and the weather earlier in the year. The guides and their partners made it lots of fun.

Comfort is always a priority. At the end of each day on these Kangaroo Island walking holidays, a hot shower, a glass of wine, and an excellent two-course meal await. A comfortable night’s sleep ensures you’ll wake refreshed and primed, ready for the next day’s walking after breakfast.

We travel to the southwest part of the island, where all the action is on the doorstep of Flinders Chase National Park and the Kangaroo Island Discovery Park. The rooms have ensuites and are comfortable but fairly basic. However, it is essential that you will not spend a lot of time in them as you will be busy walking and dining. 

You will enjoy communal two-course dinners at our accommodation, utilizing fresh local produce. 

The first night we are based in American river, we have a la carte dinner at the hotel.

Packed lunches and picnics complete the circle, ensuring your appetite is always satisfied. You can look forward to having lunch daily at incredible locations on the island. A walker’s lunch may include a high protein type salad, a roll or a wrap, a muesli bar, cake or muffin and a piece of fruit.  Importantly, you start each day with a substantial breakfast. This is a great way to prepare yourself for the upcoming walk.

Kangaroo Island has a burgeoning wine industry and is well known for its marron and unique Ligurian honey.

Alcoholic drinks are not included. Tea, coffee, and juice will be provided at breakfast and dinner. Because of the remoteness of the location, complex dietary requirements can not be catered for.

FITNESS GUIDE

It’s well worth investing some time and effort preparing for your walking holiday. The graph shows the average daily distance, elevation and terrain difficulty for your hike. The dotted line indicates the average across all our walks, which will give you a feel for how challenging your walk is compared to all – and the recommended type, and amount, of preparation needed.  Of course, you can adapt this according to your existing fitness levels and lifestyle.

The graph and the information below can be used in conjunction with the fitness guide to help you prepare for your walking adventure. Across all walks, average daily distance is 16.8km, average daily elevation is 448m, average terrain difficulty is 5/10.

DISTANCE - ~AVERAGE

Distance training should be a consideration in your overall training program, so take every opportunity you can to walk. As you progress, incorporate longer walks into your training plan.

Schedule one or two long walks each week, gradually increasing the distance until you can comfortably cover 16km in a single day. Also include walks on consecutive days to help your body adapt to the demands of walking for multiple days in a row.

Ensure you can comfortably walk the average distance per day displayed in the graph, at least one month before you undertake your hike.

ELEVATION - BELOW AVERAGE

Elevation is not a major consideration in your overall training program. However, you should still incorporate some form of resistance training to increase your endurance.

TERRAIN- DIFFICULT

ROCKY TERRAIN

Whilst preparing for walking on rocky terrain, you must focus on the development of balance, strength, and agility.

Integrate targeted strength exercises, such as lunges, squats, and step-ups, to strengthen your leg muscles, with a particular emphasis on improving stability on uneven surfaces. Balancing exercises are essential. Undertake core strength activity, coupled with exercises such as planks and Russian twists to enhance balance. As you progress, include hikes on progressively rougher terrain if you can. Additionally, the appropriate footwear with good ankle support and tread for grip are essential. Stay mindful, watch your step, and use trekking poles for added stability.

FLAT TERRAIN

Whilst training for walking on flat and hard terrain, you should focus on building endurance and ensuring you can maintain a comfortable pace.

Start with regular walks on sidewalks, roads, or paved paths to get used to the surface. Maintain a proper posture and engage your core muscles to support your back, keeping a steady gait. Ensure that you have comfortable, supportive footwear with adequate cushioning. If endurance is important, consider incorporating low-impact cross-training activities like swimming or cycling into your routine.

GENERAL INFO

The tracks range from easy sandy tracks to hard rocky terrain along the coastal clifftops. Most of the walks are moderate to challenging. The experienced hikers won’t be disappointed as there is ample opportunity to walk challenging distances and explore some fascinating geological sites. The Kangaroo Island Wilderness Trail, as you’d expect,  makes for excellent walking.

This trip operates with a pair of experienced guides who lead the way. They allow you to walk at a pace that suits you and can offer within reason a choice of easier or harder walking options along the way dependent on group needs Most dietary requirements can be catered for, but if you want more information, please speak to the office.

Pre and post-tour accommodation: There are many hotels in Adelaide; however, we pick up and drop off at the Terrace Hotel, 208 South Terrace, Adelaide. The tour starts at 9.00 am at the Terrace Hotel. We arrive back in Adelaide at approximately 4.30 pm on the last day

WEATHER

We only depart at the best time, which for Kangaroo Island is autumn and spring. To ensure suitable clothing, check the Bureau of Meteorology’s information about temperatures and rainfall ahead of time.

Due to its island nature it can often be windy, wet, hot and dry all in one day. Squalls can be common but often blow over quickly. Pack for differing conditions with light layers so you can adapt over the course of the day as the weather may change.

INSURANCE

We require that you have adequate travel insurance against potential losses, damage, or injuries, including cancellation costs and luggage loss.

We recommend that you purchase travel insurance that includes medical evacuation coverage for all trips.

We also charge a cancellation fee if you cancel your walking holiday after we have confirmed it to cover costs incurred by our suppliers and in the office.  See the FAQ section for more information.

INFORMATION PACK

For over 30 years we have taken pride in providing seamlessly organised walking holidays, but we know, even with that in mind, that you’ll have many more questions. You will receive a very detailed information pack and itinerary approximately six weeks out from departure outlining all the fine details and much more.

DIETARY REQUIREMENTS

This trip is staged in a remote area, therefore, it is not possible to accommodate complex dietary requirements, though we can accommodate common dietary needs. Please speak to the office if you have any queries.

    Dan was an excellent leader, driver and cook! Georgie supported him and the group very well. Slower walkers were well catered for by offering shorter or easier alternatives to the full itinerary for that part of the group. We appreciated the shortening of the Sanderson section through driving to Remarkable Rocks after spending time on the Weir Loop and Admirals Arch.

    Bill, Bob & Rhonda were fantastic- they exceeded expectationRhonda – did a fabulous job – she definitely went the extra mile. Bill & Bob- were both extremely knowledgeable guides and they openly shared their experience, knowledge and passion of KI . They were able to shuffle the schedule to fit in a couple of extra activities that some of the groups were interested in. The walking was lovely and varied. We could probably have given the Gin place a miss – but I realizes that this could be a highlight for other groups. They also definitely went the extra mile.

    Kangaroo Island was a great trip. We were lucky to be able to do the walks we did due to the fires and the weather earlier in the year. The guides and their partners made it lots of fun.
