How We Rate This Walk
2
Auswalk Walking Grade
Easy to Moderate
Rated by our team — we walk every route before we recommend it.
Mostly flat terrain with some gentle inclines. Suitable for anyone with basic fitness who enjoys walking.
Your first night is in the heart of Launceston, an easy walk from the city's parks and shops, with a restaurant, bar, room service, beauty salon and gift store all on site. From there you head to St Helens for a night on the coast before finishing with two nights at a lodge on the Freycinet Peninsula. Rooms here come with ensuite bathrooms, and some also have their own shared lounge room, a nice spot to put your feet up after a day on the track.
What You'll Eat
Lunch each day is a proper walker's feed, think a protein-packed salad, a roll or wrap, a muesli bar, some cake or muffin and a piece of fruit, topped up with Auswalk's own trail mix so you're never left hungry. Better still, you'll be eating it looking out over some of the best scenery on the trail. Dinner in St Helens is a two course affair, and the same goes for your last two nights, where the in-house chefs send out another two course meal. Tea, coffee and juice are included with breakfast, but alcohol and other drinks aren't included with meals.
More About This Trip
See the Bureau of Meteorology for information about temperatures and rainfall ahead of time to ensure proper clothing.
The walk both starts and finishes in Launceston, Tasmania. Launceston Airport (LST) is well connected with domestic flights from major Australian cities.
The walk returns to Launceston at approximately 5.00 pm on the final day, with a drop-off back at the Grand Chancellor hotel.
This is an easy walk overall, with well graded tracks and full days on mostly flat ground. The first two days on the Bay of Fires take you along easy to moderate terrain with some beach walking thrown in. Over at Freycinet the going stays easy to moderate too, though there are a few steeper pinches as you head up towards the lookouts. Shorter options are available on several days if you'd rather ease off the pace.
You must hold adequate travel insurance for your trip, including cover for personal liability and accidental injury and illness. For all trips involving international travel, your policy must also include emergency medical treatment, evacuation and repatriation cover. We strongly recommend your policy also covers trip cancellation and curtailment, and loss of or damage to luggage.
A cancellation fee usually applies if you cancel after your booking is confirmed. Travel insurance with cancellation cover will generally cover this fee, so it's worth arranging your policy at the time of booking.
For over 30 years we have taken pride in providing seamlessly organised walking holidays, but we know, even with that in mind, that you'll have many more questions. You will receive a very detailed information pack and itinerary approximately 6 weeks out from departure outlining all the fine detail and much more.
If you have any questions, feel free to ask one of our sales team. You can get in touch with us via our contact form, email us at info@auswalk.com.au, or call us on +61 3 9597 9767.

I enjoyed the Freycinet experience. The staff and accommodation at the lodge were excellent. Breakfast was a particular highlight. The inclusion of the boat ride across to Hazards Bach was brilliant.
The length of walking each day, with regular stops for morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea was great.
Our guides, Naomi and Marcus, were great.
In particular Naomi. She was constantly checking in with the entire group, showing genuine concern and care. I was impressed by the way she interacted with every member of the group and how she ensured our two oldest walkers were getting extra attention without making it too obvious. She is a bright and engaging person who clearly loves her job.
Naomi is a massive asset to Auswalk, she absolutely made our walk the best it could be.

A spectacular and enjoyable route, comfortable accommodation, great food a brilliantly guided. Rose & Dave nailed every aspect of the walk. Organisation & attention to detail & the best outcomes were outstanding. We have been lucky enough to do many multi day hikes with various companies in several countries over the last few years. Rose & Dave have been clearly the best guides we have had in that time.

We were collected from Hobart by Tarin. He was fabulous, the car was luxurious and he gave us a running commentary on historical points along the way to the first drop off point. We would all agree that everything was perfect. Attended the Bay of Fires and Freycinet 4 day tour
As a first timer on a walking tour this tour was challenging but certainly not unachievable. Without a guided tour I would never have attempted the walks we did - but with the help of our two spectacular guides, Hugh and Merel, I was able to experience some fantastic scenery, places only accessible by walking or by boat and was encouraged and supported the whole way.
During the tough moment cresting some hills (that my more experienced walking group mates pretty much flew up #respect) Merel and Hugh were encouraging, NEVER made me feel like I was lagging behind or less than the others and really made the whole experience worthwhile.
Not only that, Merel and Hugh are actually just great human beings, who are interested in getting to know people and interesting to talk to.
The accommodation was really good, the food great and the group size perfect.
I couldn’t recommend this highly enough.
