Where You'll Stay

High-quality self-contained apartments provide five nights of accommodation on this walk, all in excellent locations across the Great Alpine region. Private rooms with en-suite facilities are provided throughout, including stays at Falls Creek and Hotham Alpine Village. The suppliers on the ground bring a level of friendly, attentive service that is particular to the mountains and hard to find anywhere else.

What You'll Eat

Meals on this walk shift pleasingly with the location. Breakfast varies across the stay, with locally sourced ingredients provided for you to cook yourself during the Falls Creek nights and proper cooked breakfasts prepared by chefs at Hotham, with four included in total. Out on the trail, four walker's lunches are taken daily at some of the most spectacular spots on the Great Alpine track, each one varying but always featuring a high-protein salad, a roll or wrap, a muesli bar, something sweet and fresh fruit. Come evening at Hotham, two chef-prepared two-course dinners round off the day well. On the Falls Creek nights, dinner is yours to discover, and the village has a good selection of restaurants within easy walking distance.

Please advise us of any food allergies or intolerances at the time of booking. If you have severe allergies, bringing some of your own snacks is recommended, as specialist ingredients can be harder to source in more remote parts of this walk.

Note: Drinks and alcohol are not included with meals, with the exception of tea, coffee and juice served with breakfast.

More About This Trip

The walk starts and finishes in Bright, in the Victorian Alps, Australia. Bright is around a 5-hour drive from Melbourne. For those travelling by public transport, V/Line services run from Southern Cross Station in Melbourne to Bright, with a change to a bus at Wangaratta. Services operate on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays only and should be pre-booked. Please contact us for further details on public transport connections.

As the walk returns to Bright, the same connections apply for the journey back to Melbourne.

This walk is available from 1 December to 20 April, with no fixed start days. December and March are the finest months, with mild temperatures, fewer crowds and the alpine wildflowers at their most spectacular. January and February are warmer and more popular, with long days and excellent conditions on the higher stages. Bear in mind that this mountain environment is 10 to 15 degrees cooler than Melbourne, and weather can change quickly at altitude. Pack warm layers and waterproofs whatever the forecast says.

Trails are well-marked, with undulating terrain that mixes flat sections with gradual ascents to alpine summits and steeper descents through snow gums to forested valleys below. Rougher tracks feature on some sections. Sturdy walking boots with reliable grip and ankle support are essential.

A regular training routine of three to four times per week, with hill work and some longer walks incorporated as departure approaches, is recommended in preparation. Daily walk notes, maps, and GPX tracks are provided.

You must hold adequate travel insurance for your trip, including cover for personal liability and accidental injury and illness. For all trips involving international travel, your policy must also include emergency medical treatment, evacuation and repatriation cover. We strongly recommend your policy also covers trip cancellation and curtailment, and loss of or damage to luggage.

A cancellation fee usually applies if you cancel after your booking is confirmed. Travel insurance with cancellation cover will generally cover this fee, so it's worth arranging your policy at the time of booking.

Full insurance requirements are set out in our booking terms and conditions.

A detailed information pack and itinerary will be sent to you around six weeks before departure, covering everything you need to know for a seamless experience. In the meantime, our team is always on hand to answer any questions.

For your safety and well-being, we are unable to accept bookings for solo walkers on our self-guided Australian Alpine High Country walking trips. The remote nature of some tracks and limited mobile reception mean that walking alone presents a higher risk in case of emergencies.

Guides - Georgina & Jim were amazing and incredible. They were both very professional, friendly & knowledgeable of the area & history. No task was an issue. They encouraged people or came up with changes/ideas due to the weather (mist, fog, strong winds, fire haze and crazy weather). Jim would be a main asset to Auswalk for guided tours. For his 1st Auswalk guided adventure. 5 out of 5.

Have recently walked with Auswalk in the Victorian Alpine area, it was excellent and I can highly recommend it, but pack a fly-net in summer!

Just back from an incredible guided 7 day Great Alpine Walk over the new year 2026. It was a fantastic trip, challenging at times, but incredibly rewarding. Great accommodation and food. Our guides Georgina and Marcus were incredible, well organized and brought a wealth of experience and knowledge to our experience. Would l recommend AUSWALK walking holidays? Most definitely .

Everything about the trip exceeded my expectations - organisation, communication, accommodation, meals, the guides. I felt very well looked after the whole time and could focus on getting out there and enjoying some absolutely stunning walks in the High Country. Georgie and Marcus are professional and fun-loving and worked so hard to ensure that we all had a good time. I especially appreciated the fruit and cold drinks at the bus at the end of each walk, the 'blister clinic' they opened early each morning, and the alternatives offered if we weren't up to doing the full walk.

The guides were wonderful and very supportive of us that were not as fit as we could have been and also walkers who were not fully prepared. Worked well together despite working hard. The accommodation was great as was the food. Group tours are a wonderful way to see the world as a solo you get some me time and meet lots of like minded people.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Victorian Alps are accessible from Melbourne, with all transport from Melbourne included in the package. Your luggage is shifted along the route so you're never doubling back — more time walking, less time in a vehicle.

You'll stay in comfortable ensuite accommodation throughout, shifted along the track to match your daily walks. Each property is chosen for its location and character within this stunning alpine setting.

The walk is available from December through to April. September to November is beautiful for wildflowers, and autumn brings cool, crisp days and steady weather. Winter months can bring rain and make walking more challenging. Being high snow country, the weather can change quickly — always pack for all conditions.

This is a pack-free walking holiday. Your luggage is transported between accommodations each day and you carry only a light daypack on the trails.

A good level of fitness is recommended. The terrain is well-maintained alpine trail with significant daily distances — you should be comfortable covering longer distances on consecutive days. The elevation and mountain environment add to the physical demand, so building endurance before departure is worthwhile.

Despite being a summer walk, alpine conditions can change rapidly — a quality waterproof jacket, warm layers, and sun protection are all essential. Broken-in hiking footwear with good ankle support is a must. Note that mobile coverage can be patchy in some areas of the park.

Yes, and it's a condition of booking. Your policy should cover injury, cancellation, and loss of luggage.
